Posted - 03/22/2005 : 16:03:58 I'm going to post a very self-congratulatory posting. Sorry, I've just gotta share. I found out today that I'm receiving an award for the best published paper in one of the most prestigous journals in my field. So, nothings gonna get me down today. It's not an Oscar or a Grammy or a Nobel Prize, but for my field (Ecology and Evolution) it doesn't get much bigger. |

Posted - 03/24/2005 : 03:18:35 everytime i see this thread title i think you're saying it again, rubbing it in... "I'm an award winning writer, I'm an award winning writer...". but of course, you're not. congrats again. |

Posted - 03/24/2005 : 01:14:55 I think you should get an award for all the nice words you invented, like "gasterosteiformes" and "phenotypic". Your paper looks very interesting, and I learned something by reading your site: Barney is the diminutive for Bernard? I would never have guessed!
I feel dumb just by reading your CV. And I'm supposed to have followed scientific studies. Congrats, man.

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 12:24:48 Sorry. No trip to sunny Alaska for you, doctor darwin. If you can't ID the damned jay scrub without the help of twig and trees, you have to give back the prize, the glory, the trip to Fairbanks!
;-)

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 12:18:24 Fairbanks Alaska. That's pretty good, huh? This is in the middle of the summer. I've been to Alaska, but never that far north.
Truth be told, I knew it was a Florida bird more based on the vegatation than the bird. |

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 12:12:05 What tropical hotspot do you get to travel to to collect your prize and bask in the glow of victory, darwin? (I'm not being nosey, I'm just so gosh-darned proud of ya!)

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 12:12:02 it's as easy as looking at the file name! is that all it takes to be an award winning writer!? |
darwin |
Posted - 03/23/2005 : 12:06:58 I'm a pro, baby. A pro!
There was a little money involved, but the cost of traveling to receive the prize is probably going to exceed the prize. |

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 11:49:40 Did you win any dough?
Damn, you are good, darwin. That was a Floridian scrub jay.
Seriously, man, congrats!

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 10:58:09 Speech:
Ever since I was a young scientist I've believed that science should be about learning about our world. About revealing the beauty of how things work. About appreciating the complexities and dynamics that make the world we live in. But, that was when I was a loser. Now I know it's about prestige and cash prizes. Thank you. Where's my check? |
darwin |
Posted - 03/23/2005 : 10:52:40 That might be a Florida Scrub Jay, which are somewhat endangered. In California we have plenty of Scrub Jays and even a separate species that lives on the Channel Islands. Here's a California bird.

Posted - 03/23/2005 : 10:49:19 I had to actually look up what a scrub jay was.
Congrats, darwin! You rock.
Now where's that speech. I wanna hear you thank us, the little people.

Anyone interested in seeing the paper can find it here. The award winner is the second paper called "Comparing Alternative Models to Empirical Data: Cognitive Models of Western Scrub-Jay Foraging Behavior". It's probably pretty boring for most people, but it's trying to determine what kind of rules Scrub Jays use when they're trying to choose a food item (a peanut) from a bunch of options. Their problem is similar to us trying to choose a used car to buy from a set of available used cars or choosing a wife or husband. How do we decide we've found one that is good enough?
