EDIT - While this was originally a lovely love-in thread, it's turned into more of a discussion about the future of the forum. See bottom of Page 1/Page 2 for beginning. Also, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I think that it's a great place for it to go. :) Thanks for the positive comments on the forum, too.
I know I'm just stating the obvious here, but anyway. I just want to say that this forum is one amazing and unique phenomenon. Considering the internet is almost as large as the world itself, it's amazing how this place is the one spot that everybody, I mean really everybody who is in some way connected to Frank Black comes to. It's the ultimate place for any Frank Black fan, casual or "uber" (Was FB the first who used this word "uberfan"? It gets used so often it's almost like a synonym for "Frank Black fan"), reporters who write FB related articles quote it all the time, we have producers and publishers reading it, and not to mention The Man himself (this aspect I particularly like because we are after all having discussions about a certain person and I feel more comfortable knowing that this person might be listening in to what we're saying – makes it a more honest, straight-forward situation IMO) and I find it amazing how much influence we fans have on the way events unfold. There is something special about this place, but I suppose you all know this already. |

Interesting reading this topic after the recent events...

I was thinking after reading this forum is boring thread that it's a little like a marriage, that for some it works ok and for some it gets stale as time passes and they feel like they have to divorce themselves from it. Plus there's not as much sex as there used to be.

But like all good marriages, I think the forum needs a bit of HARD WORK to stop this staleness. The song db and the graphic refresh will pep it all up (like adding a kinky twist, bondage style)
This is something I'm thinking on today, I have a cold I can't be arsed to study, today I devote to forum analysis. And sleeping and feeling sorry for myself of course.

I voted for this site as best website for the last two years at the NME awards. Sadly it didn't win again. I should start a campaign on here next year. See if we can get it to win. I bet they would fix it so that their's does anyway.
EDIT: I just checked, and as of this moment, almost half of the 6700 or so members have posted here at some point. I mean almost half exactly. It's about 4 or 5 out. Funny co-ink-i-dink I thought I'd share. |

Cool... I will do that! Yeah, I guess my ideas for markting were more along the ideas of a grass roots marketing. For example going to chatrooms we belong to letting people know about the site. (I am pretty sure you guys already did this)
Also... if you end up needing help on Trivia SkateAlex and can work on that if you haven't found anyone yet. |

Don't worry Denis, so do I. :) If there are changes to that (and I do want to experiment) it will be very subtle or it will stay as is.
Kathleen, wander over to the HELP WANTED: Graphics thread in the web site section. I'm not concerned or whatever with marketing the albums (we are, after all, just a fan site), but I think that we do need to show the site off as being a little more dynamic than it is.

My first vote would be for an offical frank cam... tracking every waking moment of the musical genius. When he's pre disposed LBF, Charles Thompson or Frank Black Conspiracy can fill in.
OK hope you figured out that was a complete joke.
I agree with Kiki that we want less graphics than PM. Also agree with APL to keep some of the branding consistant with Honeycomb-- 360 degree maketing is the optimal way to go.
Seriously, I would love to help out. I can help out were needed. I would love to help out with the trivia aspect, but I would need a little guidance regarding what you are looking for ect.
Right now it looks like I can commit to about 4 hrs a week but that might (hopefully) increase to up to 10 hrs a week. Let me know anyway I can help! |

Dayna, you'll notice that I've heard back from Fu and he's probably not going to do it, so I'm trying to find someone else to code your db. I'm not sure I'd have time either, not to mention I don't know ASP nor the MS blend of SQL so I'd probably not be as fast as others could be if I could find the time. But we'll find somebody, even if it's gotta' be me.

I just heard, the art isn't done yet so I've got nothing I can give you along that vein, but I still think a general and very simple iconography/banner/front page change with a general honeycomb theme could be done. I'm thinking very none-distracting colours (I like the greys/whites/blacks here and would want to keep a similar feel except maybe in yellows/whites/browns). This is obviously up to you guys. I can respect not wanting to undertake it. If anyone is interested in leading the art project, please let me know.

Wasn't Frank Black Conspiracy sayin he wanted to do some design work? I'd be happy to be his assistant (or anyone else's). Prelim art would be great. Honestly, it wouldn't take more than 2 or 3 days tops to get some FBF type banner and icon deals goin, as long as the Man doesn't mind us using his album images. It's just the design approval process that seems to take up so much time, time I don't really have.
I also agree that the front page and news areas are in pretty dire need of reworking. |

Jen, if you want to email me, we can get something set up and I promise that whatever _I_ can react on personally, I will quite quickly. It just takes time to deploy, so I wonder if FBF would be worth the effort since Honeycomb's around the corner. I can see how it'd be easier when you have some artwork, perhaps I'll see if I can dig some preliminary artwork up? Once you & I have a clear picture, you can gather an art team and go.
Word of warning: I'll have to go through Dave to see if I can get some prelim art. :)
I'd also love to see these bees (I assume they're the new kitties?).

I have to admit, the slow/no response is partly why I've lost motivation.
I have some bees I started working on, but have no idea what's going on w/Honeycomb or what it might look like. I'd prefer to try to match the feel of the art they come up with, etc. And maybe have a shot of some of the musicians involved in that effort incorporated into a new banner. Just throwing out some ideas here.
Also, wouldn't it be good to have an interim design, so it's more relevant to current offerings? Maybe something related to the FBF art? I think that could look very nice. Heck, it might be another 6 months before we get HC, and not everyone that visits will necessarily know why the hell we have all these little bees everywhere. I mean, they might get the idea we're <gasp> crazy or something! ;)
I'd be happy to help someone out with the graphics, if anyone needs an extra hand or some ideas to add to the mix. |

OK, sounds good. Why don't we name a few people as official assistants (complete with nifty titlature) although of course anyone is welcome to send anything to you. Maybe people could take an album/albums they know a lot about and try to gather a bunch of information on that so we're not duplicating effort? Anyone interested in gathering trivia?

Dayna, I posted above about your article database. I'm not in contact with the guy doing our db work, so I'm waiting on Dave's reply (Dave wasn't around yesterday). I know you've been waiting a long time, would it make you feel better or worse if I told you there are things I've tried to get done through Dave that still haven't been done a year later? :)

Tobafett, have you looked in the Tabs section. We have all the Pixies lyrics in there. Well, lots of em.
I agree that the main site needs a total overhaul as far as layout goes, but sadly that's probably not going to happen (I've been begging Dave for years... well, one year). That would be entirely Dave's job and he's pretty damned busy training/etc. I'll ask again though.

No, I'm 100% with you Darwin, I can't stand avatars either and am usually telling people to reduce the size of their sigs as well. Just makes it so much nicer and more readable. Personally, I'm not even a fan of having an image (aside from a small icon or something) in there, but a person has to make concessions.

I'd be happy to help, too...I'd love to help with the song database--finding trivia, etc. I can also help with images, etc...
just a few suggestions:
1. already noted but important--new Top Icon-new FB image.
2. Make the frontpage of fb.net dazzling--maybe a little flash animation of the kitty? I'm not a big fan of flash b/c folks use dialup but it looks cool (or it can, rather if done correctly)
3. the layout of the fb.net index is a little hectic...I think it could look cooler and be easier to use...links to the song database, etc...
4. and I know that there are tons of pixies sites but none as good (comparatively) or as thorough as fb.net. would anyone be willing (I would help) to create a small pixies section with lyrics, etc??? I know there's plenty of discussion on the forum of what Charles and kim are saying, screaming, etc...I've looked all over for pixies lyrics (the foreign ones especially) and always get shunted off to some damned top 40 lyrics page with lots of pop-ups and garbage. maybe that's where we could store pixies pics, background, etc...not "as a pixies site" but just as a historical record of FB, y'know?

popped back to say that although on forum-posting-break would be willing to assist anyone with whatever they are doing as I know they're big jobs these people are busy with there, and as someone who has used and abused the site for a while now would love to be able to give something back.
Because of the nature of my uni work at the moment (endless essays and lit reviews to write) I'm raping my home and uni internet for all it's worth and it'd be cool to have something to focus on sometimes other than epigenetic cancer blah blah blah...
So if any one needs a gatherer typer whatever assistant girl, if Sarah or anyone needs a hand I've got my contact details on show so just let me know...
As for changes to the site, I just think it's updating stuff really isn't it? Please heavens no e-mail-a-week style newsletters, or news thats not news... although at the moment it seems we're all news a-go-go! Actually I meant to ask, is there anywhere where Franks posts are on the site other than the forum, for the casual browser?
anyway, books to read, papers to yawn.. I mean gloss, no damnit I mean learn, LEARN!

That would be rather difficult in the size of icon we're talking about. I did petition for the Cult of Frank head as the icon, but was out voted. I like the kitty though. We may change it when the forum becomes Honeycombicized.
