Dec 13, 2004
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Christmas is the deadliest day of the year for Americans with 12.4 percent more deaths than normal, researchers said on Monday.
More Americans die from heart attacks and other natural causes on Christmas, the day after and on New Year's Day than on any other days of the year, the researchers reported.
It is probably because people are feeling too busy or too festive to go to the hospital over the winter holiday season, the researchers wrote in Monday's issue of the journal Circulation.
The researchers, sociologist David Phillips of the University of California San Diego and colleagues there and at Tufts University in Boston, found a 4.65 percent increase in heart deaths and just shy of a 5 percent increase in non-heart deaths over the 14 days spanning the December holidays.
They did not count deaths from suicide, murder or accidents and took into account the perilous effects of a cold snap on health.
"We found that there is a general tendency for cardiac and noncardiac deaths to peak during the winter, but above and beyond this seasonal increase, there are additional increases in heart attack and other deaths around Christmas and New Year's," Phillips said in a statement.
In all, Phillips and colleagues counted more than 42,000 "extra" deaths during the holidays over a 26-year period. Only two years did not see this phenomenon -- 1973, when oil prices peaked and people tended not to travel, and 1981, when a severe recession also kept Americans at home.
"Of all the things we considered that might impact the increase in holiday deaths from natural causes, only two were consistent with our data," Phillips said.
"One possibility is that people tend to delay seeking care for symptoms. Another is that there are often changes in medical staff during the holidays and, consequently, the quality of medical care might be compromised."
The report fits in with a study published in March that found heart attack patients sent to hospitals during the winter holidays are more likely to die than those admitted during the rest of the year,
Clinics, emergency rooms and other health facilities do not operate at top efficiency over the holiday period, said Dr. Trip Meine, a cardiologist at Duke University in North Carolina, who led the study released at an American college of Cardiology meeting.

Yes they do, but sometimes they don´t even think if the person will like it, it´s as an obligation, and when I say that I´m talking about that kind of people...Did I made myself clear? I also like to give presents!

I hadn't read the forum at all in a few days, and when I got back to it, there were too many posts to catch up right away, especially when there's a lot of other stuff to look at on this big ol' Internet. I might finally get around to doing so today.

quote: I don't like Christmas either, and I don't understand at all why absolutely everybody in the United States celebrates it. After all, it's a Christian holiday, yet everybody from Hindus to atheists celebrates Christmas.
It's really just the name that's Christian. Celebrating the winter solstice is pretty universal.
quote: This year, I vow to put the ho in holiday.
But who's going to put the LID on holiday?
As for Santa, I think the current image most people have of him is based on Coca-Cola commercials, but they didn't create the actual figure or the legends surrounding him.
I'm a fairly cynical person, but I generally like Christmas. Winter, on the other hand, doesn't exactly thrill me.

Oh god, no, I didnt mean it to be directed, sorry, ive been skimming the threads recently, so would not have realised how it would have sounded (or looked..)
What I meant was the fact that its a time of year where everything is made to be like we are supposed to be in a good mood, and be happy etc...I didnt mean I hate Speedy M telling me what to do, I meant i dislike the overwhelming feeling that I sdhould be happy, and 'full of joy' and cant be upset, or depressed or anything around this time.........
But i completely see what it looked like, and I apologise for any offence cause speedy m - was most definately not dirested towards you.
For the record, Im not full of cynicism this year, particularly. its gonna be a good one this year (I hope!)
Now I do as I please and lie through my teeth. Someone might get hurt but it won't be me. I should probably feel cheap but I just feel free and a little bit empty. No it isn't so hard to get close to me. There will be no arguments. We will always agree. And I will try and be kind when I ask you to leave. We will both take it easy. But if you stay too long inside my memory, I will trap you in a song tied to a melody and I will keep you there so you can't bother me. |

My new, shorter sig.
That´s right Franck, when you have children everything changes and sometimes you must pretend that you enjoy Christmas and some other things...
I should like Christmas because it´s the time of the year that I earn more and because of the Christmas that my business goes very well, people get crazy buying!
Maybe one day I´ll get used to it, but I´m glad to see that many people still enjoy Christmas time.

Posted - 12/07/2004 : 16:11:17 Tre, I'll gladly meet you under the parasitic plant. I shall do a gallant, bending old fashoined smak-aroo on ye.
Christmas bothers me for the obvious reasons, but mainly because I feel I'm being told, very clearly and loudly, by most all of the world that I am to feel a certain way and do a certain thing. Umm, no. Childish authority problem maybe, but there it is. Other holidays bother me too..because they seem to invilve ritual...I hate rituals..i hate patterns...anything regular bothers me...can't go to sleep at the same time every night, hate coming to work at the same time all the time... Issues, man. I gots issues.
However, we must all get ready for the full-tilt, we're gonna be so god damned jolly you could rape our mother and we'd thank you, gimme gimme gimme gimme sumthin, get drunk, eat too much, smile at the asshole you hate, deal with srangers wishing you a 'merry christmas!' and all the other crap that we in the US have hung on this holiday like so much weighty garbage on Charlie Brown's little ol' tree.
*smooch*

I had decorations. Well, I dont hate them, i just hate cheap tacky ones...butt hats all we can ever afford...Ive told my mother we are not to ahve a tree this year.
I hate the fact my entire family still is kinda trying to revolve the day around me. Like im still 7, and care! Its not thir fault. After years of every xmas revolving around me (only child - only grand child with 4 uncles...), its hard to kind of let go of that, but then i feel guilty if i feel a bit bored, or something, when iall i wanna do its get drunk. It just becomes depressing,
Shouldnt be like hat this year though. My boyfriend is coming to xmas with me. heh.
Purely out of interest, what, and who am I being harsh to in this post??!?!?! I really am quite confused, did i miss something?????
I was purely expressing why christmas is not usually something I look forward too, howevfer this year I am..............please please, Tre and Dean, enlighten me to why im being harsh, i generally have no idea!

In the spirit of Christmas, as I understand it, both of you are getting the jet pack ski thingie, whatever it's called.
It should be noted that this maxes out all the gifts floop is getting, what with the Jennifer Connely/motorcycle/shark aquarium extravaganza that's ongoing at a nearby thread.
Also, please note that Tre will not be giving out any kisses underneath the mistletoe, so don't try to steer her there. She has given her all in that naughty email hug-and-then-some with Dean.

I too grew up in a highly dysfunctional family that practiced ALL the conventions but essentially NEVER had an honest conversation. For what it's worth, Fathers Day is similarly loathesome, and I'm not to keen on birthdays either. All of it just seemed like only so much substitution for real love and interest. And unfortunately I see the vast majority of American families as being much the same, with neurotic adults neglecting the innermost needs of their children, all the while going to ludicrous lengths to live up to the traditions and conventions of these holy days. The contrast between appearance and reality is just too painful.
Father's day is a particular downer because it always falls in the final round of golf's US Open and the announcers always manage to play up the family, seriously marring the coverage. darwin, I consider relatively happy people and families to be insane only in the sense that beasts in general might be said to be insane. Their instincts have been permited to develop in what are seen as healthy ways, and so they actually have a decent shot at personal fulfillment. The consolation, at least to those of us outside looking in, is their very healthiness inhibits their insight into their own conditions. Conversely, we head-cases may be our own worst enemies but at least some of us (think we) can see more deeply into the human condition. Small consolation, admittedly, and perhaps delusional, but that's about all I've got. Wish I could be as generous as Tre, and congratulate others on their enjoyment, but instead I straddle the line between revelling in my alienation and wishing I could be more like those I've convinced myself I revile.
Wow, alot of that is extremely familiar. The tough part comes when you have children of your own.

No no, no censorship here. Anything I edited I did so because I realised it was unfair and might upset some people. Or because in hindsight it was a touch too personal, some things I don't want to share. Mr-Moderator-Super-Hug-Cult-Of-Frank was most just and myself, I don't think he should exclude his opinion at all as it is something we all have a right to. For the record, just so nobody misconstues the discussion as censorship, I am not offended and was never offended that someone doesn't like Christmas. Nor did I ever chastise her for creating the thread or sharing her thoughts on Christmas. I only said that I thought anyone should be able to find something in Christmas to like in my opinion, even if they're not necessarily happy, the idea of the holiday has some good things behind it.
I know as a moderator I should probably keep my opinions to myself, but sometimes I gotta say what I think, too!
