On a lighter note, it just suddenly got cold the other day, icy breezes after some sweaty, warm days. The weather is still up and down, generally moderate. Strange weather!

Posted - 01/22/2007 : 09:12:28 I'll second that. Five straight weeks of snow and cold in Denver now, and no end in sight. That's not normal here, despite our being in the Rocky Mountains. (It always snows a lot at the ski areas, but not so much in the city.) There's been so much snow, the city hasn't been able to plow it all off the streets. The streets are full of icy ruts (covered with snow again after yesterday's 6 or 8 inches), and the auto body shops are making a killing because people keep wrecking. Me, I'm ready to move to L.A., with its occasional "dusting" of snow. I guess I've gone soft.
And aren't you havin' fun? |

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Snow fell on the palm trees of West Los Angeles and Malibu Wednesday afternoon as Jack Frost visited the Southland again.
NBC4 forecaster Fritz Coleman said the mixture of precipitation in West Los Angeles at about 3 p.m. included a dusting of snow. Residents in West Los Angeles said the snow accumulated in parking lots, on cars and around palm trees near Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards and other areas.
Most of the snow fell south of Sunset Boulevard and just east of the 405 Freeway. Residents told NBC4 that several inches of snow fell in their yards.
The last snowfall recorded at Los Angeles International Airport was in January 1962, according to the National Weather Service. Trace amounts -- less than 0.5 inches -- were reported, according to the NWS. (snip)
My main political go-to guy Glenn Reynolds posts at http://instapundit.com/ :
“Okay, actually just as (contrary to media treatments) a spell of hot weather doesn't prove global warming, cold weather doesn't disprove it. But I think that the real cause of this cold snap in the L.A./Hollywood area is that Al Gore has been shortlisted for an Oscar. Al just can't catch a break.
“I'm not the first to note this phenomenon.
“UPDATE: Hey, it's made the Urban Dictionary:
‘Gore Effect
‘The well documented phenomenon that leads to very low, unseasonal temperatures, driving rain, hail, snow or all of the above whenever Al Gore visits an area to discuss global "warming". Hence the "Gore Effect."’
“How does he do it?”
Me, Erebus, here: In Reno we've been in the icebox for days. I think we finally got above freezing today. I know, wimpy by the standards of our ubiquitous Canadian fbnetters, but pretty damn cold for a boy raised in Texas. Spent a few nights at 5 degrees Fahrenheit, making sure the faucets were dripping overnight to prevent freezing and bursting. As a longstanding habit I never run the furnace overnight. Don't want to wake up dead from carbon monoxide. Anyway, it's kinda cozy sleeping under thermal sheets and two comforters. And it consoles to be watching Australian Open tennis where they're worried over 120 degree temps at courtside. The alltime record in Reno, dating back about 120 years, is 19 below, but I did see 16 below about 17 years ago. Did walk a couple blocks to a Seven-Eleven once when it was seven below, in quest of post-midnight beer. That's motivation.

I love winter rain storms. Not only do you get the floods, but months later you get wildfires from all of the extra vegetationa and then mud slides from all of the burned up vegetation. It's the California cycle. |
