This one's for the forum mommies and daddies of very young kids.
So much children's music is plain horrible, an insult to kids and a burden on the parents.
These albums have pleased both the big and the small at Casa Kathryn. Please add your own!
• They Might Be Giants "NO!" -- their first of two children's CDs. This sounds just like all their other albums. Yay! Their second kid's CD, "Here Come the ABCs," will be issued this month. Can't wait!
• Jerry Garcia and David Grisman "Not For Kids Only." Laidback, bluegrassy tunes, traditional and sweet (mandolin, banjo, guitar).
• Dan Zanes, former Del Fuegos frontman, has a bunch of good albums, with cool guest singers -- John Doe (of X), Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann.
Then there are our homemade mixes for our kids -- wanna do some trading? Mine are all Frank. From "Havalina" to "Dog in the Sand," the man's written some fine lullabies, as I was telling Brian last night. I owe a debt of thanks to FB+theCs: when I had not a clue how to soothe a newborn to sleep, "Dog in the Sand" worked like a charm. That tune is long enough to last thru the fussy pre-sleep period.
This thread is dedicated to: Henry, a.k.a. Son O' Twist; Willow B.; and FuBabyBru Alexis.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

My daughter loves alot of the Beatles. Especially Magical Mystery Tour and really especially Abbey Road, why just the other day she drew me a picture of an octopus's garden under the sea :)

me being boring me, i have a few compilations of both frank and the pixies. oh yeah, the breeders too SMYT in general worked well, especially Horrible Day for some reason, she has taste
can't wait to check out TMBG's discs, they sound just perfect. particle Man sounds to me like something that would have been on 'Barney', but not the killing part, of course.
we used to play songs while she was in utero, i wonder how much this affected her? |

Man a little kid yelling "doll steak" at the top of their lungs one be one cool customer. Especially the second time through in the song, when he stutters "nnnn test meat", because he's just going so hard. Okay, I love In Utero.
When I was a lad, all I listened to was the Beatles (mostly the blue best of, and especially Obla Di) and Paul Simon's "Graceland". Both great for kids! |

Graceland is still in my top 10 all time albums, I love it. Everything about it is great. Actually, Paul Simon in general is great. Can you beleive Graceland won a grammy when it came out? I mean, there was a time when the grammy's rewarded really good albums?
PS I have no real top 10. My top 10 probably has like 50 records in it. |

My sons are being educated on Frank Black's music, and what do I get, the older one is beggining to hate it, and my sweet daughter loves it! Maybe I'm not doing the right thing...

Here's the songs my nearly three year old daughter loves to dance/jump around to.
Her favourite is probably Scissor Sisters - Laura, followed closely by:
Horrible Day and Goodbye Lorraine, Ash - Orpheus,
Sylvester - Do Ya Wanna Funk?, Dead Kennedys - Chemical Warfare
Dresden Dolls - Coin-Operated Boy.
I've been trying to introduce Le Tigre - TKO to her, but she's not bitten yet.
Oh, and my 6 month old son falls asleep to 50 Foot Wave - Clara Bow. Not sure if this is good.

plus you're just giving your son(s) options, it's so cool he can make up his own mind what he does or doesn't like i'm sure that's a good sign
but on a personal level:
"Son? What do you mean my music sucks? It's Frank Black" "Frank Cack more like, mum"
kids! gotta love 'em. |

Here's my list (it's maybe more girl friendly since my daugther is 6 and my son is only 1):
1) Ella Jenkins - my daughter goes to sleep to Ella Jenkins everynight (bedtime routines = good). Her discs come from the Smithsonian Folk series. It's very sweet stuff. We also have some great Woody Guthrie discs from that series.
2) Shake Sugaree: Taj Mahal Sings And Plays For Children
3) TMBG's No! - I think I like it more than she does, but it keeps us both happy.
4) Showtunes - my duaghter has hit a stage where she really loves musicals and you know what they are pretty damn catchy. So, we listen to and watch Annie, Mary Poppins, and the Sound of Music.
5) for dancing around the living room on Saturday mornings - David Byrne, Devo, TMBG |

Brilliant!
To get her into Le Tigre, try the self-titled album. I bet she would LOVE Hot Topic. And probably Deceptacon too.

Yeah, she never stops moving, just gets faster when music is on. When she wants one of those songs on, she says, "daddy, can I have a BIG song on". Couldn't have put it better myself.

It's that difficult age that he's passing through... He hates almost all my music, although his friends think that my music is cool, they even ask me to burn my CDs.
Sooner or later he will love Frank again!

Cheers HPM, will do. I dread the day she starts to like boy bands and stuff, just have to fight the good fight best I can.
I've wondered if I should play stuff that I hate in the hope she'll rebel against it in later life, but it's a terrible risk to take.

Yes very risky indeed.
By the way, I must recommend that self-titled Le Tigre album to you for your own listening pleasure. For me it's far better than This Island. I don't own Feminist Sweepstakes yet (will do very soon), but tgif off that album is amazing.

My 4-year son, Frederic, loves the Pogues because of the variety of instruments they play. But his favorite piece of music, by far, is 'Peter and the Wolf', by S. Prokofiev.
Btw, children's music is not necessarily horrible, it actually all depends on the way it's arranged and played. The French traditional repertoire is full of old, boring songs which can be easily - and very pleasantly - modernized and even 'rock'n'rollized'. |

I laughed so hard the first time I heard my 3-year-old sing: "I've got a broken face, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh..."
She also likes certain TMBG, and FB. I have to pick up "No" by TMBG sometime though.
I'm sure I'm going to catch some heat for this, but I find the Wiggles semi-entertaining...

The Wiggles give me the creeps. They're so hyper-happy. My kid can't stand them, so I've been spared.
On the way to a state park last summer, beautiful isolated place, a mommy friend popped a Wiggles CD into my car CD player, befouling my pristine machine where only Frank and Joe Strummer and Morrissey go. Anyway, it was the first time I heard them and my friend explained they are Aussie. We pull into the park and the hippie nature girl Ranger who took our $ spoke with what I thought was an Australian accent. We asked if that is where she was from and she said she was. "Oh, we were just listening to the Wiggles," I told her and she made this exasperated face and said something about how she couldn't get away from them halfway around the world. It was funny.

I agree there is a "creepy" essence to the Wiggles.
But, I don't think they're *that* bad. Most children's stuff is uppity anyway. Plus they play their own instruments.
I must say, though, my daughter was only into them from about 1.5 to 2.5 years of age. She definitly outgrew them.
Everybody now... (The Calistanian singing) "Get ready, to wiggle,..."

i also highly recommend britten's 'the young person's guide to the orchestra.'
