my vote:

KINSEY

sure, a good film. interesting bit of history. but deserving of the endless gushing praise? i think no.

there are still some films i need to see before i come up with my top 10, but i can already say that SIDEWAYS will be #1.

I think Ocean's 12 can qualify as overrated b/c it was so hyped to be GREAT. I really liked the first one, I thought it was a good caper. And I love Lost in Translation but I agree it was overrated b/c everyone went on and on about it.

I nominate The Village as being overrated, even though I didn't see it b/c BLAH. But it had a lot of press and people talking and then seemed to do didly.

i think LOST IN TRANSLATION fits in to overrated as well. it was a good film . but best picture of the year nomination?

a testament to how weak 2003 films were

I thought Lost in Translation was great too.

Oh dear. I was looking forward to it as well. I will still go though. Always best to judge for yourself. Lot of people seem to dislike Big Fish, but I liked that, so you never know.

Rita, I liked Lost In Translation too. Very good.

I thought the 1st one was great. Which is why so many people went to see the sequel and got ripped off.
OK, I'm exagerating a bit, there are a couple of good jokes. The problem is that there's no script. All you see is a bunch of actors fooling around and laughing at their own private jokes, and you feel like you shouldn't be there watching them. Like if you sneaked into one of their parties and had no idea what they're talking about. Actually there's a scene where one of the characters tells the punchline of a joke and for about 30 seconds you see Pitt and Clooney laughing, and you're begging for them to just stop laughing and go on with the movie, cause you missed the funny part of the thing.

What did you think of the first one? Be honest now.

Don't bother seeing it, Mike. They show CZJones in a red dress with no underwear at the end to make you leave the theater with a good impression, but even that is not enough. Good thing we have cheap tickets, but I still wasted 2 hours of my valuable life.

It's not out over here yet. I loved the first one though. I also liked Big Fish

Van Helsing was awful. And that was WITH Kate Beckinsale. Shame. Hellboy was a bit poo too.

Seems I am the only one who actually liked it. The first one was better, but it wasn't a bad movie.

Relatively speaking, with all the Hollywood shit.

Weird that nobody mentioned Ocean's 12. Well I'm not sure it's "overrated" cause nobody seemed to like it anyway, but it sure blew.

fahrenheit 9/11 was probably the most overrated of the year.

Back on topic:
I forgot to mention Un long dimanche de fiancailles and Hellboy (though I liked Guillermo Del Toro's previous films).

I liked it a lot, untill then I couldn't stand the U2, but that film made me think in another way about them. The soudtrack, the story, is very good!

And what about Million Dollar Hotel? I loved it, I even could listen to the U2!

WINGS OF DESIRE is classic. i love Wim Wenders. one of my favorite Wim Wenders is the harder-to-find KINGS OF THE ROAD. anyone seen that?

brian - never saw MATCHSTICK MEN. don't know if i'm into seeing her play a 13 year old. but i am into her.

The Wings of desire, sorry, not overrated at all, and not very recent, but I just saw it again and needed to share it with you. It's a masterpiece!

i thought the point of big fish was that your life is whatever you make of it - you can focus on the negative aspects, or you can make it seem like a wonderful, epic tale. all of the characters in his stories, when revealed at his funeral, were real; he just exaggurated them to a great degree. his life was still extraordinary, except his telling of it made it even more so

That´s the moral I did think came across in Big Fish, the father for example, he was just all stories and no centre. Of course it´s possible to write enigmatic characters like that and have me care about them, but not here. Except for the part I liked about Danny DeVito´s lawyer being the clown stood beside him, I thought it was a rather drab and sickly Frank Capra throwback. The voiceover is clumsy as hell too.

Since this has nothing to do with overrated films anymore, I suggest people (I don't know if it will get a release outside the ROI) try to see Adam & Paul, great little Irish film.

Spiderman 2: good
Shrek 2: SUCKED
English Patient: good
Traffic: kinda sucked
Life Is Beautiful: SUCKED
Shakespeare In Love: SUCKED!! What's going on with this piece of crap? I can't believe it won an Oscar.

I like the theme of it all, I just didn't like the film.

i didn't read the book. but i thought Ewan MacGregor was excellent in it and i liked the theme of story. i, like Kathryn, was touched too. which is saying something for someone who's heart is made out of snow cone

did you ever read the book?

Personally, I honestly found myself waiting for the film to hurry up and end. It was lacking.

i didn't think BIG FISH was trying to say it's better to live in fiction. but maybe, how you perceive things is what matters; a big part of life is how your approach it. also, i kind of took it as an ode to storytelling in general. (and filmmaking).. surly you would admit that things would be pretty shitty without stories..
