Posted - 04/28/2005 : 10:05:54 ARGH! Absolutely dreadful! The Weezer record makes the last two pieces of crap they put out look better by comparison. This one is void of rocking out, key changes, unpredictable yet infectious melodies, and many other things that made Weezer great. The lyrics are contrived as hell. It's so slickly produced that you could slide all the way across it without even knowing you listened to it. There's just nothing engaging about the record. Okay, well, as far as I can tell, there's one song that I think is quite excellent, and that is "This is such a pity," which is a step forward for Weezer even though it harkens back to the 80's like no other New Wave retro band can. The song has quite a wicked sounding solo and the lyrics aren't AS bad as much of the rest of the words on the album. The melody is fantastic. At least we got one great song out of it... but dammit, we used to get 10 great songs on Weezer records. Oh well.

Posted - 05/13/2005 : 07:11:40 If I may abuse this thread for asking a Weezer-related question:
In the booklet of the blue album, there's a picture of their guitars and drumset, and there's a poster of a band (well, at least a picture of a guitarist and a singer) hanging on the wall. Does anybody know which band that is? My first guess would be Kiss ("In the garage..."), but since the faces are not painted, I have no idea. |

Posted - 05/12/2005 : 12:48:19 i love hearing horrible things about this album before i actually hear it. i finally heard it yesterday and wasn't nearly as horrified as i thought i'd be. it just kind of reminded me of rooney. music that is all right, but i would just never choose to listen to it over most of the music i own.
now i'll continue to listen to the new spoon and raveonettes albums...

Everything that Rivers Cuomo had to say made its way onto the Blue Album, which is miraculously wonderful. Everything after is just crap. Pinkerton is crap. The Green album is crap. Actually it's shit. Maladroit is rotten shit. Beverly Hills is quite possibly the worst of the bunch. WEEZER is a band that has hit a brick wall, and continues to drive deeper into the clay.

Posted - 05/12/2005 : 05:50:02 Make Believe you're Weezer - Well I finaly got to hear the new album, downloaded it from bi-torrent, and it's nothing to write home about. After Beverly Hills, which is way to overproduced (what is that girl saying anyway), I was just bored listening to the rest of the songs. Nothing stood out. I loved Blue and Pinkerton they are classics and I know it's not for me to say, but I wish they would have stopped there. Since they didn't I'll have to rate the Green album better than Make Believe and Maladroit is a solid middle album.

Posted - 05/11/2005 : 19:59:48 I agree with billgoodman. Longtime Sunshine is a beautiful song and a Rivers solo album would be a step in the right direction. I've loved weezer through the years. Make Believe sounds good so far, and Maladroit was good, but I don't see them creating another album as quality as the blue or pinkerton. And I don't mean one that SOUNDS like those albums.
I think a Rivers solo album would be amazing as long as the lyrics weren't generic, and it wasn't overproduced, but more "I recorded this in my room" sound.

Heh. Somehow I have missed seeing this thread. Normally I dont get so worked up and lose my cool. I am now embarrased because I have reduced myself to cursing and shouting hatred. I apologize. It's just so maddening when a band fizzles out so horribly so quickly and continues to flounder.

Return of the Rentals is very, very mediocre. The album is residing in my "I never play these"-pile for the last two years (along with the second Cell album, the Boo Radleys’ Kingsize, a Blake Babies album,... well, you get the idea). First of all, the vocals are very weak and tiresome. And overall, the album didn't age very well. Well, actually, it aged just as well as you might expect from a 90's send-up of 80's poppy new wave. Bad new wave, that is. It's just not even catchy songwriting, which is obviously the one thing that could have saved it.
As for Beverly Hills : it’s in the same league as Undone, and way better than El Scorcho, their two other "novelty" lead-off singles. And it's also way better than "Friends of P" for that matter. Word of advice: play it really loud !
The Green album is three times as good as Pinkerton. Don't let go is better than Tired of sex. Photograph is better than Getchoo ...and I can go on like this for the other 8 tracks. Every single track could have been released as a single. Every time I put that disc in my player, it stays in there for at least two complete spins. It’s classic, timeless, infectuous, well-crafted pure pop, and it rocks reclessly. One of the 10 best albums of the 00’s.
If anybody else is going to call the three latest album not up to par with Blue/Pinkerton, I think I’ll scream. First of all because it’s not true, second because it makes no sense. It would be like dismissing anything of FB’s output compared to Surfer Rosa / Doolittle.
Aaah, that felt good.
I disagree with everything you say no hard feelings though the vocals are weak on Return of the Rentals but the songwriting and the moogs are great really rivers doesn't sound that sprankling on maladriot either

Posted - 05/01/2005 : 11:35:29 I'm interested in hearing Make Believe BUT WOHHH "Beverly Hills" is a piece of crap.
Besides that the song is just really boring, the video is what made me hate it. They are trying to show how they are "above" hollywood and beverly hills, they dont need it to think theyre cool, the song is all "ironic" and cheeky and sarcastically saying "Beverly Hills, thats where I want to be" (Cause GET IT, he DOESNT want to be there, cause its all phony ... get it??)
But the video is shot at the playboy mansion, with like models and crap all around them. Oh yeah Rivers, I'm sure that was HELL to shoot, I'm sure it was horrible, Beverly Hills really does suck. It's like the most hypocritical bullshit...Its this big fancy expensive video at the Playboy mansion and we're suppossed to like agree with Rivers and feel sorry for him... It really made me mad. Like, instantly.

Posted - 05/01/2005 : 09:56:50 Even the album 5 demos were great (modern dukes, mad kow, which were green album demos too) They just want to satisfy a large group. Geffen was a sort of cool label in the early 90's. But only because indie (or grunge) music was hip that day. Geffen is now part of a much bigger major, and their only concern is to sell sell sell!
But I don't hate Make Believe, I think it's better than Green, because that was to most 'instant-poppunk'-album ever, the songs weren't bad but the production was horrible. This album has some diversity in the production that I like. But I think the songs aren't as great as before. The lyrics are really weak too
pfff, I got used to it already Maladriot was a weak album as a whole (american gigolo, possibilites) Tracks didn't fit together. Weezer-fans hate it, people think it's really bad, but to be honest it has some killer songs on it.
Weezer used to have great singles (Yes I do think Hash Pipe and Dope Nose are great popsongs) but no the singles for this album (Beverly Hills and We're all on drugs) are the weakest songs in their career. How is that possible?
anyway, Rivers should sign with matador and do a solo album, his solo song Longtime Sunshine is killer, it's from the great Pinkerton-era download it!
