Black Re-Interprets Pixies, Gets Mellow In Nashville

Amid the Pixies' wildly successful reunion tour, vocalist/guitarist Frank Black has found time to prep two new albums, including a double-disc set. Tentatively due Oct. 12 via spinART is "Frank Black Francis," the first disc of which features his pre-Pixies demos, while the second disc sports new recordings of more than a dozen Pixies songs with Two Pale Boys' Andy Diagram and Keith Moline.

Among the cuts featured on the second disc are reinterpretations of the Pixies' "Cactus," "Into the White," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "The Holiday Song" and "Caribou."

Black says the re-recordings stemmed from his desire to augment the demo material, which is of substandard audio fidelity, but has been in high demand for commercial release for years. "I did them to balance out the sh*ttiness of this little time capsule piece, so that Joe Blow, who may not know who the heck I am or who the Pixies are, wouldn't feel completely ripped off if he buys this," the artist tells Billboard.com.

As for the sessions with Diagram and Moline, Black reveals with a chuckle, "I just sang some lyrics into a microphone and said, 'See you later,' and then they went nuts. It's this sort of freeform, not jazzy, but kind of new-age-y weirdo thing. It's not really like a new record. It's more like an experiment."

Sometime next year, spinART is expected to unleash "Honeycomb," a record Black made in Nashville with a host of noted session musicians. The artist describes it as simply "a very mellow album." He says he can't recall whether he unveiled any of the material at a March acoustic show in San Francisco, but that the set features "all brand new songs."

Black's last solo release was 2003's "Show Me Your Tears," recorded with longtime backing band the Catholics. Asked if he's interested in resuming that collaboration at some point, he said, "Yeah, I suppose. I haven't even thought about it."

The Pixies begin an extensive North American swing Sept. 4 in Bend, Ore., with dates booked into December.

Don't you mean "he's seeing other bands at the moment"? Maybe it's not a breakup, just some time apart--you know...

It's kinda' funny, I don't think he means that they're broken up, just that he's seeing what happens.

I have no source. And little to no patience left waiting for some fresh Catholics (my favorite kind). Just having some fun before nap time. Nighty night.

A reliable source tells me that Frank's new album will include the lyric "I have heard rumours whispered on the winds and carried in the streams " and that the CD liner notes will credit Dean for co-writing the yet-to-be-titled song.

(Just kidding, people.)

I've Been Tired is track 12, and Break My Body is track 13. Otherwise, the track listing looks correct.

Hee hee, I mean that he's not stopping with the solo stuff. This new project is not a Pixies one...

No way! You mean, like, Frank's not retiring after Honeycomb is released? He's gonna keep on playing music instead of starting working on real estate? Can't believe it!

(Just kidding. I just find your rumour a bit funny)

I have heard rumours whispered on the winds and carried in the streams about some brand new FB material to come after Honeycomb. I can't say what, as I don't know... this is, in fact, all I do know, but it comes from a very reliable source.

I speculate however, or was led to believe this new material was not, in fact, Pixies material, but another FB project. Catholics? Solo? I don't know. The end is not nigh, though, I don't think...

Just had an email from SpinArt...the date is no longer tentative!

No Catholics on this record it looks like, though...hafta wait a while longer for them to record some new stuff...

Frank Black Francis 2-CD Release Date: October 12

We'll let Pixies and Frank Black & the Catholics frontman speak for himself on this one.

"Sometime back in 1986 I think, the producer for what would become the Pixies first record, Gary Smith, asked me to drop by his apartment in the Allston section of Boston, just down the street from the building I was born in, to play some songs into his cassette walkman. He and the band were scheduled to go into Gary’s studio, the original Fort Apache in the Roxbury section of Boston, the following day to record "Come On Pilgrim", although it did not have a title at that time. Gary wanted to have some audio notes on the songs for the session. We were both excited about the session, to take place over three days; my father had given me the 1000.00 dollars to pay for it. One of the cd’s in this package is that tape. A few years ago a couple of record companies had expressed interest in releasing the tape, kind of a time capsule thing, and I signed some papers.

The project sat around for a couple of years, mostly because my manager, Ken Goes, and I always felt a little uncomfortable about releasing only that tape to the buying public, as it was not a planned performance, a little casual, and very bootleg in sonic quality. Sure, the uberfans would be happy enough about the content, but we both felt that a potential new fan might feel a bit ripped-off. Ken suggested I re-record some of the old repertoire in some new way, especially a well recorded way, so as to balance this product out a bit. I realize some fans or critics might feel like I’m messing with the gospel here, but really these are the reasons for all these recordings here and now.

I first met the Two Pale Boys, Andy and Keith, at a gig some years ago in West Hollywood, the trumpet and guitar members of that trio formed with David Thomas. When David asked me to perform at UCLA as part of his Mirror Man improv-opera in early 2003, Andy and Keith were in the band again, and I asked them to come down on their one day off to record with the Catholics on Show Me Your Tears. The two pale fellows from England offered their studio and input on some undefined project in the undefined future. In the hot summer of 2003, July I think, I went down to the Hackney section of London and belted out the numbers and let the boys do their thing. Those sessions represent the other cd. I enjoy their work, with me or with others. I like these guys a lot. Sure, we’ve messed with the gospel, but I am satisfied with it. "

I think it's also still okay to make fun of midgets. Your point is taken, though. What does Frank's weight have to do with anything? It's his baldness that makes him suck!

Just kidding, of course. Besides, how can a voice sound fat?

For real? These are self-professed fans of Courtney Love? And they have the balls to put down Charles?

On another note, I am so tired of people making fun of his weight. I guess it's true -- fat folks are the one group that "it's OK" to make fun of. It's gross how some people who know better than to poke fun of someone's race or religion feel free to make stupid comments about fat people's size.

One of the threads on the CL board? You'll have to register to view them directly, so I'll summarize with a few choice quotes. These are from the last few days or so, I'm too lazy to look back further than that. First, picture a bunch of posts proclaiming Bam Thwok is like, OMG, liek the best pixies song eva!!1!1! Here's a few direct ones re: Aint That Pretty that I found particularly amusing:

"i think it's a bad idea. i thought the reason kim deal and frank black started side bands and solo careers was so they could suck without spoiling the pixies."

"this is really rude and shallow but frank's vocals sounds really fat and middle aged. haha"

Ahem. To be fair, though, there are plenty of people on there who love the band for what it is.

They're all hoping and praying the new album will be all Kim, all the time. Hard to imagine, I know. I think it must be all the drugs theyre doing, heh.

If it's not much trouble to dig up, could you post a link to one of those threads? I'd love to read that!

We got bilked out of the Catholic U.S. tour. Did'nt someone ask him about U.S. dates in the "Holds Court" post and he said something about it happening "later". Yes I'm still holding on to any shred of hope! I'm pissed because when I discovered the Catholics was right before all this Pixie ballyhoo. I love'm just as much as anyone but FB and the C's just sound a little more mature to me. Meanwhile, I'll be waitin'.

Too much Charles? Have they listened to any Pixies songs other than "Gigantic," "Silver," and "Into The White"?

OK, I was surprised to read that, figuring that the person who wrote it was, like most people on the forum, a guy. Figures that another woman would share my opinion. Waaaaay too much Kim in the new material. Waaaaaay too much. Which I know makes a lot of the guys happy, but Kim's not the reason I got into the Pixies, people.
