Two Albums and a Podcast

We at FrankBlack.Net are always looking for new ways to spread the word to new listeners and also give more 'experienced' fans something new, something we like to call spreading the love. Seems that Valentine's Day is an appropriate time, so we've been working tirelessly to put together a gift we hope will do just that - the FrankBlack.Net Podcast. Coming in at just over an hour, our debut podcast features some live goodies, rare b-sides, underrated album tracks, and a previously unreleased song we think you'll be excited about. The program, for the moment, is a new podcast monthly (or sooner), and with new features each time. It's free, it's legal (thanks Frank, Ken, and labels), and it's here now!

In much bigger news, completely unannounced, well sort of (Frank stopped by almost a year ago to date to announce their existence and tracklist), a two-disc compilation of Frank Black & The Catholics b-sides is now available on iTunes. There is no physical version of these albums planned, but they are expected to find their way onto CD sooner or later.

The first disc is called One More Road For The Hit and contains songs from Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day, the Show Me Your Tears single, and also a song done for the Powerpuff Girls' movie, "Pray For The Girls".

The second is called Snake Oil, and contains covers (such as Springsteen's "I'm Going Down"), more tracks from singles, and two never-before released b-sides, "Some Things" and "Belle Isle".

The decision to release these on iTunes came after Tunecore approached Frank Black and asked him to release the compilation as a way of kicking off their new service. Owned by SpinArt's Jeff Price, its goal is to help artists who otherwise can't get on iTunes (i.e. without a label) to access the service. While Frank has no problem getting his stuff on iTunes, he did want to support the initiative, and voila - an iTunes release.

Finally, it has been noted by many followers that these b-side discs were expected on an upcoming Frank Black & The Catholics Boxset. While the boxset hasn't been cancelled, its future is currently unknown. There is, after all, a lot more in the archives we've never heard, and surely a a lot of fans would like to see a physical manifestation of these CDs whether in a boxset or not.

Yeah it's a shame they're iTunes only, they should get them on to eMusic as well :-)

I've just seen the news on the front page. Too bad there are not yet cds and that's only available on ITunes... Nevertheless, it' a great idea.

thanx Dean, don't worry about the "chit chat", it's interesting, and it's not "too much".

Cassandra - well, the idea grew from there into what it is now, but if someone does do a coverr, just use the Salon. The salon will play greatly in the small portion of content we pull from the fb.net community.

Velvety - thanks. We're trying to mix between giving hardcore fans new/unheard stuff and giving new fans more exposure to fb's works. We want the Pixies fans or people with one or two albums to give it a listen and hear some other Frank stuff they should be checking out. But for my own personal tastes, I agree with you. I think we had a good balance in number one, but we're going to be playing with that as we go so by all means let us know if you think otherwise now or ever. Glad you like the chit chat, I was a little worried it was going to be too much.

My only suggestion for the next one is that, when in doubt between an "officialy" realeased song and a live version, outake, obscure b-side or just talking about Frank-related music and/or stories, you choose the latter options. Most people listening to the podcast are probably hardcore FB fans, they know the album versions of the songs. So, if you think you can keep up with monthly podcasts with few album versions of Frank songs, please do so.

Also, the chit chat part of the podcast, talking about Frank's music, what the person feels about a particular album/track/solo, etc, shouldn't be cut down. It's really great to hear rare stuff from Frank, but hearing fans talk about what their favourites are, why someone thinks this song is underapreciated or that song is not so good, etc, is also very interesting. Particularly if you can get a debate started between two, three, four people... I guess I'm trying to say that these podcasts shouldn't necessarily focus on hearing as much rare songs and live versions of Frank's music as possible.

Again, great idea and congratulations for this first podcast. I'm really looking forward to the next one.
cassandra is Posted - 02/15/2006 : 09:28:50
Well, that's a good alternative, with lots of other possibilities. Great idea! So how is it gonna work if someone wants to submit a cover of Frank or the Pixies?

Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 02/15/2006 : 09:16:57
Actually, that was where the idea came from for the podcast - I wanted a different way of doing tributes/other stuff.

I agree with Peter Radiator about the fact of "having people record and submit new covers to the Podcasts might be a great alternative to more full-length tribute albums..."

"Keeping it tightly structured will give the Podcasts added strength and they'll hold up more to repeated listening."

I agree with that.

About other arts forms I agree with Bartholomew and Kelladwella that the most important is that these things should be related to Frank music in a way or another.

Don't worry, it wouldn't be more than one per podcast, we don't want to dilute it either. :) I think because we're all on the forum inspired by FB whether we like it or not, so that connection to the man is there in FB.Net art regardless of whether it comes right out and says it. Obviously we'll be picking stuff where we can see and discuss the influence over stuff that we don't think most people here will like. If we don't find anything, we won't put anything...

Really appreciate the feedback, this is all very helpful for planning #2 (which we've already started on). Please keep it coming.

By the way, if the powers that be choose to persue it, my website is: www.patokabrown.com The writing featured on the site is literary fiction, it's a free novella to be exact.

Bartholomew Posted - 02/15/2006 : 08:23:16
I agree kelladwella, about keeping the broadcast of art limited to FB related. I was only suggesting a quick FB members promotion area. Just basically giving out the web addresses for anyone interested. Kinda like they do at the end of the dawn and drew show.
peter radiator Posted - 02/15/2006 : 08:19:48
I agree that it's an interesting idea to feature FB.net members' own music that they feel has been strongly influenced by Frank's, and I'm sure I'd love to hear some of my stuff on there (!), but I can't help but feel that more than one song of that kind per podcast would only serve to dilute the real impact of what you've got going.

There are plenty of way for all of us out here to promote our own stuff, especially on that section of this site that's devoted to that.

I really enjoyed the Podcast, and look forward to the next one, but I'd much rather hear Frank Black tunes, Pixies material, rare tracks/live versions, FB.net member-submitted covers, and good-natured banter, in that order of importance.

In fact, having people record and submit new covers to the Podcasts might be a great alternative to more full-length tribute albums...

Keeping it tightly structured will give the Podcasts added strength and they'll hold up more to repeated listening.

Thanks again for the tremendous efforts, and keep up the great work!

And I absolutely LOVED the two songs you included from the tribute albums.

Somehow I never came around checking these out. I guess it has something to do with my reservations on fan art in general.
What a mistake it was in this case!

So thanks for that.

Every two weeks a half an hour podcast sounds pretty good to me. You wouldn't have to wait so long for the next one.

It was fun to listen to the first episode. As for the new song ... I think it deserves the chance to grow on me a little more.

Please try and keep things focused on FB and his music (like you did). If you choose to include "other art" like short stories or poems, etc. it should have a connection to Frank, I think.

Oh, and since you asked I subscribed the podcast via iTunes.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 02/15/2006 : 07:51:17
Yeah, I'd certainly be happy to entertain any art we can ostensibly preview over audio. If we had a reading of a (quite) short story I think we'd consider putting it in. As for the other ideas, I like 'em all, and we actually mentioned doing the last one in our podcast by having a member come on and tell us a story about the man.

Are you in the Salon? If so, I'll be digging around there soon for subsequent podcasts. A weekly show we'd not be able to keep up (or offer exclusive stuff all the time) but we're considering bi-monthly half hour ish.

Thanks for your input.

nice stuff...
something new to listen to, if only for an hour a month...
tis good...
Bartholomew Posted - 02/15/2006 : 07:35:21
Very good job on the podcast, guys. I vote for a fifteen minute weekly show, but no matter what you decide I'll be listening. It's especially cool to hear some obscure stuff I've never heard like the Black Sessions stuff. Uber cool to hear a new song from Fastman Raiderman. Suggestions: How about a Frank Black "trivia question", or a "little known facts" or "interesting story" section about the man. Good idea on the promoting other FB.net members music –– how about promoting other art, aside from music in addition? Personally, I have a web page with my e-book on it and a podcast (of the same book) of my own...What do you think? Keep up the great work, guys.

I can now. I've been wanting to hear Dean's accent with all the recent "eh?" posts,
the "aboots" had me thinking he's half Scottish!

Heh, that's just my Frank Black filter I've got set up so I can pretend to be FB and have an interview next episode. Well, no, but thanks anyway - I guess noone likes their voice.

Dean: So, Frank, fans are dying to know, where's your favourite place to play?
Dean (as FB): Well, Dean, that's tough. I mean, France is cool, but Saskatoon has a berry named after it.
etc...

I don't think I sound anything like FB, but I wish I did! My singing career would do much better.
