Today I heard a cover of the Clash's most excellent song
"Death or glory." (I didn't catch who the artist was, perhaps
someone here can enlighten me?) IT SUCKED. Wimpy vocals, cliche production, lame guitar solo thrown in at the end. Plus
it was the clean version so they bleeped out the word "fuck" in "He who fucks nuns will later join the church," one of the best lines ever written.

Are there any covers of songs that drive you insane?

That's funny 'cos I saw a list of the top 50 covers of all time the other day and Mrs Robinson was in there. I assume you are refering to The Lemonheads version from the Wayne's World soundtrack.

I guess floop WAS right!

Any snotty "pop punk" cover done by white boy wussies whose musical roots go no deeper than Green Day.

The only one that comes to mind right now is "Mrs. Robinson," but I've heard parts of many others. All have the potential to drive me to violence.

Sure.

At least they didn't touch 'Walk Like An Egyptian'.

Did I say 'Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame'. I'll kill them with my own hands. Even when they are quite suitable for sex.

Van Halen rock. Maybe not better than the original, but still good.

i can't imagine social d doing a crap version of death and glory.

i have live at the roxy and i think their cover of "under my thunb" is one of the worst covers i have ever heard, yet on the same album they do "ring of fire" and it is fukin' brilliant.

that six pence none the richer cover of there she goes makes me barf.

the blink 182 version of dancing with myself blows.

Kathryn, I think you heard Social Distortion doing Death or Glory.
I heard it today on the radio. Maybe its the same.

I am so grateful for never hearing it.

I know Brian already mentioned Smash Mouth, but their version of "I'm A Believer" is just plain BAD.

While on the subject of bad covers, I find it necessary to mention this excruciatingly awful concept:

I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied.

Dolly Parton and Ladysmith Black Mombazo cover Knocking On Heaven's Door. It's still better than Guns and Roses.

You're So Vain.

The original is barely listenable, and I get images in my head of Warren Beatty and Axl Rose playing roughly.
kathryn Posted - 05/25/2005 : 09:58:31
Brian, I once again, being the forum moron, misunderstood.
My issue is Mark McGrath or whatever his name is. He is just
so very annoying, as is his music.

I haven't heard it, because I still refose to listen to it, but I think Papa Roach's cover of "Gouge Away" makes a lot of people barf (or worst, kill themselves).

Not as genius as his cover of Pulp's 'Common People'. Or Pat Boone's version of 'Enter Sandman', for that matter.

Note to self: must. not. listen. to. radio.

Wot di fuk?

Have you heard the version that William Shatner did?

I experienced an odd sensation of barfing and laughing all at the same time.
Broken Face Posted - 05/25/2005 : 07:00:26
i was saying that those cover versions hurt the originals beyond repair - do you actually LIKE those cover versions?

Brian, you may be about to lose your status as my
sfc. This could be a deal-breaker, I am afraid.

It's not up to him whether or not they sing it unfortunately.

Placebo, I hate them so much, that I think it's almost a sin that Frank could someday sing a song with them, and I can't imagine why did he allowed them to sing it.
So, 'Where is my mind' by Placebo is the worst I can think of right now.

Dream on 'till you can dream no more

everything sugar ray has ever covered as rendered the original useless. ditto for smash mouth. ditto for the offspring.

How about Placebo's cover of Where is my Mind? I love Placebo and I love the Pixies, but somehow that one didn't live up to the sum of its parts. Also, the Futureheads covering Hounds of Love was pretty horrible.

I think I had to endure Atomic Kitten butchering a Blondie track a couple of summers ago. I'd blocked it from my memory but now it's oozing it's way back in.

I don't like that whisper to a scream that they keep playing on the radio.
