Now that I have sorted my original problem, I may just do this. Anyone else here use it?

99.9 % of the hits using spyware programs are just
cookies.
You may see data miner listed as the file, but its
just a cookie. tracking advertisements.
I do toss my cookies before going online with my
bank.
A free program called Swatit will clear leaches
like bots and worms.

Oh, I saw it. I am not sure if you were talking to me, so if you weren't ignore this. But I was wondering if there was anything the govt could do about spyware.

Kinda of what they did for all those telemarketers when they made the do not call list.

Thanks though this is motivating me to actually download it now!!

I wish there was something the goverment could do. But I guess it would be pretty hard to regulate?
VoVat Posted - 01/22/2005 : 18:39:10
I don't know whether it's legal, but there doesn't seem to be much legal recourse taken against companies that use it.

I think pretty much everyone gets spyware unless you have some sort of thing to block it. I wish it were illegal, Vovat!!!!

Why is spyware even legal?

Thanks Daisy. For now I am just leaving it 'cos nothing seems to work. Which kinda sucks.

DO NOT USE ADAWARE!!!! A it person at work told me about it and loaded it on my work cd. When I downloaded some spyware on accident I went to adaware to remove it. What they don't tell you until you download it-- is that they will install spyware on your computer if you don't pay!!! I have tried deleting it several times from my system to no avail. Adaware sucks!

Just my two cents amigo...

In internet explorer, you could try clicking View > Toolbars and see if the search bar under your address bar has a particular name. Then google the search bar name for a solution. Or right click on the search bar and see if it points to any particular website, and then google that website name (with a term like "spyware" or "remove" etc..)

I had a customer the other day that had this situation. Hijack This, Adaware, Spybot, McAfee, didn't remove it, but there was a single remover tool for this particular search bar.

Also in XP, temporarily disabling System Restore whilst you run virus scans or spyware scans can help to remove irksome files if they are locked for use. Also booting into safe mode can help that too.

Can you not get it for free on the net?

I recommend the program Bulletproof, if you can get a pirated copy..
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 01/20/2005 : 13:33:43
Thanks, I'll give it a miss then. As it stands, I am not being caused to much of a problem. I am not getting too many pop-ups really, it's just that my homepage keeps changing to 'About:blank' and a search toolbar appears below my address bar.

Probably not. The attitude of Hijack This is, "Here's a big list. The source of your problem is somewhere on the list. You decide which one it is."

I've used Hijack This before. It's very good but you need to be careful what you remove.

Also, with a lot of these spyware apps you've got to do your regedits in safe mode or they'll replace what you remove before you're even done.
Johnny Yen Posted - 01/20/2005 : 11:39:26
You're going to have to edit your registry. Use Hijack This.

That's right. All the anti-spyware programs I have tried (about 4 now) haven't gotten rid of everything. Some of them are on System32 and it said they are still in use.

Woudl the system restore option work? If I set it back a week or so, would that do it?

MS bought Giant Software's spyware program a few months ago and have repackaged it as MS AntiSpyware (as mentioned by Thomas above). I've used it on some computers here at work and it seems to work fairly well.

Once you get it removed, what you really need to do is stop using Internet Explorer. Move to Mozilla, Opera, Firefox...anything but IE.
El Barto Posted - 01/20/2005 : 08:26:36
Oh, and one of the best free ways to get rid of spyware/adware/hijacking.

Fuck IE.

Download Firefox.

Download Ad-Aware for free here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and get Hijack This! here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html (scroll down to the second Official Downloads section)
Install, Update, and scan w/ AdAware. It should be able to fix everything. If you want to be sure, use Hijack This afterwards to edit your registry (you'll need to do some research to learn what to do.)
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 01/20/2005 : 06:10:57
By the way, for getting rid of my current spyware (which seems to have just appeared today), would using the 'System Restore' option on my PC work in getting rid of them?

Can't do it 'cos my mate installed windows XP for me. Grrr.

There must be a good free one out there. Having my homepage constantly changing, and pop-ups galore is getting rather annoying, and I am reluctant to enter confidential information on the net now.

People like to call Microsoft evil. That's all. Nothing to worry about.
