Posted - 10/14/2004 : 05:56:50 Yes, he stated that he was ripping off the Pixies with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', and of course he was emulating the Melvins with everything prior to Nevermind...but if you've ever heard the Rocket From The Tombs' version of 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo', you would say that half way thru the song, you were listening to 'Aneurysm' by Nirvana.
Except the RFTTT version was recorded in 1974...now in case you didnt know, RFTTT was a band that consisted of mainly members that would eventually become Pere Ubu (who redid the tune and toned it down in comparison)....
but only recently have RFTTT emerged on commercially available recordings. However, tapes have always circulated among those lucky enough to be 'in the know'....apparently Cobain was one of them and thought he was slick (who's gonna know?)....
anyone else notice this? |

Posted - 10/16/2004 : 18:50:15 Even In His Youth and About A Girl bear musical similarities to Out For A Walk and Bag Full Of Thoughts by the Flaming Lips. Both songs are from the "Flaming Lips" EP, which was released in '84 or '85.
There's a Fugazi song (I think it's from In On The Killtaker) that contains the Aneurysm intro riff, except in the Fugazi song it starts on B instead of F#.
Is that the riff you guys are talking about? |

Posted - 10/16/2004 : 02:24:08 So I checked out me fathers Rocket from the tombs cd and yes in the middle
not a style rip off, but a direct note for note rip off!
It's not on the pere ubu version not on the new (2003) Rocket from the tombs version only on the 1975 one. The song is pretty simple and than around the bridge it transfers into a riff and it's almost the same as aneurysm maybe a slightly other accent but really, believe me this is pure thievery
aneurysm was like my favourite nirvana song

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 07:49:17 i'ven ever heard 30 seconds over tokyo but to be fair it's a fairly simple riff.
i would have to hear the original to compare.
as far as SLTS, it's only a style ripoff, not a direct note for note riff ripoff. |
