Pixies singer Frank Black ... has a handsome son named Jack, and Frank was bouncing the four-month-old tyke on his knee while he delivered this bit of news to the Smoking Section: For the Pixies' summer tour, he was thinking of playing two sets a night, one featuring a handful of deep old cuts. "The promoter [in Portland, Oregon] made all these posters - EARLY SHOW: B SIDES AND RARITIES!" says Black. "So now I'm roped into it. I'm sitting around listeing to our B sides going, 'Man, these songs suck!' " No word on the plan for other cities on the tour, but what doesn't suck is Black's upcoming solo album, Honeycomb, cut with legends like Stax guitarist Steve Cropper and Muscle Shoals bassist David Hood. "I want to tour with those guys," says Black. "But I'm competing for players with Booker T. and MG's and Neil Young."

Posted - 06/16/2005 : 06:19:13 i would lvoe to see some B-sides too but as someone else said, there are a reaosn why they are b-sides. Although I love the b-sides, i still would probably prefer to hear album songs.

Posted - 06/08/2005 : 16:46:01 I think Frank is his own worst critic. Still, I can see why he wouldn't want to do a show of ONLY B-sides and rarities. On the other hand, the "greatest hits only" setlists of last year's Pixies shows could have used the occasional rarity.

It's from the video game "Narc" Hence the title! I think Frank explains it in the Complete B-Sides liner notes. |

And Mosh, Don't Pass the Guy is a better instrumental, IMO ;)

Posted - 06/07/2005 : 16:46:07 I would like to know what b-sides was he refering to. 'cause c'mon EVERY goddamn b-side phuking rule!!! Maybe it's just me who likes them so much because my first pixies record was "the b-side file 3rd edition" and I just fell in love with it. Funny because it is a post-pixies record and it also is a bootleg |

Posted - 06/07/2005 : 01:50:47 actually, i would. it seems like a song that was written in minutes. but still brilliant.

Posted - 06/07/2005 : 01:39:26 yeah they could be non b-sides but some would be fillers, no that's harsh....some would be like songs off catholic records. i'd rather they be included just so we can hear them. i wanna hear all frank's songs but just because they are fb/pixie songs doesn't automatically make them great. and i don't think frank judges (wrong word i know) his songs the way we do.
Dancing the Manta ray is a brilliant song full stop, so i wouldn't group that with my 'some of these songs' list

but they're so fucking good they could be non-b-sides.
i remember when Frank started playing Pixies songs again, he used to play Dancing The Manta Ray sometimes.. there's some acoustic interview thing where he plays it, and before he does he says something like, "this kind of represents what Pixies songs were all about. it's a simple song".. and then busted into this fucking great version of it. i think the fact that he chose to cover this, at that stage, shows that (at least with that song, he thought there was something worthwhile there.
i think he's just being silly |

Posted - 06/06/2005 : 21:03:37 We at least know that he likes "Dancing the Manta Ray". He played that with the Catholics and, in recent years, played it solo. He's got good taste. I think that's the best Pixies b-side.
If there's a live (in concert) disc in the Catholics box set, "Danncing the Manta Ray" needs to be on it. I have a Catholics version of that on MP3 that is a total rock monster. |

That would have been amazing. I was thinking about 'Born In Chicago' as an opener. If only we could write the setlists, i'd be in Pixie heaven for one night.

Posted - 06/06/2005 : 12:47:10 Thanks for posting this!
I gotta say, I was glad that the early show we went to wasn't just B-sides and rarities. I was thrilled he played a few, but adding the classics just made it more of a full meal. To play just the B-sides to me....would have been like eating an appetizer for dinner. If I had to guess.... I think the idea was to get people to buy both sets. Totally money hungry promoters, but Frank just isn't like that. Why would he play a teaser show just to get you to go to the late show and spend more money? He cares about the music too much to make such set decisions based on profit. |

Posted - 06/06/2005 : 11:18:56 yeah, I hop you're all right about him being modest, but then again he called such a masterpiece as 'Manta Ray' a 'not so classic quickie', so I don't know what to think. Love the b-sides, though. |

Posted - 06/06/2005 : 07:38:11 These songs belong to his past, he prefers the new album to promote that reflects his state of mind... The B-Sides of the Pixies are really appreciate and even Mojo Magazine wrote that Into The White was one of the best B-Side ever, many others said that their B-Sides were A Sides for any other groups... So the Man is indeed modest. |
