Any FB fans here listen to math rock? I'm down with early Melvins, Lynx, Don Caballero, Slint (I know they aren't strictly math rock, but they certainly influenced some bands), and, very recently, Hella. I got turned on to Hella via some mp3s on www.5rc.com (Deerhoof are another cool band on the 5RC label) and decided to buy "The Devil Isn't Red" last Tuesday. I've been listening to it nonstop. |

Don't forget about the absurdist song titles, such as "My Ten Year Old Lady Is Giving It Away", "Welcome To The Jungle Baby, You're Gonna Live", and "Married To The System or Married To Jazz?". (Actually, that last one popped in my head this morning while watching the movie "Lenny".)

Is "math rock" really that much of a stupid term? Rock, that has mathy timings. That's all it is!
I draw the line at something like "Post-punk disco spazz noisecore", although one of my favourite unsigned bands are described as such:

actually, Jen, i was clued in on your commendable taste, but its great to hear other people mention them as well.
didn't know a Melvins tribute was coming out! that's awesome, gonna look up more about it online right now
I agree that the term 'math rock' is a little restrictive and short-sighted, but then again so is every other concrete category for music that critics and reviewers feel compelled to use & propagate. like Cheeseman said, though, it is a necessary evil for the purpose of communicating info to the masses--casual music-seekers are probably well-aided by such categorization, whereas music afficionados and obsessives (like most of us on this forum) see right through such shallow, transluscent attempts to put into words that which cannot sufficiently be expressed through such means.

Very cool pic.
I've yet to see them live.
The Melvins didn't really grab me when I first heard them years ago but in the past 6 months I've been listening to them a whole lot more and I can only think that I must have had some major ear blockage or something not too have heard their genius.

Been away for a while, but I wanted to recommend a couple of things we've been listening to nonstop these days.
Oh, and the Melvins w/Lustmord disc is great, according to SpudBoy, I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Kind of lower-key. The Melvins' latest release is great, but a little too all over the place for my expectations. I love it, but I was expecting face-melting goodness throughout. This was very Mr. Bunglesque though, and had its own unique appeal.
Secondly, here is a review of the Crain "Speed" reissue. It's fucking great (the reissue, that is)

They just did a rerelease that Drag City had to pull because of Homestead records dicking around, but we found it on amazon (purchased through barnes and noble's site, via amazon, if that makes sense) - one is a two-album disc: Diablo Guapo w/Sing the Troubled Beast. I highly recommend it. The other is a live disc, including live video.

Oh and something else to bear in mind when listening to Dillinger Escape Plan is that the lead guitarist Ben Weinman and vocalist Greg Puciato are both utterly delicious.

Fractured Transmitter Records has set a May 10 release date for the upcoming tribute CD to THE MELVINS. Titled "We Reach: The Music Of The Melvins", the album will include contributions from such acts as MESHUGGAH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, MASTODON, KEELHAUL, HOUSE OF LOW CULTURE, MEATJACK, LICKGOLDENSKY, ABSENTEE, DISENGAGE, ABDULLAH and DOG FASHION DISCO. Album art is expected to be handled by Derek Hess (SEPULTURA, CONVERGE, POISON THE WELL).
It's gonna be a beaut - the Mastodon cover of The Bit drives me insane.

I still seem to become annoyed when I discover that a band I like appears as lumped in with a shitpile of otherbands under some genre label by the media. This seems the fault of Descartes and Aristotle when I think about it, and I move that we migrate all review and critical context to the form of E-PRIME, thus abolishing identity and predication. Fuck the system.

Post-rock's definitely a stoopid name, they all are, but I guess they're convenient for bracketing bands together. I've written one or two reviews, and its very difficult to do without using genres or comparisons (another device that gets peoples goats). Plus, I think people would read a review and see that a band are categorised by the reviewer as 'post-punk' or 'math-rock' and have a certain idea of whether or not the band are worth investigating.
As with most things, blame the press.

"Math rock" is a new one on me. It is the second stupidest genre label I've ever heard ("emo" is still a distant #1). I've been enjoying Nomeansno for about 20 years now. Thankfully I'd never heard the term "math rock" back in the mid-80s or I would have certainly dismissed it as quickly as PixieSteve. |
