blt, yeah, i've only been to a few as well. goes to show how much undiscovered Mexican there is in this city. my theory is, if you go almost anywhere on the East side, or downtown, and stop at a taco stand, it'll probably be good. i'll check out La Cabinita if i get a chance.
i swear by La Tequiza though (on Figueroa).. if you're ever down by USC, you must eat there

floop-- I've only been to a few on that list. There is a Señor Fish in South Pasadena (probably the same mini-chain). They have delicious, though somewhat girthsome, shrimp burritos. I've also been to La Cabiñita many times-- they have a green mole sauce that is second to none. If you ever find yourself in the La Crescenta/Montrose area, do eat there.

i notice your La Estrella is on there. that makes two recommendations.
i've got a lot of work ahead of me
(darwin, that place Tacomiendo is in Inglewood. just a hop skip and a jump from Westchester. could be worth a try.. then you could take the wife and kids to the racetrack afterwards)

i'm not too familiar with Westchester. i know there are a few good places in Manhattan Beach, which is right next door. though i can't remember their names. there's one just directly up from the pier, if you go East from the ocean, i think on Manhattan Blvd. and there's a place called El Tarasco that is supposed to be good (also in Manhattan Beach)
not to break the Mexican Food theme, but if you're ever in the mood for the best burger in the entire world, make a trek up here sometime http://www.fathersoffice.com/
i have no affiliations with them and actually the service kind of sucks. but the burgers are fucking amazing. and they have an excellent beer selection

Posted - 11/16/2004 : 20:58:15 While LA Mexican restaurants have become the theme, floop and BLT do you have any suggestions for places down by LAX/Westchester? My wife's family lives down there (so we visit a couple of times a year) but even though she lived there for many years she doesn't seem to know any good Mexican restaurants in the area. |

Posted - 11/16/2004 : 16:45:36 Carnitas Michoacan sounds very familiar for some reason. haven't been to La Estrella either.
there was a "best of Mexican Food" in LA MAgazine a while back but i never got around to buying it. i was happy to see my favorite place, La Tequiza, at around #12 on the list. it's on Figueroa and 30th.
i have to say, you've got some great places out there in the Valley. that place Pueblo Nuevo, on Empire, is nothing to balk at.
there's a place called Poco's in Canoga Park that probably has the best Mexican seafood i've ever had. a friend of mine who is equally obsessed with mexican introduced me to it.

Another burrito suggestion: Carnitas Michoacan. They have several locations, though the only one I've been to is in Lincoln Heights, N. Broadway one block south of the 5. |

Posted - 11/16/2004 : 16:33:15 if i was in a position to buy i would. i'd be happy even buying a condo (unlike some people who are anti-condo). living in LA i'm pretty much fucked.
houses in my area start at around $600,000. generally more like $750,000. but if you're lucky you could maybe find a piece of shit for $500,000.
it's going to be a while before i'm able to buy. and by that time houses will be going for 2 million

The Story of Fresh
In August of 1990, Jim and Linda Magglos took out a third mortgage on their house and introduced the all-fresh, fire-grilled, quick-casual concept of the first Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill to Newbury Park, California. The incredible flavors and generous portions of their offering created a loyal following, and soon Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill became the most exciting eatery in Ventura County. Like many of us, Jim and Linda grew up on fast food, but as their tastes matured and the fast food offerings remained the same, they began to crave something more, something FRESH. Jim and Linda envisioned a restaurant filled with delicious, fresh aromas of grilled meats and spicy vegetables, with festive music in the background - all in a bright, clean setting where smiling people prepared your order right before your eyes. It was this dream and dedication to quality and freshness that continues to make Baja Fresh® the success that it is. Today, Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill is evolving from a regional phenomenon into a national success. The rapid success of Baja Fresh®, evidenced by its high unit sales and the overwhelming number of requests to franchise, attracted the attention of restaurant industry veterans and the nation's leading investment firms. In 1998, Jim and Linda realized that the concept they created required careful management in order to reach its full potential. It was this realization that brought Greg Dollarhyde and Pete Siracusa into the picture. Dollarhyde and Siracusa, collectively have over 60 years of restaurant experience. Their restaurant experience married with their passion for FRESH brought the total restaurant count from 29 to well over 288 today. Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill's success took yet another leap in the summer of 2002, when Wendy's International acquired the company. Baja Fresh® Mexican Grill functions as a wholly owned subsidiary and remains loyal to the vision of becoming "the leading national restaurant brand known as the defining standard in FRESH Mexican food."

Posted - 11/16/2004 : 14:42:20 In their defense, I think McDonalds bought them out. So, their philosophy was (or is?) their own (not some marketing decision by McDonalds). Also, while McDonalds is to be avoided for health reasons, I think they have made some progressive decisions that then ripple through the whole industry (like getting rid of styrofoam and the chicken farm example). I remember hearing something on NPR about how if McDonalds changes the regulations they put on their suppliers then it changes how almost everyone operates since McDonalds is such a big buyer. |

Posted - 11/16/2004 : 14:33:46 i think Chipotle is decent, but not as good as Baja Fresh. i like the fact that they have carnitas at Chipotle (sadly missing from the Baja Fresh menu).. but their meat doesn't taste as good as Baja. probalby because it's sitting in those things all day.
also, they don't have fish tacos.
if i were somewhere where i couldn't get good Mexican food and they had a Chipotle, i'd be pleased.
i think Baja Fresh should be open in the morning and start serving breakfast burritos. tell me that's not a good idea.

Also, perhaps it doesn't matter, but did you Chipotle is owned by McDonalds. http://www.licenseenews.com/news/news50.html
No I didn't! Thanks for the link, darwin.
That sucks in a way, but at least I like Chipotle, and their food choice philosophy (natural, free-range, etc.). Maybe it will provide a way for McDs to become a better company. One thing that PETA managed to do that was productive was getting McDs to demand humane treatment and environment in chicken farms. Considering how huge McDs is, that was a major influence on agribusiness. So, I guess I'm happy to support their little experiment in providing healthy good-tasting food that was produced in a more humane manner than most.
edit: then again, after reading that website further, maybe I won't. Bastards. |

Posted - 11/16/2004 : 13:59:02 The closest I get to Mexican fast food is when I drive by Taco Bell on my way to school everyday. Never been inside a Taco Bell, I'm proud to say. Would be interested in checking out this so called Baja Fresh though. From what I understand, I'm severly lacking in the Mexican fast food portion of the food pyramid.

Even better than Baja fresh.
Deliciously juicy marinaded meat, perfectly-made guacamole, whole black beans or pinto vs. lame refried excuse for beans, and passionate salsas. They even use free-range chickens and pigs. Lots of vegetarian menu choices too.
