What device for sound effects does Black Francis use to create the sound of a acoustic guitar out of his Telecaster? Does anybody know that?
Merci!

It was reissued a few years back. Sells for about £160 in the UK!

Thanks for the clarification Ziggy. I re-read your facebook quote and should have realized, though I have never seen TC Electronics stuff on sale over here and am not familiar with the name.

It's TC Electronic Line Driver/Booster that he's using for distortion, for sure. Which he's had for about twenty years. But there's a switch box on the board too. Maybe one of the Marshalls is cranked up.

He's been using a Klon Centaur overdrive pedal when solo (that fantastic tone he has with the Bluefinger/Svn Fngrs band).

Thanks for the quote. I assume that he is going straight through the amp for distortion apart from one song when he says this?

(not knowing much about this myself)

From Facebook. I can't post the pic of his pedal board. Forget how.

Charles Thompson: pedal on left is volume for "acoustic"(yes. for the piezo on the tele run through two california blondes ...for my monitoring purposes). I use the rat only for the end of "into the white". i keep the pedal board behind me next to the amp so I don't trip over it.

Those Teles from the Nashville shows are his modified Contemporary Teles (limited run from Fender Japan in the 80s).

That what they used to look like (humbuckers, Floyd Rose style trem bridge). He's had them drastically modified, but kept the whammy.

The Tele with the piezo bridge is a different one altogether. I think it's the one in the Reading 2001 video, when it still had a vintage style bridge.

And to finish, some quotes from the Man himself, concerning his current pedal board. thanks to Facebook.

"the tc electronics box is about 20 years old. i thought it wasn't working AND I CLEANED IT MYSELF with some blower and IT WORKED! i was so proud. and i dig it, too.

Come to think of it, I think you're right, if you find
where he talks about the customization on his Teles he
mentions some type of bridge.

Did that get lost in one of the wipe-outs or was it an
article? Let me google!

The $50 Zoom multi did that better than I think you
would expect.

Here's the page I was looking for.

Find OldManInaCoffeeCan

The Tele in his left hand is an odd looking thing! No
pickups, no controls! OK I see, just what the article
says, one pickup like an Esquire, one volume, no tone
controls.

No mention of a piezo. Is there any video of him playing
with that sound? One of the electric solo shows maybe?

I can't find one! Maybe you're listening to an acoustic
guitar!??

I got distracted. The Pixies are still spell-binding.

Pretty sure it's not an acoustic simulator pedal. They sound terrible (slightly less worse if you plug into a PA/decent acoustic amp).

Fender makes a couple of Teles with the Powerbridge in as stock. Plus, if you've got the chip inside, you can blend the electric and the piezo tones. I think you can see BF doing this in the 'Fort Wayne' live performances. Pretty sure he does it for songs like 'Number 13 Baby' on the current Pixies tour too.

My friend has a Zoom G1 with an acoustic simulator that
is very convincing. It could be something like that.

The first of these I had heard is about 10-15 years old
by Boss and it isn't good.

Piezo bridge, presumably.

Fishman Powerbridge is popular for this kind of thing.
