Oh, I saw it.  I am not sure if you were talking to me, so if you weren't ignore this. But I was wondering if there was anything the govt could do about spyware.
Kinda of what they did for all those telemarketers when they made the do not call list.

I don't know whether it's legal, but there doesn't seem to be much legal recourse taken against companies that use it.

DO NOT USE ADAWARE!!!! A it person at work told me about it and loaded it on my work cd. When I downloaded some spyware on accident I went to adaware to remove it. What they don't tell you until you download it-- is that they will install spyware on your computer if you don't pay!!! I have tried deleting it several times from my system to no avail. Adaware sucks! |

Just my two cents amigo...
In internet explorer, you could try clicking View > Toolbars and see if the search bar under your address bar has a particular name. Then google the search bar name for a solution. Or right click on the search bar and see if it points to any particular website, and then google that website name (with a term like "spyware" or "remove" etc..)
I had a customer the other day that had this situation. Hijack This, Adaware, Spybot, McAfee, didn't remove it, but there was a single remover tool for this particular search bar.
Also in XP, temporarily disabling System Restore whilst you run virus scans or spyware scans can help to remove irksome files if they are locked for use. Also booting into safe mode can help that too. |

Thanks, I'll give it a miss then. As it stands, I am not being caused to much of a problem. I am not getting too many pop-ups really, it's just that my homepage keeps changing to 'About:blank' and a search toolbar appears below my address bar.

I've used Hijack This before. It's very good but you need to be careful what you remove.
Also, with a lot of these spyware apps you've got to do your regedits in safe mode or they'll replace what you remove before you're even done. |

That's right. All the anti-spyware programs I have tried (about 4 now) haven't gotten rid of everything. Some of them are on System32 and it said they are still in use.
Woudl the system restore option work? If I set it back a week or so, would that do it?

MS bought Giant Software's spyware program a few months ago and have repackaged it as MS AntiSpyware (as mentioned by Thomas above). I've used it on some computers here at work and it seems to work fairly well.

Once you get it removed, what you really need to do is stop using Internet Explorer. Move to Mozilla, Opera, Firefox...anything but IE. |

Download Ad-Aware for free here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and get Hijack This! here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html (scroll down to the second Official Downloads section)
Install, Update, and scan w/ AdAware. It should be able to fix everything. If you want to be sure, use Hijack This afterwards to edit your registry (you'll need to do some research to learn what to do.) |
