I'm very proud of this incident, seeings how it happened right here in Michigan. The NBA definitely needed some spice, and what's spicier than players running into the stands and attacking spectators/fans? That's really bringing the fans into the game, they're no longer just shit-talking observers.
I knew where a link to a video of the brawl was, for the 1 person in the world that hasn't seen it already, but I can't find it anymore. Well, here's the chronology of what happened, jacked from some website:
November 20, 2004, 6:11 PM
Here is a look at the series of events in the brawl Friday night involving the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons and fans at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. The game was stopped when order could not be restored.
-- Indiana's Ron Artest fouled Detroit's Ben Wallace when he went in for a layup with 45.9 seconds left and the Pacers leading 97-82.
-- Wallace wheeled around and delivered a hard, two-handed shove to Artest's chin, which led to pushing and shoving with several players near midcourt.
-- Artest laid on the scorer's table with his hands behind his head, looking relaxed. Wallace tried to get at Artest, but was held back by teammates and coaches.
-- As players shouted at each other, Wallace threw a wristband toward Artest, who stood up briefly before laying back down on the scorer's table.
-- An unidentified fan near midcourt hit Artest in the face with a cup filled with ice and a beverage.
-- Artest stormed into the stands and attacked a fan, who he thought hurled the cup at him.
-- Indiana's Stephen Jackson joined his teammate in the seats and started throwing punches.
-- David Harrison, Eddie Gill and Fred Jones of the Pacers, Detroit's Rasheed Wallace and former Piston Rick Mahorn tried to break up the fight between Pacers and fans, who landed their share of punches.
-- Back on the court near Indiana's bench, Artest punched a fan wearing a Pistons jersey who walked toward him. After another fan tried to tackle Artest and was trying to stand up, Jermaine O'Neal ran toward him and landed a vicious right hand on his face.
-- Pacers players and coaches left the floor and were showered with beer, popcorn and assorted debris, including a folding chair.
-- Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley tried to go back on the court, holding a metal dust pan over his head before being turned back to the locker room.

I'm a huge fan of the NBA, it's probably my favorite sport.
This whole incident provoked a wide array of reactions from myself.

When It first happened I was scrambling around to find the latest news because I didn't know what the hell happened, and now it's everywhere and I am sick of it.
Don't throw shit at Ron Artest.
I think it's a shame he's out for the season, he's one of the best players in the league.
As much hype as this incident has recieved, it pales in comparison to the many soccer/futbal riots... people need to realize that... how many people have DIED at soccer games? in the past few years...
I don't know, it's kinda overwhelming...
There were a couple incidents in hockey in the past couple years, with the stick the face thing... that was pretty brutal, but recieved far less attention than this thing has...
Do you know how easy it is to sneak a gun or a knife into a NBA game? Once the riot started, you had better protect your neck. As bad as it was, it could have been much worse, and I think it's almost good as it has drawn attention to the security issues.
The devil in me is glad there were some ass kickings, the angel says, why didn't you just walk away?
And what really gets me, Artest is the most under-payed player in the league... 7 million a year? Give me a break... he should have been making 20... I hope he gets rehabilitated and comes back next year and plays hard...
But I am sick of this whole mess already, the shit happened, deal with it, and move on... who knows what will happen next???

Hockey's not gay. It's just been overrun by the same people that voted for Bush in this election. (no offense to our resident right-wing contingent whom I largely don't lump in with this stereotype).
I'm just waiting for the NBA to start awarding points for fan beatings.

I watched a clip on the net where an ESPN host referred to the Pistons fans as punks. I couldn't agree more. What was displayed was a perfect representation of what life in the Detroit area is like. That's why I left and more than likely will never return.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

Saw a dude get two of his fingers sliced off by another player's skate during a hockey fight once. He put his hand down to steady himself and someone whizzed right across it. Not pretty. He kept fighting, though, gotta give him that.

Many basketball players come off as immature fools with god complexes, and Artest is one of the worst. I've always wanted to like the guy, but every time I think he's becoming decent he has to lower the bar another three notches.
For whoever that said a hockey fight is less dangerous, I must disagree. I think hockey fights are almost as tough as it gets: for one, the protective equipment you cite doesn't cover the one part of the body subjected to the blows (unless some idiot wants to bust his hand punching a helmet), and on top of that, everything is very different on skates. You try keeping your balance on skates with some 100-kg beast doing everything he can to throw you down. If you can pull that off, try throwing some punches while you're at it. Goonish and ridiculous as it may be, hockey fighting definitely takes skill and I believe it to be one of the most treacherous forms of brawling we have.

Yes kathryn, it's true. Straight, white, male Canadian who does NOT like hockey. In fact, I have two friends who fit the same profile. It's not easy being who I am in this country, but there's a small movement happening, and soon we hope to have equal rights under our charter. |

Most of us. Though the government, in a "Noah's Ark" like effort, takes a few males and females every few years and forces them to mate. Just enough to keep the population near replacement levels. It's for this reason (all the Gay-nucks), that we have such liberal immigration policies. |

Ron Artest is a troubled individual. This will be good for him, he wanted to take a month off anyway, to promote the album he produced. As for Ben Wallace, he's generally acknowledged as a really good guy. A few days before this happened, his older brother died. Artest's foul, while especially brutal, was innapropriate and dangerous. He was trying to hurt/send a message to Wallace. And that's garbage. I always hear announcers talk with reverence about players who foul hard, or that won't allow and easy bucket. If a guy has the lane and there's nothing you can legally do about it, let him get the damn layup. Unless it's to save the championship point, hard fouls are getting out of hand. Players like Brad Miller, Ron Artest, Charles Oakley (from back in the day) are poor examples of good defender and poorer role models for young players. Basketball is a non-contact sport and thugs without skills are the ones who foul. None of that excuses what happened in Detroit. That was pathetic. |

I agree that it would've been funny to see the millionaires beating the crap out of each other.
Although it wasn't cool for that fan to nail Ron Artest with the beer (a nice shot, BTW), it was even more uncool of Artest to go up in the stands and punch the wrong guy. I'm glad he'll get to sit home and lose $5 million in salary. |

I think there was the brawl at the football game the next day merely to distract attention from the Pistons/Pacers brawl. People were tired of seeing one brawl all the time on TV so they figured they'd give the media some new clips.
Or it's all just a reaction to the Presidential election results.

i don't watch TV either. but i was in Vegas and generally in and out of drinking establishments all weekend (had a friend visiting) and that's all that was ever on.
