I tried to cash a check drawn from Bank of America (BA) at a BA and they wanted my finger print.
BA also charges a $5 fee to cash a check drawn from their bank or Goverment check.
I think all the rest of the fees are a percentage of the amount of the check ?
So does anybody use BA ?
I use US Bank. Think thier Banco witch is world wide.
How are the banks in your part of the world ?

Banks, schmanks. I get MY checks cashed by a guy in a dark alley. I always get half of it in the form of cocaine.

My point was..
If you cash a check at the bank it is drawn from, why do you need to give them more then ID ?

i used to work in a bank while i was in university. people would come in a bitch every day how evil the banks were. how much money they were making and then charging all these ridiculous fees. it was very amusing. a large number of people in canada really hate the major banks. i never really liked working there because they were cheap and total slavedrivers. but it was a job and there were cute girls that came in a fair amount of the time so i shouldn't complain.

Most large banks are moving to biometric ID measures "to prevent fraud and identity theft" - who knows? Another hurdle is the US Check 21 law - it allows a digital image of a check to act as a legal entity in place of the physical check. This has huge implication on the near term expansion of retail banks, as their branches are no longer tied to the proximity to check processing centers. It also opens another route for fraud etc. The fees are crap - pure profit. Happy banking!

Yep. I agree. I bank with a small local bank after five regiment- and fee-filled years with that nameless Soviet-style bureaucracy called the BOFA.

Apply for membership with a Credit Union.

I did.

Watched most of those fees disappear.
