They were talking about them in some newspapers because they are re-releasing Crooked Rain and it made me take out my Pavement records.

What a great band it was! One of my highschool favorites. Their attitude was so classy, their music so smart, their lyrics so funny. And they were not pretending to be rock stars.

I look at those new rock bands, the Strokes etc. All their albums put together are not worth one song by Pavement.

Modest Mouse wishes they could be as compelling and original as the Pixies and Pavement.

Wowee Zowee took me the longest to get into of all the albums, it's seriously deconstructed and all the songs seem to fall apart, but eventually it makes sense. There's some amazing songs on that record. Grounded, Fight This Generation, Rattled by the Rush, We Dance, Half a Canyon, Serpentine Pad.

The shows on the DVD are pretty solid, especially the performance of Grounded. Malkmus is in dorky rock star mode during that, and it's awesome.

I saw a performance from 1997 where they sounded pretty bad on most of the songs.

Nowadays, Malkmus is a fantastic guitar player. He's improved greatly on singing and playing. Some may view that as a bad thing.
But the Jicks are a great live show. And the bassist, Joanna Bolme, is hot.

Signature's are kind of like bumper stickers, only less sticky.

Slanted & Enchanted is prob their best. Modest Mouse was even playing that cd while they were setting up their equipment at the NY show.

I have a couple of Pavement shows, and they don't sound too bad. Difficult to say which one I like best, all albums have cracking songs, and also a couple of real shitty ones. Terror Twilight is probably my fave.

This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate!

SM is good.
it all worked real well w/ pavement.
they had some studio magic, but live shows were rotten.
i mean i want my $ plus back bad.

you know, that photo makes them look like the cast of an 80's sitcom. And not a high level one either. We're talking Charles in Charge here.

While it still kinda baffles me why so many people *love* this band, I have to admit that Slanted/Enchanted is a classic - it must've inspired countless home recordists. Terror Twilight is almost as good.

Three best Pavement songs: Fame Throwa, The Hexx, List of Dorms

Have you heard the song Grounded? And not the faster version, the Wowee Zowee version.

I can't get into them despite my effort.

The Slow Century DVD was what really got me into Pavement. I owned a few of their albums and listened from time to time, but after seeing the videos and live performances, I became obsessed.

It's hard to pick a favorite album, but Crooked Rain Crooked Rain comes to mind. The reissue is great, with all sorts of stuff I never heard before, so it's kind of like having a new Pavement record. The Strings of Nashville is enchanting.

Ahh, fond memories of watching 120 Minutes late at night and catching pavement, liz phair, belly, and mazzy star videos. I miss that.

I like Malkmus' solo stuff a bunch, but its just not the same. I miss alt-rock

No. There is nothing in this world you absolutely need to hear. Except maybe "Box Elder".

Pavement greatly improved transportation. Could you imagine driving on dirt roads all the time?

Wait, you're talking about the BAND. I've heard several of their songs, and I thought they were pretty good, but not as wonderful as everyone else seems to think. Are there any songs of theirs that I absolutely need to hear?

I absolutely love Pavement. I've only been listening to them for about two years, and only own Slanted and Enchanted, Crooked Rain, Wowee Zowee, and Brighten the corners, but I adore each album. I generally listen to Crooked Rain and Brighten the Corners the most, have difficulty deciding which album I like better. I was using a line from Blue Hawaiian as my sig here for a while, its such a great song. "Aloha means goodbye and also hello, its in how you inflect, put the bark in the dog and you've got a guardian." That just sends shivers down my spine. As for SM's solo work, I've listened to both albums, prefer Pig Lib to the S/T, but I haven't given either a really fair listening to. I do remeber that I really like Do Not Feed the Oysters though, from Pig Lib.

I think I own one single, cant even remember the title of it, but it mentions the smashing pumpkins, will have to buy that reissue though as I feel my pavement section is seriously lacking.

Love em. Sitting here in my "Pavement?" speech bubble tshirt just being reminded to put Wowee Zowee on. I reckon SM's solo stuff is almost as great.

Sunday at the office. I remember. I remember well.

Crank up the music in your headphones, M.

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

I've only seen two of their videos, "Cut your hair" and "Shady Lane", which were both incredibly funny.

If I have enough time today (once again, I'm spending my Sunday at the office), I will buy Slow Century.

Right now, I'm listening to "Brighten the corners", which has its great moments as well ("Hawaiian Blue" is an incredible song).

Pavement were incredible. Slanted & Enchanted, Crooked Rain and the Watery Domestic EP are my favorite records by the band. I've combined most of Wowee Zowee with some of the better songs on the last two records and that makes a great listen as well. I'd prefer Pavement to solo SM any day.

Their video for Gold Sounds is one of the best ever. Watch the Slow Century DVD with commentary switched on. Kannenberg and Nastanovich (sp?) are incredibly funny. They have a dig at Malkmus on the alternate Major Leagues video where he acts al cute and lovely eyed. (The DVD was compiled after Pavement split up)

Take a look at the pic, they're one of the sexiest bands ever?(except for Westy the drummer)

I think SM solo is as good as pavement
altought I have to say that I don't own all the pavement albums
but soon I'll have a look at the bigger picture

I was listening to Slanted & Enchanted last night.
Pavement were such an excellent band, it's a shame they split up!

Stephen Malkmus's solo stuff is ok, but not as good as Pavement.
