Years ago I read of a FB & C's show that started with Frank solo, then he was slowly joined by the rest of the band except Dave Lovering sat in on drums for a few songs, before Scott came out. I think this may have been in 01 or 02, I don't know.
I think a recording of this exists but I've never heard it.
Does anyone have it and if so, could they post it?

That was a very enjoyable show.
Some thoughts: Fiddle Riddle, a very good version, same with Gouge, Dancing the Manta Ray. Exceptional Dog Gone, very gentle and a good slower tempo.
Interesting to hear Hermphrorditos without the quick fast jam at the end; I love the quick jam, but I also like the slow tempo end, with the song falling apart. They also do that nicely at the end of How You Went So Far and Jane, too.
The intro to I'll Be Blue is good. Solid John the Revelator, not as good as the trio show from Juanita's.
Another gentle version of Dog in the Sand, magnifique!
Just before the two minute mark seems like some of the band is going into a different part of Bad Harmony but they correct it.
Great version of the Holiday Song; I really love the space they give the song, too bad Pixies don't perform it this way. Again, it feels like they're going just a bit off like they did in Bad harmony but it makes for a good listen.
I love the longer intro to Where is My Mind, just repeating those chords while the crowd sings along. The Pixies pixified cover songs, the Catholics Catholicized Pixies songs and now the Pixies need to pixify some Catholics ones.
I always felt that If It Takes All Night should go on longer in the live setting; it's blasting along and then, the abrupt stop. Oh well. Remake starts off great, fast and powerful but seems to surprisingly hit a bit of a bump with the solos; maybe my expectations are too high for this one, I recall being amazed at it when I saw them play it in person. Much like If It Takes All Night, I feel like the song should go on longer and be more unhinged.
The sound quality is pretty good on this; great to hear another FB & the C's show from that era.

Having finished the trio show from Arkansas I gotta say those are great versions of Sister Isabel and John the Revelator. Easily the best John the Revelator I've hard them play.
I think Davey P did a great job in handling the solos and the show just has a riotous energy; well, most Catholics shows did, so, perhaps this one just has more of a focused riot, a contradiction sure, but an enjoyable contradiction.

Info: A solid show from 2001. As usual for the 2001 tour, an extensive setlist played. Sound is very good - one of the best audience recordings of Frank & The Catholics. From reading a couple of reviews, it appears consensus was that the show went on too long for the audience. Quiet mellow song selection in parts, not surprising considering they're touring "Dog In The Sand." Show was a few days after their equipment got stolen, so all playing borrowed/newly bought equipment.
My copy came as part of a very extensive (100+ cd's) collection of Frank Black and Pixies recordings I acquired from a long-time collector. Most of the stuff has not seen much circulation, and I will endeavor to get through some/most of it in time.

I haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet, but what I have heard has been very enjoyable. Great version of Manitoba! It's interesting to hear a show without Rich and Dave McCaffrey.
I know Dave Phillips also solos when Rich is there but it is interesting to hear him alone.
The sound quality is pretty good considering someone just recorded this, from I'm assuming, the audience.
I'm guessing this was a last minute show and Rich Gilbert and the other Dave were unavailable so The Catholics became a power trio.

I seem to remember sometime around the end of the Catholics era but before the Pixies reunion was announced there was a one off show that was Frank, Dave Lovering on drums, Tommy Stinson on bass, Dave Philips on guitar and I think Feldman on piano (I also want to say Joey was involved in some capacity, but I think if Dave and Joey had played with Frank it would be an oft mentioned event. Must be just my dreams). I always really wanted to hear that. My friends and I used to jokingly refer to that lineup as "the New Catholics", disappointing they didn't do more.

Calistan is just Eric Drew Fledman's organ with Frank singing. Dog Gone is Frank solo. Dave P comes out and slides around on End of Miles. The rest of the band joins again during 21 Reasons. Short show because Scott was ill, apparently.
and I do have a few of the higher ground, winooski gigs, so will have a look. definitely got that one from gigposters.com but will have to give it a listen to see if there's any Dave playing.

That would be amazing. I still say they should perform Bullet and let Joey take an extended lead or "lead" where Rich would, after the "minor chord" line.
But there's so many Pixies songs that have yet to be played (Theme from Narc, Velvety, the Happening, Trompe Le Monde, Lovely Day, etc.) it seems incredibly doubtful. Frank even answered this question on here somewhere about not doing this.
It would still be amazing though. Any of his solo stuff...why not Brackish Boy, it was recorded by the Pixies.
I really loved how the Catholics performed Pixies songs, I prefer some of their performances over the Pixies.

9 is quite a lot of Pixies songs for a Catholics concert, with hindsight you could see a tipping point was approaching. Sure would love to hear 9 Catholics songs at a Pixies concert. Highly unlikely prospect though. |

Maybe I'm mis-remembering but this guy had a website with a HUGE list of Frank Black live recordings and this show was one of them; maybe somewhere out there is a recording of this. |

FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS
THE COACH HOUSE, SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA
JULY 19, 2002
The Coach House is a 500-person room stuffed with picnic tables, sandwiched between car dealerships along the Southern California coast. This show was almost to capacity. The 1st opening act was so awful; they’re not worth mentioning. David Lovering (who had been opening for the Breeders in L.A.) followed with his scientific experimentalism show. Frank came onto play an acoustic set, then brought out the Catholics, one by one. He was in a great mood, in great form, very chatty and happy. Among many and chatty stories, he mentioned that he and Dave Phillips played an industry gig in Denver, where they saw the White Stripes play. Frank was very impressed and bought all their cds. Frank introduced Eric Drew Feldman as “Eric Drewfeldman”, whom he met while in “that band that opened for U2”. Frank said that his and Daves’ wives appear in a low-budget film, “The Low-Budget Time Machine” - with Frank and Dave also as zombies (somehow I doubt this) (although Frank is in a new documentary about They Might Be Giants called “Gigantic: A Story of Two Johns”). Also, Frank’s wife calls him “Superchooch”. AND, Frank Black and the Catholics start recording again August 1st. The Catholics’ drummer called in sick... which led the audience to begin screaming for David Lovering to come on and drum... to which Frank played along beautifully, and brought him out for the rest of the set - STUNNING. To the utter disbelief and delight of a packed house, 2 ex-Pixies played Pixies - great PR timing for the newly released “Pixies” demos cd - better PR for Frank and his legacy. It’s been a LONG time since I was so significantly thrilled with a rock show - everyone played brilliantly - and the addition of Lovering doubled the effect - standing ovations, screaming, cameras going off (yes both).
