Posted - 05/02/2010 : 11:57:49 i just like the variety of NSE. similar to SMYT and TOTY, and DiTS to an extent. Golem is super duper, but NSE is super-dee-duper.

Posted - 05/02/2010 : 05:25:02 I'm with you Don. Golem is fantastic, but there's a lot to digest there and it's so atmospheric that I need to be in the right mood for it. NSE is suitably weird, but I think weird Frank has been there all along. Even FMRM is pretty damn weird. But I think I know what you mean. I think the quirky oddness has been back since Bluefinger though.

Posted - 05/02/2010 : 02:08:29 It looks like I'm in the minority, but I'm launching a vote for NSE! For me its a return to weird Frank Black. I reckon it'll have more staying power than The Golem (and I love the Golem) |

Posted - 05/01/2010 : 03:40:00 OK, here are my belated comments on this topic (it took me forever to receive NSE from the Bureau...).
The Golem wins, no doubt about it. I did not have great expectations, thinking this would be some kind of cryptic, inaccessible artsy experiment but no, this is GREAT MUSIC, period. A great sense of unity throughout, excellent musical direction, strange but evocative atmosphere, many great songs... this set is a classic for me.
For NSE I had greater expectations then... nothing. I can't find much excitation throughout the album, a kind of rag tag collection of good songs with very little zest. DMC is not as good as I wanted it to be, although the orchestration is original. I don't know, I guess I am just disappointed. Maybe time will fix that like it id for other FB stuff in the past. We'll see, but for now, the GOLEM RULES.

so should i get it?

There are some songs that fit that description such as electric full band Gyaneshwar, Get Away Oil, Burnt Out Rock and Roll, and All Around the World. And the ones that are playing like they are on the record all seriously rock, that was one hell of a three peice band, too bad I couldnt see that tour.

i like how NSE is short because i get to keep playing it over and over, reliving each fantastic moment of each song. i like how the Golem is long because after 10 hours of doing yard work/ playing with the lad it still isn't over.

Posted - 04/16/2010 : 07:20:40 I think after a few weeks of listening I'm going to have to switch to team Erotik. But hot damn, every Black Francis release has been excellent so excellent - Christmass (half counts because some of the songs are accredited to Black Francis), Bluefinger, Svn Fingers, Nijmegen (sp?), Golem, NSE - exciting times.

Posted - 04/16/2010 : 02:40:24 up to this point i have labeled all BF releases as Frank Black, just to keep all the music together on my iPod. now, however, i have put all Black Francis in its own category. the past few years have seen one amazing release after another from this guy (not that that's unusual). i've been on a real Black Francis kick. obviously the 2 new albums contribute to that, but b-sides, live shows (utah saloon arrived in the mail yesterday!), and the FiNGeRS- i can't get enough.

I'd agree with you there. Probably a demo. Just a step up from that 'Alabaster' song that was on bf.net a while back. |

I agree that its a great track, but more of a b-side than an album closer. I think B-sides typically get held in greater regard than songs merit, because there are lower expectations causing the listener to get over-excited when the songs turn out to be good. Not saying that the songs arent good - i really like ghost coming - i'm just saying they get over valued, and its something i do as well. An example of this is SSMVGD, i think its really cool and mostly think "aw this song should've been released!", but I realized if it was an actual album it'd probably be one of my least favourite Frank Black albums - it gets elevated by being unreleased. That's my take anyways.

Posted - 04/13/2010 : 11:21:29 Just a whole load more songs for the collection. iTunes isn't my favorite way of playing music, but it sure makes it easier to jump tracks. I got more Frank songs than any other artist. Well I'll be damned.

Posted - 04/13/2010 : 03:35:06 Gotta go with Golem, I think. Sure, I skip nearly all of the interludes and reprises, but "You're Gonna Pay" is getting more listens than anything on NSE.
THE NSE thread has a post early on where the tracklist was exactly reversed. Wasn't that tracklist released by Frank? Anyone tried listening to it that way?
Ghost Coming would make a nice closer. Btw, does anyone have any idea why I always expect to hear a giggle at the end of Cinema Star? It's like I've heard that ending before (with the swelling strings) and in that song a girl giggles.

Posted - 04/12/2010 : 21:21:14 When I Go Down should have been the closer indeed. Since I heard The Golem twenty spins more than NSE, my choice in this battle is that little beast.

Weird. That's what I sorta did. I moved Ghost Coming into the open track 12 spot. A great closer in my opinion, like Dog in the Sand.

Grotesque |
Posted - 04/09/2010 : 22:40:12 Ouch! Erotik is being beaten up ruthlessly by the strong Golem (it's true that Golem is 11 songs heavier, maybe they just dont belong to the same category). But remember Golem was on the ring first. Personaly I think it's like Beatles (Golem) vs Kinks (Erotik). Beatles/Golem reach to a greater body of work (more good songs) but Kinks/Erotik have the true gems. Now I can say I dont like NSE tracks order. I made a new one for me, and I appreciate it much better that way:
1 Rabbits 2 Dead Man's Curve 3 Corrina 4 Wheels 5 6 Legged man 6 Wild Son 7 Nonstoperotik 8 Cinema Star 9 O my tidy sum 10 Lake of sin 11 When I go down
Tell me if it's not better that way!!!
