Now that The Golem and NSE have both been digested i have to say that The Golem really is the gift that keeps giving. I have pretty much discarded NSE unfortunately, but The Golem gets spun (no spin /digitally) on nearly a daily basis.
I have come to accept that NSE is just not my cup of tea and I’ll wait for the next release hoping that will be of my taste. However with The Golem I have come to appreciate all its minute little quirks, the ethereal interludes and those excellent bits where all the build up climaxes into a mix of great guitar, vocals, horns, drums etc.
It is a great record and one i wish was released to the masses with the same level of PR/Marketing as NSE. I mean there was quite a lot of press regarding NSE. Even in Ireland we had reviews for the NSE record in nearly all major national publications. But the not many people get to hear i.m.o, the coolest record of the year so far.
The Golem has elements of all my favourite FB records encapsulated within it. E.G, the opening credits tune has a great creepy start which builds to that funky horn section, this has the FB self titled J.Linnel / K Hoffman grooves. It then dissipates into that sweeping guitar line, which gives a slight breather before bad news kicks in. That little guitar bit evokes what i find only FB/BF can do. It’s a detached cinematic break where you can consider the great grooves that have just passed and anticipate the next one.
I'm not going to go into every song, but the breadth of variety on this record is amazing. from a song like the Conjuring with its weird harpsichord start and frenetic finish to Custom all the way which is a real slow burner full of lush instrumentation. This record is a 10/10 in my book. Well done Black Francis and band. I hope the rock edit version is released soon (with minimal edit).
Please discuss, how would you rate this record upagainst the back catalouge?

April 17 isn't Record Store Day, but it is the week of Record Store Day. This is pure armchair/peanut gallery speculation, but it wouldn't surprise me if this ends up being a Record Store Day release.

I HOPE it isn't, as that'll mean more hassle to get it, but if it is, I'll set the alarm for early in the morning and manage.

On the other hand, maybe it won't be. Just throwin' that out there.

The Bureau Records
we're gonna be reissuing BLACK FRANCIS' THE GOLEM (the one hour long epic rock opera - rock album version) on a double VINYL LP (with digital download, of course). April 17.

Some songs are slightly shorter (they edited the outros mostly) but basically they're the same. I'd say the mixing is the same.

if i send you the rock edit tracks (you do have the full score, right?), do you want to look into this?

or has someone else already done this exercise?

Are the tracks on the rock edit disc taken directly from the original score (and could therefore be assembled in itunes for example)?

Or is there any difference in the recordings/mixing?

And if they're going give scores in the tenths why not make the scale 0 to 100.

Thanks Carl. Rating 6.4 out of what? From what he was saying in the review, if it was 6.4/10 that seems quite low.

Bonjour tous :)

So the box set included sheet music for the whole film right? Did anyone end up posting any of that on this site??
TAMAL Posted - 11/08/2010 : 02:03:05
Finally watched the Golem tonight and I loved it! Wow what a different sound BF has made with this one.
Fave part: When the Golem picks up the little girl and she takes the star from his chest. The song playing feels so perfect during that scene... love it.

I am sure the DVD is Region 0. It plays on my machine anyway.

Same here, I'm not a big fan of little stars.
PAM-PAM-PAM-PAM-PAM PAM PAM
-who's knocking?
But I absolutely love the acoustic versions at the end.
About Makanujo, I like it much better here at the very begining.
I used to see it as a poorer version of Test Pilot Blues, now it has a life of its own (even if it's just a pre dinner cracker)

Also got mine today. The packaging, like Grotesque said, is very simple, nothing fancy.

Haven't listened to this tracklist enough times so that I don't catch myself expecting 'The Maharal' right after 'Astaroth', for example. Maybe with a couple more listens I'll agree with Grotesque that this tracklist flows perfectly.

Still, for a shortened version of the whole thing, it works pretty well, all the radio hits are there, and they keep coming one after another, maybe the best thing about this shortened version is that it really shows how strong this body of songs really is. They could have taken two or three songs out to make it a more leaner, meaner fighting machine ('Makanujo' is still crappy, 'Little Stars Theme' and both reprises don't add much to this album), but that's just my personal taste, of course.

Look, I can't tell you if there are some significant cuts inside the songs, I just say the general feeling is much more fluent and I'm very happy with it, I listen to it all the time like a new record. I used to listen to the golem long version in blackfrancis.net and this is quite a different experience (but maybe I'm just a FB geek you know). Listening to the entire golem use to be an enhausting thing, in many cases I felt asleep, this one flows perfectly - you couldnt tell it's 60 minutes long, more like 45.
Maybe if you already have the golem box you wont care about the pack that is coming for November 16th (rock edit + film) because you already have the film, so the rock edit alone can be a good compromise.
But hey, it's not precisely a beautiful object: it's a bit like the seven fingers box with an inner sleeve.
Anyway it's really great this version finally came out, its makes much more sense as a FB album and it's definitly a classic, a top 5.

Recieved and listened to my golem, it s just great, the real thing. The edit is perfect, you dont have that loose impresion anymore, it s just a perfect concept album now, and better than bluefinger. I m surprised the edited version of makanujo (without the guitar chords at the begining) works so well as an opener.
The package is not super beautrifull but it s ok, with a sleeve inside with printed lyrics. Really worth the 12 $

"November 16th" ? It's already there in the site.
"The CD comes with a DVD" ? It's 2 diferent things now.

That seem to be a third golem version. CD rock version plus DVD out in real stores for November 16th with decent media buzz?

That would be great news for that great record.

Ordered it today, let's see how much time it takes to reach Buenos Aires.
I'm kinda sad the golem finally had much less attention than Nonstoperotik in the general medias. A lot of people could dig it as a rock album, but it seems it will stand as another obscure release like Christmass, Oddballs or even SSMVGD (all good albums by the way).
It would be hard to bring back the attention on The Golem for this "non-collector" release (I dont even know if I can call it "official"), mainly because it's already seen as an old record.
MajorKey Posted - 09/25/2010 : 22:15:06
Got my 'rock edit' today. I don't notice anything different about the songs/mixes other than The Obedient Servant and The Word (reprise) both run 20-25 seconds shorter. This probably isn't an essential purchase if you already have the full version.

The store currently shows 358 copies left in stock. Is this another limited edition or will they stock more when these run out? This is one of his best albums and it would be a shame if so few copies exist.
Grotesque Posted - 09/16/2010 : 06:14:17
Yes!
The golem rock edit! At last!
Original Golem was so good but sooooooo long.
I'll order it at once but I'm already sure this is the best "Black Francis" record yet.
