What is it about that sound I can't get? Where is My Mind, Bullet, etc etc.. I can't seem to get that "jingly jangly" sound...
I am on an acoustic, I guess it has something to do with the fact that he has an amp? When I play it, it sounds too "bassy" and just doesn't have that Frank sound...
I was playing Where is My Mind with power chords, then i tried using Barre chords instead so i could get those higher notes in, but it still sounds too Bassy...
argghhhh i want it to sound right! Especially the the last chord in "WIMM".. it sounds so cool when frank plays it and I just cant match it..
GRR,, help?

I have a broken orange Dunlop pick from FB from the DITS tour.
I know that Steve Albini had them use metal picks for Sufer Rosa and I'm pretty sure that FB uses thin to medium picks.
Thin picks are great for strumming an acoustic. Such a different fuller sound then using a heavy pick. A heavy pick is good for an electric or lead work.

i got one a few of those after hearing he used them, and a couple of yellow ones too. is it normal for the entire logo to rub off after not much heavy use, or am i just a sweaty teenager?? |

frank uses an orange dunlop pick. I've got one he used at a show here but I can't read the numbers anymore. It's interesting how the pick became after he played with it, I'm trying to do the same now. |

Metal picks? Coins?
Horrible, horrible ideas...both. Can you say "wear down your strings"? Also, I advise anyone who has an energetic strumming style to STEER clear of metal picks. Unless you want your pickguard to look an abstract art piece.
Coins...probably the WORST makeshift pick you could use! In a bind, I find that breaking off the corner of a cassette-tape case work pretty well. So does cutting a pick-shaped device out of an old credit card (this one has served me well, remember it next time you are desparate for a pick and can't seem to find one. But make sure you don't need the credit card afterwards!)

haha, is that how they play in the ghettos? keep it real. 
maybe it was. i'm not sure how they/he gets that sound then.

according to the gouge documentary they used metal picks... anyone tried that? does that add too the effect? i'm considering picking myself up some, to experiment...

try using a thin pick too. i think a lot of that "jingly jangly" sound is just the sound of the pick. infact, sometimes its hard to distinguish between chords because most of what you hear is just the pick! |

i just have a little Epiphone acoustic. it has new strings so thats not it.
i guess its just an electric/acoustic thing.

yeah, i have also wanted to get that sound before, it's quite annoying. and yeah, older strings sound flatter, try new ones. |

what kind of guitar do you have? i have an old yamaha from the 60s or 70s. it cant get those high type of pitches either. but if you play an acousitc electric you could get the sound easily. or get new strings, older the strings flatter the sound. if it doesnt already have it, just mess around witht the mids and the treble. hope that helps.
