Posted - 04/29/2005 : 07:27:07 curious? an idea from another forum - some inytersting responses so i'm keen to know.
my first experiance of a loud gig was seeing Ministry at the Big Day Out in Auckland, New Zealand in 1992 or so. i was only 14, but i was sitting down a good 200m away and i still had my hands over my ears.
but i think the loudest gig i've ever been too was seeing McClusky play at the 2004 ATP Festival. they were fucking stupid loud.
an honourable mention must go to Mono at the Water Ratas Theatre in London in October 2003. was only 4 of us watching them, but they were amazingly loud. the decibel monitor thingy on the wall of the club was glowing red for the entire gig. but it was a very good loud - it certainly enhanced the experience - not like mcclusky.
Mogwai, along with Sonic Youth (i think) are widely thought of as the lodest bands doing the rounds.... the several times i've seen Mogwai, they've been very very loud, but it's a great loudness - their songs demand to be played at extreme volumes, whether it be on your stereo or live...i love it! by the time i saw them, they'd quitened down from their earlier years when they tried to be as loud as pissible..such as this time: When mogwai played in Auckland, NZ in 1999 the venue recorded the sound level of the gig at 132 decibels!
and now for the good side of gig loudness. seeing Sleater-Kinney play cured my hearing loss in 2002. i had burst my ear drum about 6 months earlier and since then had had almost zero hearing in the right ear. but halfway through the Sleater-Kinney gig i heard this loud pop in my ear and after that i could hear perfectly. so it's not all bad.
and you?

Posted - 04/30/2005 : 08:40:46 Oh I forgot, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead where pretty bloody loud too. They had two drummers though which I guess helps.
Coincidently, they have a track called Ode To Isis.

Posted - 04/30/2005 : 07:55:48 Good move with the Old Man Gloom, though I think you'd like Red Sparowes even more (yet another of their side projects).
ISIS were something else - I wasn't expecting to be so utterly blown away by them. Their sound just built and built - ended on one of their remixed Oceanic tracks and played a fair bit off of Panoptican (which I can't stop listening to) - can't remember what the encore was but I know it was so crushingly beautiful and heavy I was grinning like a lunatic and euphoric for days after seeing them. Probably the best show I've been to this year - bunch of guys next to me who'd seen them loads reckoned it was the best that they've ever seen them. Sound was spot on and their stage presence is apparently way way better. Jesu the support band were pretty damn loud (and specialised in those long tracks that you & Simon love - 40 min set of 3 or 4 songs, very much like the slow more melodic ISIS bits).
And don't be so sure you'll never see them again. I know they'd love to do an Aussie tour.
The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. |

Posted - 04/30/2005 : 05:58:52 man, Mogwai has been bagged. and i have to say pretty fairly too. but i feel i need to respond just a bit.
They, as a band, used to feel that volume was an integral part of the live experience. they have since changed their opinions to realise it's not that important. come on - they were young.
but i still feel that their songs are enhanced by being played at extreme volumes...now sure, many people would say that thats a sign of a weakness in their music - that it should need to be loud to enjoy, but thats just what it's all about. their music has a certain level of 1-dimensionality to it, but thats what i and other fans love about it.
and surfer rosa - how were isis the other week? i am incredibly jealous that i'll never see them again - and got my first old man gloom cd on the way too!

Loudest concert I've been to by far, no question was Frank Black and the Catholics in 2003 i think @ starr hill in charlottesville, virginia... the room is not very big, maybe 200 people and they were loud enough for 1,000 and it was so fucking loud my ears were ringing for a week after... good show though

Posted - 04/29/2005 : 14:42:53 Muse a few weeks ago. Loudness completely ruins concerts for me. Not only does it do irrepairable damage to your ears, but it makes the sound completely unclear, so that it just sounds like a bunch of distorted mess that is not enjoyable whatsoever to listen to.

hey, you were at that show darwin?
I went to 2 shows at the Velvet Jones (but one time it may have been called something else) and had tickets for another show there that was cancelled. I also saw a Frank solo (with Dave Phillips) show at Rocks in SB.
