If there's one time of year when it might be nice to ease up on the cynicism and focus on the positive things, this is it. |

Aren't all of those people clogging up your downtown paying the sales taxes that keep your city going? Just saying. Happy holidays! |

I hate how people get crazy with Christmas having an excuse for having to buy everythig, for beeing so hypocrital, pretending that they love all the people...all that makes me sick. The only thing I like is too look to my daughter's face and see that she still beleives in Santa Claus!

I've heard Santa Claus was actually created by the Coca Cola Company (hence the colors, red and white). Can anyone confirm this or is it just another urban legend?
Let's all celebrate Yuletide by reading Lovecraft's "The Festival".

i hate christmas too. i love new years eve tho'. PS: the santa claus is a scandinavian tradition but became world wide accepted due to the coca cola commercials i think. said that every nation (in europe at least) has a different tradition on christmas. in greece for example the presents are brought by St Vasileios and should be opened after midnight in new years eve and not in christmas. other nations believe that it's St Nicolas to bring the gifts. go figure.

I dislike cerrtain aspects of it.
I had decorations. Well, I dont hate them, i just hate cheap tacky ones...butt hats all we can ever afford...Ive told my mother we are not to ahve a tree this year.
I hate the fact my entire family still is kinda trying to revolve the day around me. Like im still 7, and care! Its not thir fault. After years of every xmas revolving around me (only child - only grand child with 4 uncles...), its hard to kind of let go of that, but then i feel guilty if i feel a bit bored, or something, when iall i wanna do its get drunk. It just becomes depressing,
Shouldnt be like hat this year though. My boyfriend is coming to xmas with me. heh.
Now I do as I please and lie through my teeth. Someone might get hurt but it won't be me. I should probably feel cheap but I just feel free and a little bit empty. No it isn't so hard to get close to me. There will be no arguments. We will always agree. And I will try and be kind when I ask you to leave. We will both take it easy. But if you stay too long inside my memory, I will trap you in a song tied to a melody and I will keep you there so you can't bother me. |

Thats the one thing i dislike. Why are supposed to be all happy and nice ans stuff once a year? surely it would be better all year round.
Grrgh, i hate being told how to feel/think

I'm all about his (one-time) female counterpart, also from Matador, Liz Phair. Well, hell, she still looks good even if she is trying to be 17 years old and putting out crappy bubblegum records (which I secretly like the few songs I've heard... in a VERY guilty pleasure kind of way).

What's your deal Mel? You've been a bit of, well, not nice this past while.
Feel better!
As for Christmas/'bah hambug', when is being a jaded cynic ever good for anyone? It's one thing to be maybe a little cynical or rather questioning. But to derive no pleasure from something that, at it's core, is still about love and family and maybe taking a step back to reflect on what's really important in life strikes me as over the top. You can complain all you want about the commercialization, complain that what I've said is not what it's about to most people anymore, but all that matters is what it means to you.
We only have one day a year to remember veterans, one day a year for all sorts of things. It doesn't mean you're supposed to completely ignore them the other 364, it's just a day to remind you and keep it alive.
That's all. If it means nothing to you, or worse, that's fine. Just my thoughts on it.

Which is all well and good if you have somewhere to go, a simple family life, a reliable group of friends or a partner to spend it with. When you've got another christmas of alone to look forward to or feeling like an outsider at someone elses happy christmas gathering it is rather hard to get enthusiastic.
I'm not complaining about the consumerism, that was a teasing dig more than anything. It's the emptiness that bugs me.

Consumerism stickyness is all right with me as long as it means that people buy me presents.
Apart from that, I don't really care. I suppose it would be different if I had children, but I don't, so I just spoil myself and forget about it :)

What in the posts of this thread have been not very nice?!?! When i said i dont like being told how to feel, i meant by well, society, not any one here.
Just because i dislike certain aspects of christmas does not in any way make me 'not nice' person........

I'd probably hate it too but its too fun when you have little ones. You plan to do things together and the christmas concert is always great. The more activities we do together the more whipped up into a frenzy they get. If it wasn't for the kids it'd be lame.

Whats wrong with you all?
Christmas is fantastic, you get time off work, presents and eat until you're sick.
I can understand the dislike if you don't have a family or close friends (or if you just dislike your family.)

Tre, instead of giving you a run for your money in the I-hate-Christmas-and-I-am-cynical Department, I am going to give you that jet ski thingie that floop covets. Look in your postal box in a couple of weeks, dollface, and there it will be.
Seriously, people, how can you not see how in America, at least, the end of the year holidays are only a time of stress and consumerism?
I make with my family what few presents we give to our loved ones; I spend a very quiet day with dear friends; and I am raising my child to know that Santa is fake. But she does have the spirit of giving and of being quiet during the solstice and of revering nature. And of listening to Frank's music blasting in the living room while we cook dinner with our friends.
Lastly, Dean, and I mean this in a sweet way, being a jaded cynic helps me a lot and makes me a happier person.

Kathryn,
Why did you decide not pretend that Santa is real? I'm just curious about your reasoning. I have 6 year old who still believes and I don't see it doing her any harm. Being atheist (techinically an agnostic) this might seem to be inconsistent parenting for me, but I don't think so. |

I don't like Christmas either, and I don't understand at all why absolutely everybody in the United States celebrates it. After all, it's a Christian holiday, yet everybody from Hindus to atheists celebrates Christmas. It's the equivelent of a Russian celebrating the Fourth of July; or of a Nigerian celebrating Thanksgiving. I guess when presents are involved, anybody will celebrate anything.

Tre - Thanks for the thread. We agree! Can't stand this time of year. More garbage than usual on TV. Tons of morons clogging up city streets in a quest for mostly meaningless gifts for tons of other morons. Vacations wasted with families. One extended lie, both spiritually and materially, just another period when sane people are expected keep their mouths shut.
This year when anybody says "Merry Xmas" to me, I'm gonna reply "Go with Landru". |

What a bunch of kill joys. Anyone around here remember being excited about Christmas when they were a kid? I loved it and I still do. Yeah, it largely about getting presents for me (I'm agnostic). What's wrong with that? I don't buy myself many things, so it's fun to get some CDs, books, and games. And, now that I've got kids it's more fun again. It's fun getting the tree, playing music, baking some cookies, wrapping presents, watching Rudolph or Charlie Brown, playing with the toys, and doing family traditions. |

I don't have anything against Christmas... just the horrendous music it inspires people to create...or RE-create for that matter. But when it comes to Christmas I like the fact that I get time off, I like the fact that you get to show the people you care about just how much you care(which kind of crayons you use for the cards) and I like winter from the inside. I love sitting in my house knowing that I don't have to go out into that winter wonderland, it's such a comforting feeling. Other than that, I really don't care. New Years is more my thing.

I guess I'm not the best candidate to respond in this thread, mostly because I've never once celebrated Christmas, but I must say that I enjoy the Christmas season. My favorite Christmas memories are of my family and me going skiing on near empty mountains on Christmas day. While everyone is inside celebrating, eating, giving and receiving, we Jews are living it up; taking advantage of the lack of crowds everywhere. I do feel though, that the Christmas spirit envelopes everyone, regardless of religion. It’s impossible to escape the warm-cozy feeling that accompanies the holiday, and I fully embrace the joy and security it brings me. It also makes me happy to hear about the way some of you FB.netters enjoy Christmas with your families, and it upsets me to hear how stressful the holiday can be for others. As an outsider of the holiday, I get to enjoy all the aesthetic beauty (as tacky as it may sometimes be) of colored lights and pretty trees, while I get to also enjoy the pleasure of not providing gifts for numbers of family members. Happy holidays everybody.

Nice new sig, Sir Rock. I am proud to say I recognize it, if only because I was just doing some Flood-related stuff with Rita earlier today.
Your post reminded me of one of my favorite Xmas memories: my husband and me walking the beach at Big Sur, the only people as far as the eye could see.
Again, not to be Grinchy about it but when I read in your post "the Christmas spirit" I immediately and only thought about crazy consumeristic orgies -- too many cookies and credit-card expenditures and the like. I'll stop before further pissing off any more forum members.
This year, I vow to put the ho in holiday.

If all Christmas means to you is getting gifts and shopping, then congratulations, the stores have already won. If all it means to you is worship of Jesus, then you're probably missing the intended point. If you can't see the value in spending time with friends or family and celebrating all that we have to be thankful for (and please, anyone with the time and luxury to be posting on the internet is not going to convince me their life is only filled with negatives) then I guess all I can say is that you might enjoy life more if you could find the positives to cherish.
Life sucks sometimes. It's little things like this that make it okay. Trying to make other people feel bad doesn't really make you feel better, does it?
