From Billboard.com
Black Re-Interprets Pixies, Gets Mellow In Nashville Amid the Pixies' wildly successful reunion tour, vocalist/guitarist Frank Black has found time to prep two new albums, including a double-disc set. Tentatively due Oct. 12 via spinART is "Frank Black Francis," the first disc of which features his pre-Pixies demos, while the second disc sports new recordings of more than a dozen Pixies songs with Two Pale Boys' Andy Diagram and Keith Moline.
Among the cuts featured on the second disc are reinterpretations of the Pixies' "Cactus," "Into the White," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "The Holiday Song" and "Caribou."
Black says the re-recordings stemmed from his desire to augment the demo material, which is of substandard audio fidelity, but has been in high demand for commercial release for years. "I did them to balance out the sh*ttiness of this little time capsule piece, so that Joe Blow, who may not know who the heck I am or who the Pixies are, wouldn't feel completely ripped off if he buys this," the artist tells Billboard.com.
As for the sessions with Diagram and Moline, Black reveals with a chuckle, "I just sang some lyrics into a microphone and said, 'See you later,' and then they went nuts. It's this sort of freeform, not jazzy, but kind of new-age-y weirdo thing. It's not really like a new record. It's more like an experiment."
Sometime next year, spinART is expected to unleash "Honeycomb," a record Black made in Nashville with a host of noted session musicians. The artist describes it as simply "a very mellow album." He says he can't recall whether he unveiled any of the material at a March acoustic show in San Francisco, but that the set features "all brand new songs."
Black's last solo release was 2003's "Show Me Your Tears," recorded with longtime backing band the Catholics. Asked if he's interested in resuming that collaboration at some point, he said, "Yeah, I suppose. I haven't even thought about it."
The Pixies begin an extensive North American swing Sept. 4 in Bend, Ore., with dates booked into December.

Cool article. I wonder if the Catholics will ever be the same now that so many people have been exposed to the Pixies, but damned if I don't want to hear some live Catholic songs again.

I like the Catholics just as anyone, but I think there's a note of uncertainty there that doesn't necessarily mean the Catholics will rise again, so to speak.
At this point, I kind of like the idea of the Catholics being like FB's own private Crazy Horse. Reunited once in a while, but leaving FB with enough latitude to explore other options. Lord knows he's prolific enough.
One of the great things about a long-lived, seldom-mentioned band called The Fall---which FB has mentioned before---is that its lineup is ever changing and evolving. MES has a nasty tendency to sack band members left and right---the old joke is that if it's your granny on the bongos and Mark E. Smith, then it's the fall---but it's also enabled him to survive as a viable "musician" for almost three decades. Always different yet always the same: that's The Fall. And I think FB occupies this unique pantheon, with or without the Catholics, as much as I like them. |

I find it odd that he apparently hadn't thought about working with the Catholics again, though.

When the tour ends he's going to hit the ground running in about 5-18 different directions so I don't think he's snubbing the Catholics, it was just an off the cuff statement of fact. I can't get music out of this old computer so I hope he just releases everything. I'll buy it even if he's following his muse into a ditch. |

Sorry, totally off-topic: there's a French cartoonist called Luz who wrote a book about The Fall, called "The Joke", and it's one of the funniest cartoons I've ever read. Mark E Smith is here:

And if you understand a bit of French, here's a 7-pages tale of a London gig by The Fall:

Like The Catholics are going to change, I don't think so. Frank doesn't seem like the guy that would let fame get to his head anymore. I can't wait for the Pixies album coming 2005 ~*crosses fingers*~ and new Catholics.

Not that I think he'd change the Catholics, just that the venues might not be quite so cozy...

The line-up has already changed a few times, though. The only truly consistent thing about the releases done under the name "Frank Black and the Catholics" seems to be the recording method.

And Scott and Dave.
I interpret Frank's "I haven't thought about it" as another one of his "I don't think that far ahead" type of statements. He's made similar statements about this New Pixies Album that a lot of you folks seem to have decided already exists on a secret tape in a closet somewhere.
He's worked so well with the Catholics for so long that I can't imagine he won't be working with at least some of them in some way in the future. See Eric Drew Feldman and Lyle Workman showing up again to play with Frank in the past few years. |

I remember the show, he played 4 songs on the Honeycomb list of songs (might not have all made the final cut as I've sen several iterations of the track list). |

I want cozy! I want the Catholics!
While I'm psyched to be seeing the Pixies (3 times!) this fall, I don't relish doing so in a big arena and I cannot wait to see the Catholics in concert and to hear new stuff from them and Frank.

Yeah, he sounds pretty ambivilant, but I don't think that is a bad thing or a good thing. Just a thing. At least the "I suppose so" part is semi-positive.
Soon, I am going to become a banshee in the night screaming "Catholics! Cathoooolicsss!"

I talked with Rich Gilbert last Wednesday in SF where he was performing with Tanya Donelly. (great show - details when I recover from the roadtrip.) When I asked him what was up with the Catholics he referred to them as on "hiatus". Like a baby moron I failed to follow up on that so I just took him at his word. Given that he said it in very casual conversation, I don't think too much should be made of it. My guess is that everything is up in the air but that as far as he knows we've not heard the last of the Catholics. He said he hadn't caught any of the Pixies shows but thought he would this fall.
He really is a great guy, personable as well as highly intelligent. I also asked him what he thought of Duane Allman, because I caught a definite 20 second Allman sequence on Hermaphroditos from one of those Lowlands Festival FM broadcasts a few years ago. Turns out he's a big Allman fan and didn't deny there could well have been such a tip'o'hat to Duane. |

Eat a Peach, what an album, Erebus. Do you know what it refers to? I can tell you in exchange for your great post. How cool to hang with Rich Gilbert. He just oozes coolness and, as you say, intelligence.
God, I feel so neurotic. I am practically wringing my hands, worrying that the Catholics are no more.

Kathryn, regarding Eat A Peach, I think I read long, long ago that it refers to the fact (or factoid) that Duane was killed when his motorcycle struck a peach truck that had made a left-hand turn in front of him. The album came out after that, titled with what I guess has to be the bitterest irony. Is that what you heard about the title? |

OK, I was surprised to read that, figuring that the person who wrote it was, like most people on the forum, a guy. Figures that another woman would share my opinion. Waaaaay too much Kim in the new material. Waaaaaay too much. Which I know makes a lot of the guys happy, but Kim's not the reason I got into the Pixies, people.

I think women are certainly in the minority on this board, I know that's been discussed before. Its funny, once in a while I post over on what used to be Courtney Love's message board. Its full of old riot grrrrls and teenagers who think they're hardcore. All the women over there absolutely love the Pixies, but think the new songs have too much Charles! They're all hoping and praying the new album will be all Kim, all the time. Hard to imagine, I know. I think it must be all the drugs theyre doing, heh. |

We got bilked out of the Catholic U.S. tour. Did'nt someone ask him about U.S. dates in the "Holds Court" post and he said something about it happening "later". Yes I'm still holding on to any shred of hope! I'm pissed because when I discovered the Catholics was right before all this Pixie ballyhoo. I love'm just as much as anyone but FB and the C's just sound a little more mature to me. Meanwhile, I'll be waitin'. |

One of the threads on the CL board? You'll have to register to view them directly, so I'll summarize with a few choice quotes. These are from the last few days or so, I'm too lazy to look back further than that. First, picture a bunch of posts proclaiming Bam Thwok is like, OMG, liek the best pixies song eva!!1!1! Here's a few direct ones re: Aint That Pretty that I found particularly amusing:
"i think it's a bad idea. i thought the reason kim deal and frank black started side bands and solo careers was so they could suck without spoiling the pixies."
"this is really rude and shallow but frank's vocals sounds really fat and middle aged. haha"
Ahem. To be fair, though, there are plenty of people on there who love the band for what it is.

For real? These are self-professed fans of Courtney Love? And they have the balls to put down Charles?
On another note, I am so tired of people making fun of his weight. I guess it's true -- fat folks are the one group that "it's OK" to make fun of. It's gross how some people who know better than to poke fun of someone's race or religion feel free to make stupid comments about fat people's size.

I think it's also still okay to make fun of midgets. Your point is taken, though. What does Frank's weight have to do with anything? It's his baldness that makes him suck!
Just kidding, of course. Besides, how can a voice sound fat?
