Cellphone's Dead? I got that on (wait for it) 7" vinyl in (wait for it) Tower yesterday! like the album (which I haven't got yet) it has some stickers inside so you can do your own cover! Although I wouldn't wreck such a precious thing as a Beck vinyl release!!

Live - Beck @ Angel Orensanz | NYC

story by Daniel Arnold | photos by Dorothy Hong

You know those PBS specials where a bunch of middling whites get together to wag their flabby underarms at some bloated, sequined, back-from-the-dead supergroup? Yeah, well Beck and friends at Angel Orensanz was kinda like that. But hold on, cuz I don't mean that in a bad way. Because really, Beck was fantastic. Inspiring even. But that show, the part where everybody clapped along to "Where It's At" - at least for me - was like this little peek into the distant future where all of us back-patting bloggers are like this leftover subculture a la conscientious objectors or astronauts or those 1920s dimes who stood on the wings of aeroplanes in flight for entertainment.

Anyway, Beck was great. His friends too (they were Matt Mahaffey - guitar, Justin Meldal-Johnsen - bass, Matt Sherrod - drums, Brian Lebarton - keys, and Ryan Falkner - maraca). The whole ramshackle deal was pretty thrown together - improvised and afterthought - and lit up all blue like a dream about VH1. They took and played the bejesus out of nearly every request and sat there all casual on a 100-yr-old bimah, lined-up like Mount Olympus. It was really goddamn cool. The kind where if 14-yr-old me were to catch a glimpse of it - of 26-yr-old me - he'd just about fucking puke himself. I didn't mean that cocky. I meant it self-deprecating.

Wouldn't you say that Beck breaks all the rules though? I mean, I guess that's what people like about him. What's gotten him this far. But let's take a little inventory here. A) He's a white guy who raps. B) A guy who, though he's clearly capable of writing that thoughtful singer-songwriter shit, churns out those awkwardly topical songs about like... technology? "Cell Phone's Dead?" That hasn't been OK since Graceland (unless you're Usher). C) He's a novel-carrying scientologist. And D) He lives in Los Angeles. But y'know what? He also plays slide on old Stones covers, sings like the blissfully euphoric half of a head cold and doesn't talk too much about any of it. And have you seen the guy? Could he be anything but a celebrity? No.

Should we talk about the show or what? Like I said, it was real laidback and improvised. Covered the spectrum: "Sissy Neck," "Cold Brains," "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes," "No Expectations," "Summer Girl," some divinely harmonied Nashville stomp about "Running Wild," you name it. Smirking in and out of a cowboy hat, he called out for keyboard solos midsong and mocked his rhythm section for slopping up the beat. And that rhythm section... Ooooooowee! (I'm sure everybody's saying this, so if you're bored, this'd be a good time to check out but) GREAT NASTY GODS OF HELL that rhythm section! Bottles and cans and just clap your hands. Forks and knives on calypso conga lines with cowbells and cans of beer. At one point the whole band shifts to a fully set dining room table and bangs out this sharky feeding frenzy of a beat that would play along to that sweat-soaked scene in most movies where the junkie tweaks out ecstatic and the lights all smear.

God I'm a big talker. Sorry about all that. Bottom line is, Beck breaks all the rules and this industry shit gets repetitive but motherfuck if that guy isn't one of the most talented we got. He can really shake 'em down. And when you throw all that into a 150-year-old neo-gothic cathedral, you got yourself some lonnngterm memories boy, I tell you what.

So what do people think of The Information?

It's good, but not great, imo..i'd say his weakest album, overall...

New Beck Album Denied U.K. Chart Eligibility

October 04, 2006, 5:45 PM ET

Chris M. Walsh, N.Y.

Beck's new Interscope album, "The Information," could sell a million copies next week and still not be considered for placement on the U.K. album chart. The U.K.'s Official Chart Company (OCC) has ruled that the album contains cover art and packaging that give it an "unfair advantage" and therefore will not be eligible to chart in the region.

The unique packaging includes four random sticker sets designed by artists handpicked by Beck, allowing fans to customize their own album covers.

"It's an unconventional package, but it shouldn't be penalized for that," says Beck. "Any art on a CD is an incentive to buy and listen. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. The response from the fans has been so strong, and that is the most important thing."

The problematic packaging will not provoke an omission from any Billboard chart, according to director of charts/senior analyst Geoff Mayfield.

you should get guero carl its a really good album.unfortunatly i bought the the 1 disc version before i saw the one w/ dvd but it looks cool .

Yeah, a friend of mine who went said he thought he was better than Radiohead. Apparently, there's a funny puppet show thing!

I've been thinking of getting the CD/DVD edition of Guero. They have it in HMV.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before:

"Originally, the lyrics to 'Girl' were really upbeat, and then it didn't work for me somehow. You need the dichotomy. If you're doing something happy and light, you need the shadows. That was something that the Pixies did so well. Frank Black is a genius at these happy songs, and then you listen to the lyrics and they're based on (Spanish film director Luis) Bunuel films of cows' eyes getting cut."

i like beck. i really liked his first album a lot. then i sort of quit listening for what ever reason, money maybe. for awhile, as far as the rap stilio thing goes, I wasn't sure if he was fronting beause it seemed like it might be a stage. but then i listened to his music more and decided that he was for real and he has mad skills. but i saw him in concert last fall and it was one of the best concerts i've been to. he's really talented and really put on a great live show.

I saw Beck twice, the first time was one of best shows I´ve seen. It was first outdoor festival in Ireland in a few years owing to planning regulations, in 2000, so everyone was feeling quite celebratory. At one point Beck stopped the band playing and said Take a look at these fellows I think we´ll be watching you from now on - you could see the crowd lighting fires and dancing around them, building human pyramids and basically doind everything except watching Beck, it was tremendous. The second time was at a rave the following year and he started out quite lean and funky but slowed it down to these drudgy Pink Floydiness with lots of palm-muting and eventually took out an acoustic guitar, which considering 90% of the crowd were ripped on ecstasy wasn´t that wise. I wasn´t in such a condition but I felt bad for Beck facing a crowd growing more and more disgruntled. In between songs he got annoyed about the noise coming from the DJs in the other tents and he and his band started imitating their sounds but the crowd started getting into that so they stopped immediately. He went off for an encore and when he came back only a quarter of the crowd was still hanging around, he really stank the place out. So he´s done one of my best concerts and one of my worst.

I saw him about a month ago and I felt like it was an entertaining show (puppets, films, bear costumes) and certainly a good show. But I felt it lacked some passion. Only a few times times did I get that "Hell Yeah" feeling. It was the first time saw him.

Not only are his albums great but his live shows are terrific. I've seen him twice. Once at the Electric Factory in Philly and at the shitty Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ. Luckily I had standing/pit tickets for the Tweeter show. I was only about 10 feet away from hi and right up against the stage. Still looking for a lossless recording of either of those shows.

does that make me cool in some way?

I like Girl. It's the only track I've heard form Guero. I enjoyed strumming/singing in on guitar the other day! Also like Heaven Hammer (Missing), the Air remix of Beck's Missing, from Guerolito, which I heard on his site.

Jeez a lot of stuff he's been credited for. I've always liked Beck for a couple years now, and I'll never forget when "Girl" came out on VH1. It was the first time I saw Beck do anything in a while. So when I saw his music video for "Girl," I guess I was astounded as to how he'd make better music now. I was listening to the same song on Napsterlinks, and I just love the beat and his vocals. WHat did you guys think of the song?

Remember kiddies Roger Joseph Manning plays a very large role in Becks sound. He was the counter part to Andy Sturmer in Jellyfish. It's no surprise to me how beck gets this airy/dreamy/70's/bubble gum/loungy sound since he had Roger take care of this. He's been quite busy.

Used to like Beck alot,

my favorites-

from Mellow Gold and EPs

"Beercan" "Fuckin With My Head" "Fume"

from Odelay

"Hotwax"

from Stereopathetic

"Rowboat" "Thunder Peel" "Putting It Down" "Ozzy"

from Midnight and Seachange

"Sexx Laws" "Guess I'm Doing Fine"

Last year I found my old One Foot In The Grave CD when I was about to go out for a late-night summer walk around the neighborhood with my headphones. I was amazed by how good it still was- there are so many excellent songs on that and its great to listen to when you're alone and drunk and/or high.
