Posted - 11/18/2004 : 18:10:10 I've heard 'accommodation' is the most commonly misspelled word in the English language. I don't seem to have much trouble with that one. 'Kindergarten' is one I always spell as if it's full of plants, 'kindergarden'. I don't know why (I swallowed the fly).
Spelling was always my forte in elementary school. I could even beat the uber-preppy, academically talented white girls at spelling. Then I watched Spellbound and realized I am only average at best. Those kids in that movie are asked to spell some crazy words, and I'm convinced many of those words were made up on the spot.
Signature's are kind of like bumper stickers, only less sticky. |

Thanks for that, Cheesey. It reminds me of that Dennis Leary bit.

Posted - 11/21/2004 : 11:25:35 How about people who mispronounce words?
It drives me nuts when people say jewlery.
And can we all agree to abide by this rule:
If you can't pronounce the word "nuclear" correctly, you shouldn't be allowed to run a nation that has nukes.

Posted - 11/20/2004 : 14:56:18 I thought "regardless" and "irregardless" meant the same thing, sort of like "flammable" and "inflammable."

Posted - 11/20/2004 : 11:17:54 Oh and "effect" and "affect." A good mnemonic device is the Jam's excellent album Sound Affects. Oh, how I love pre-Style Council Paul Weller. How's that for a digression?

Posted - 11/20/2004 : 11:14:11 This isn't a case of misspelling, but it annoys me every time: people almost always misuse the word "disinterested." Big diff between "disinterested" and "uninterested."

Posted - 11/19/2004 : 23:19:15 i absolutely hate it when people spell "a lot" as "alot". there's a lot of space between "a" and "lot".
also, it's [notice i didn't spell "its"] not "alright", it's "all right", but no one cares, and now it is acceptable to spell it "alright".
words that end in "-ence" or "-ance" always get me.

I've never seen it spelled any way other than "jewelry" here in the States. Must be a crazy British/Canadian spelling.
