curious? an idea from another forum - some inytersting responses so i'm keen to know.
my first experiance of a loud gig was seeing Ministry at the Big Day Out in Auckland, New Zealand in 1992 or so. i was only 14, but i was sitting down a good 200m away and i still had my hands over my ears.
but i think the loudest gig i've ever been too was seeing McClusky play at the 2004 ATP Festival. they were fucking stupid loud.
an honourable mention must go to Mono at the Water Ratas Theatre in London in October 2003. was only 4 of us watching them, but they were amazingly loud. the decibel monitor thingy on the wall of the club was glowing red for the entire gig. but it was a very good loud - it certainly enhanced the experience - not like mcclusky.
Mogwai, along with Sonic Youth (i think) are widely thought of as the lodest bands doing the rounds.... the several times i've seen Mogwai, they've been very very loud, but it's a great loudness - their songs demand to be played at extreme volumes, whether it be on your stereo or live...i love it! by the time i saw them, they'd quitened down from their earlier years when they tried to be as loud as pissible..such as this time: When mogwai played in Auckland, NZ in 1999 the venue recorded the sound level of the gig at 132 decibels!
and now for the good side of gig loudness. seeing Sleater-Kinney play cured my hearing loss in 2002. i had burst my ear drum about 6 months earlier and since then had had almost zero hearing in the right ear. but halfway through the Sleater-Kinney gig i heard this loud pop in my ear and after that i could hear perfectly. so it's not all bad.
and you?

I have a silly habit of standing too close to the speakers at the Astoria, so FB was exceedingly loud. Also, White Stripes at Ally Pally.
I'm seeing QOTSA soon, I'm guessing that'll be loud.

I always wear earplugs to gigs now, my hearing is far too precious to me. I'd say it'd be between Death From Above at the Cockpit earlier this year, Dillinger Escape Plan last year or Mastodon at the Mean Fiddler in Feb (on leaving there was some guy who's ears were bleeding).
Isis were pretty damn loud last week - no way I could have been up front without my earplugs or I'd have been crying.

bad gig.
went to an ACDC concert about 1990 (I had nothing to do...tiks and ride were free and I had been a fan in my teens) .
This was an arena show and they were so loud, I could hear the MAINS clipping.
When a 50 foot stack of 20" speakers sounds like some kid with the stereo in his mom's Volvo cranked, things are too loud.
FWIW, it was a horrible show in arena filled with horrible people and they have been a horrible band since about 1985.
wipe it on your dress and send it to me. |

I always wear earplugs. Bands who play loud are stupid. Mogwai are a bunch of pricks. There are laws in France to limit the volume in venues (I think it's 105dB, not sure though) and Mogwai for a time didn't want to play here because of that. Sonic Youth actually don't play that loud. They make a LOT of noise but not at an insane volume.

I second that. Everybody was listening with their hands over their ears in the club I saw them in. F**k Mogwai.
2nd loudest ever: Fugazi
I have a constant ringing in my ears for over ten years now because of them.
Since then, I always wear earplugs. |

Isis was the first gig I've been to where they were selling earplugs at the merch stand (or you could trade for weed).

I haven't been to a ton of shows, when I saw TV on the Radio, they killed me. The mix was awful, and the bass drum was incredibly high, and I was standing right in front of some speakers. Pretty much every time the drummer hit the bass drum, it felt like I was getting punched in the throat and stomach simelaneously. Fortunately I had some tissues, and I quickly stuffed my ears with them. But to this day, whenever I hear very low bass frequencies, my stomach starts to ache.
Some brains just work that way, that's what chemicals can do. |

Definitely Mogwai.
It was so loud that my bones were hurting.
It is very stupid, you cannot appreciate the music when it is so loud.

i have friends who left a mogwai show and sat outside the venue b/c they could hear it so much better outside, as it wasn't so fucking loud that the sounds were indistinguishable.
the loudest show i ever saw was probably the last pixies show i saw. it was my 4th show in 6 days and my ears rang for a good 2 weeks afterwards. thats what i get for standing right in front of a speaker

Vanilla Ice*. So loud my clavicle almost popped out of my chest, so loud the paint was literally falling off the ceiling.
* Mock me if you must, but I was being paid to attend a show by this joke of an artist.

I went to 2 shows at the Velvet Jones (but one time it may have been called something else) and had tickets for another show there that was cancelled. I also saw a Frank solo (with Dave Phillips) show at Rocks in SB.

Muse a few weeks ago. Loudness completely ruins concerts for me. Not only does it do irrepairable damage to your ears, but it makes the sound completely unclear, so that it just sounds like a bunch of distorted mess that is not enjoyable whatsoever to listen to.

Motorhead, it was a long time ago, maybe 1987, but all I can remember is that it was so loud.

Damn! That's my favorite metal band. Was it a good concert? Do you still listen to their stuff? I do...
Loudest concert I've been to by far, no question was Frank Black and the Catholics in 2003 i think @ starr hill in charlottesville, virginia... the room is not very big, maybe 200 people and they were loud enough for 1,000 and it was so fucking loud my ears were ringing for a week after... good show though
