This one's for the forum mommies and daddies of very young kids.

So much children's music is plain horrible, an insult to kids and
a burden on the parents.

These albums have pleased both the big and the small at Casa
Kathryn. Please add your own!

• They Might Be Giants "NO!" -- their first of two children's CDs.
This sounds just like all their other albums. Yay! Their second
kid's CD, "Here Come the ABCs," will be issued this month.
Can't wait!

• Jerry Garcia and David Grisman "Not For Kids Only." Laidback,
bluegrassy tunes, traditional and sweet (mandolin, banjo,
guitar).

• Dan Zanes, former Del Fuegos frontman, has a bunch of good
albums, with cool guest singers -- John Doe (of X), Lou Reed,
Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann.

Then there are our homemade mixes for our kids -- wanna do
some trading? Mine are all Frank. From "Havalina" to "Dog in the
Sand," the man's written some fine lullabies, as I was telling
Brian last night. I owe a debt of thanks to FB+theCs: when I had
not a clue how to soothe a newborn to sleep, "Dog in the Sand"
worked like a charm. That tune is long enough to last thru the
fussy pre-sleep period.

This thread is dedicated to: Henry, a.k.a. Son O' Twist; Willow B.; and FuBabyBru Alexis.

For the Mix CDs, one song in particular stands out:

If you want to lure anyone to sleep, the song "Pink Frosty" bu Fugazi is highly reccomended. From End Hits.

In that song, it sounds as though, Joe Lally, Ian Mackaye, Guy Piccioto, and Brendan (forgot his last name) are recordng it while sleeping.

Don't play them "f/d", though, which is track 13 on the album. That's why I specifically said "for the mix CDs"

I don't really know about they might be giants. I haven't heard "no" or "here come the ABCs", but I've heard a lot of "FLood" and I don't remember liking it much.................maybe I'll have to hear it again.

Maybe someone should start a "Frank ripped off the Barnyard Dance!" thread.

fantastic thread! our little girl will be two months on the 7th and it's time for daddy to expand the baby lullabye collection. week 1 i compiled a lullabye fb/pixies/breeders mix that she/dad/mom can't get enough of but want to make sure she get's a nice balance. lovely suggestions. pie in the sky is great to sing and dance along to.

"stomp your feet
and clap your hands
get out of your seat
and do a little dance"

this totally outclasses the bird dance. and then on a side note we received a baby present today- the barnyard dance. 1st page- no lie.

"stomp your feet!
clap your hands!
everybody ready
for a barnyard dance!"

that made me chuckle.

I am not going to jeopardize my upcoming Canadian
citizenship by maligning anything Canadian, not
even that trashy wanna-be punk.

Jonathan Richman's a great suggestion! I should have
thought of that. Thanks.

I forgot to mention my neice loves Jonathan Richman as well, great for adults and kids, The Wheels On The Bus, I'm A Little Airplane, Ice Cream Man, Hey There Little Insect, all great tunes! I don't think she'd be into Hospital as much though.

Right you are, Calistanian, they're so much worse than the Wiggles!

Thank you for setting the record straight, HMP and VoVat.

You HAVE to admit, kathryn, that that is worse than the Wiggles!

That song is by Aqua, and I think they're from somewhere in Europe, not Canada. Unless that version was a cover, but who in their right mind would cover that song? It was a hit in the States about six or seven years ago.

My 3 year old neice loves Sugar Bee by Canned Heat, she likes to boggie on down to it.

the youngun's in my house like the pizzicato five (jappop) almost more than anything else...that and girl bands...somehow they can tell the girlbands (the cool ones, thanks) apart and dig them more than most stuff I play!

we're BIG on music in the car and that music is COOL music...not yanni. some sesame street thrown in for fun (i dig it) but mostly my regular iPod mix...

i'm not allowed to have children, but my nieces (4 and 6) are suddenly asking repeatedly to see my flaming lips videos, wayne's over the top enough to keep their attention. pixies are still "too weird," though. can't figure that one out.

i also highly recommend britten's 'the young person's guide to the orchestra.'

I agree there is a "creepy" essence to the Wiggles.

But, I don't think they're *that* bad. Most children's stuff is uppity anyway. Plus they play their own instruments.

I must say, though, my daughter was only into them from about 1.5 to 2.5 years of age. She definitly outgrew them.

Everybody now...

The Wiggles give me the creeps. They're so hyper-happy.
My kid can't stand them, so I've been spared.

On the way to a state park last summer, beautiful
isolated place, a mommy friend popped
a Wiggles CD into my car CD player, befouling my
pristine machine where only Frank and Joe Strummer
and Morrissey go. Anyway, it was the first time I
heard them and my friend explained they are Aussie.
We pull into the park and the hippie nature
girl Ranger who took our $ spoke
with what I thought was an Australian accent. We asked
if that is where she was from and she said she was.
"Oh, we were just listening to the Wiggles," I told her and
she made this exasperated face and said something
about how she couldn't get away from them halfway
around the world. It was funny.

I laughed so hard the first time I heard my 3-year-old sing:
"I've got a broken face, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh..."

She also likes certain TMBG, and FB.
I have to pick up "No" by TMBG sometime though.

I'm sure I'm going to catch some heat for this, but I find the Wiggles semi-entertaining...

Frog in the Sand Posted - 03/02/2005 : 02:25:36
My 4-year son, Frederic, loves the Pogues because of the variety of instruments they play. But his favorite piece of music, by far, is 'Peter and the Wolf', by S. Prokofiev.

Btw, children's music is not necessarily horrible, it actually all depends on the way it's arranged and played. The French traditional repertoire is full of old, boring songs which can be easily - and very pleasantly - modernized and even 'rock'n'rollized'.
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 03/01/2005 : 15:24:29
Yes very risky indeed.

By the way, I must recommend that self-titled Le Tigre album to you for your own listening pleasure. For me it's far better than This Island. I don't own Feminist Sweepstakes yet (will do very soon), but tgif off that album is amazing.

Brilliant!

To get her into Le Tigre, try the self-titled album. I bet she would LOVE Hot Topic. And probably Deceptacon too.

Cheers HPM, will do. I dread the day she starts to like boy bands and stuff, just have to fight the good fight best I can.

I've wondered if I should play stuff that I hate in the hope she'll rebel against it in later life, but it's a terrible risk to take.
