Posted - 11/19/2006 : 11:41:18 Great show. Ranks up there with Slims show a few years back...a bit better than the DuNord show. (FB's appearance with that comedic songwriter at the comedy venue a few years back was a bad experiment)
-Back-up band pretty good. A little 'thin' sounding next to the Catholics -Drummer (Billy Block) was having a blast, that was cool. -I still think EDF is overrated-lets see some energy fro chrissakes -Western Star was just as good acoustically as electric (Slims)-and is still rare to hear live -I won't even waste font space on Kentucky Prophet (offensive performer, perfect for a frat party) -I would have preferred some more FB tunes over yet another tired rehash of Nimrod. Now that the Pixies reunion brinks truck delivered, FB should'nt feel obligated to perform those tunes.
-just my $.02...

Thanks, all, for the reviews. What do you mean, Erebus, when you say I'll Be Blue is "now a stage heavy"? I've been wondering today how that song sounds when it's a full band sans the piano. It just doesn't seem right to me. The piano is so key to the song.
I could not find my honeycomb.
You'll just have to trust us that it was definitely one of the best songs of the night. I love it both ways. I don't think it sounds like the Catholics version - it's turned into something new: a signature piece for the new band. The rock-out in the middle was more like a wall of sound than a glorified solo segment. |

Maybe you should take it all the way back. You don't know me, and you didn't even read the thread before you posted. But I'm glad you can "tell me so". Thanks, man.
My orginal point was to point out - hopefully to FB's management - that the ticket price was prohibitive.
Saying that the place was 2/3 full is generous. They had to shut down the bar in the back because there wasn't enough business to keep it open.
FB usually sells out his shows in SF - as previously mentioned, even on multiple nights. Even though this was not the Catholics or Pixies, I think the turnout was a little low, and I can't help but think it was partly due to ticket "convenience" charges. |

I agree, this really impressed me. The original isn't a personal favorite, but the version they came out with at the Fillmmore was right up my alley. It actually reminded me of bit of some of the club music in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, although I guess that was really in just the feel it created: deep, slow, and yet very heavy (a great combination!).
Another one that sounded much better live (although in this case I do like the album version quite a bit) was The Swimmer. It felt, again, quite a bit heavier than I expected. |

Posted - 11/16/2006 : 20:25:41 I thought Kentucky Prophet was an interesting act. He was definitely a good performer and had some good jokes, but not someone who I'd pay to see. And I really loved the I Will Be Blue rendition, it was really heavy (and unexpected). |

Along similar lines, I like how Frank has modified Nadine and 666, improving, at least to my ears, material that previously was relatively ordinary by the exhalted Frank standards. Reminds me of how, as much as I liked the original, Robert Onion seemed to come into its own on stage a few years back.
Brackish: I forget just when it was but it was fun to see Frank announce his unexpected “solo” and then hold forth better than well. And to ears back in the middle of the pack, Duane’s lead was fully evident and mixed upfront. Sounded great. But re Kentucky Prophet, though he’s clearly intelligent and does have horse flesh to sell, I found his set in poor taste.

Well, I guess I have nothing new to add. The show was the longest I've seen Frank Black play for sure. The acoustic stuff was awesome. At one point his guitar was hitting the mic stand, then he kept doing it intentionally calling it a "solo." The weird thing is it actually sounded pretty cool. The songs with the band were really good. This must be about the 15th FB show I've seen, and it's the first time I've heard him do 10 Percenter. It rocked for reals.
Didn't the solo rule? lol |

Does this seem completely unreasonable to anyone else? I would love to go to the show, but you have to draw the line somewhere and I think the line has been drawn. The fees have gotten to the point that no matter how much I like the band/team/event, I'm not paying $12.50 extra per ticket for the "convenience" of going.
From what I've read, it doesn't even sound like a full length show. $41 for a 20 song set?
BTW, I've been to probably 15+ FB/FB+TC shows over the years, so this is not an easy decision.
Are you even a Frank fan? Been to 15 shows and can't make up your mind? LOL, did you go as a critic or a fan? I have only seen Frank four times but they were all amazing, and I would never assume that Frank couldn't come up with something new for me. You should like such a self-important joker here.
As a matter of fact, if Frank planned the show to make Jefrey here look like a jackass, he couldn't have done a better job.
Regardless of the convience fee (I think they suck, just like you do), the show was easily worth several times what I payed. From the accoustic beginning to the very last song, Frank was engaged with the crowd, creating an atmosphere where I felt like most everyone enjoyed it. In order to fill the space with as much music as possible, the room for applause between songs was cut down to even less than I would consider the Frank norm, some songs simply seguaing into the next as though they were one song (on one notable occasion he even switched bands - from Frank to Pixies - in such a seamless seguay. I loved it.
At any rate, your post reads like sour grapes, and you should appreciate Frank enough to know that if anyone can make an expensive show worthwhile, it is Frank. $41 isn't even that much.
I hope you enjoyed staying home! |

It was barely 2/3 full if that. Also, the opening act was, uh, not my thing. |

It sounded more or less like the original version of that song, which correct me if I'm wrong, was left off of the first Catholics album and was available on emusic back in the day.

Posted - 11/16/2006 : 15:32:18 Just got home from the show about an hour ago. As the comments have run, a truly fine show, the longest of Frank’s that I’ve seen. So nice to see the new lineup, and was very impressed with Duane Jarvis. He too really seemed to be enjoying himself, to include being openly pleased with Frank’s songs and amused at Frank’s humor. Duane’s quite the note-bender. Frank’s banter was clever and warm. Great the way he included the crowd with Yea California! stuff. After EDF was introduced he said “I want a straight mic stand too” or something like that, so Frank instructed the crew to take note of that. The long acoustic opener was a bonus. Personal faves from the evening were The Water, Western Star, Gyaneshwar (both), I’ll Be Blue (now a stage heavy), Ten Percenter, Johnny Barleycorn, Bullet (always a fave), Nadine, and 666. Given the way My Terrible Ways can slow down the show, I thought it worked well as a show ender, leaving things on a sentimental note. All in all, just a wonderful show.

I asked him if he found my camera he didn't then I asked if he enjoyed the show. He said he loved it and I was funny because I was getting into the music and I would check in with him and make sure he was enjoying it . One thing I said he thought was funny. This person is an an intelligent english speaking person, During the acoustic "The Water" I asked him, "Do you know what PROLIFIC means?" I think I quickly explained this is a rather new work in progress. |

Posted - 11/16/2006 : 11:35:24 Yeah, that stuff was funny about the mic stands. FB had a straight stand and the other two had boom mic stands. FB said the straight ones "look cooler". I don't know if he was just poking fun at his band mates or what, but I always used a boom stand on stage to sing because the straight ones got in the way of the damn guitar. And I thought the boom stand looked cooler. Shows how much I know. All this time, I was looking "not cool". Dammit. |

Posted - 11/16/2006 : 11:02:21 So I wasn't planning on writing a review but I'm thinking about the night so.......... He came on and did his acoustic intro in which he was being very INTERACTIVE (like my cyber age language?) with the crowd. During "California bound" he stopped after he sang the words "CALIFORNIA Bound" for the first time. Apparently the crowd cheer wasn't proper timing and energy. The crowd did cheer but maybe a bit off ( possibly because of the immense california smoke cloud in the air). So he stopped and kind of poked fun at the crowds slower response which the crowd insinuated was because of the Smoke in the air, someone yelled or he said "Contact High" and then he instructed the crowd when to cheer, It was funny because after each "California" from then on, the crowd let go a resounding cheer, an overexaggerated and fun cheer. At this point I really felt "At Home" or "in a living room" comfort. I'm not sure but I think it was during "The Song of the shrimp" (someone correct me if you can, now I'm told that it was during 'California Bound' but I disagree) In the middle of whatever song he started being funny and started to like Rockstar solo........He said something like "I've never done a solo for this song" or something and he started going off in this funny rockstar solo thing......it was funny. At the end of his rather long (and great) acoustic set he did this drumroll (on the guitar of course) introduction......that he finally stopped at the end sort of abruptly and said something like "Ok enough of that" everyone laughed. then right before they started EDF walked up to his Mic stand and said "I want a straight stand" FB said "You can have mine if you want" then they went into FB said "This is a Tom waits son" they went into "Black Rider"....EDF said "I want a STRAIGHT stand" and they went into "a gay old time" in SF....coincidence probably..... Great Fucking Show....More Later |

Posted - 11/16/2006 : 09:57:11 Yes! Great Show! I'm going to be quick right now considering a late night (I'll try to write a review later):
Ummm.....a couple things missing from above (which is totally understandable considering the freshness of the songs): He played "The Water" and "Gyneshawar" in the acoustic set and also played "Gyneshawar"(or however its spelled) in the full band electric set. I ended up bringing a handful of people who were unfamiliar with FB solo (some of them were "Pixies Fans" and all were open-minded to music) Everyone was impressed and had a great time. FB is my hero
The only thing I'm upset about is that I didn't bring the book I purchased for my hero. There's this book written by a man named JACK BLACK (not the fat comedian who I think took his stagename from this writer) anyways Jack Black wrote a book that inspired William S. Burroughs to write (He talked for many years). The book is called "You Can't Win", and it is an inspiration in my life (like FB's work) . This book is "Americana" at its finest, Train Hopping, Hobo Jungles...etc. etc.. I bought this for FB because of the writers name JACK BLACK (which would be his son's name if BLACK wasn't his stage name) and because of how important this book is to me. I was going to bring it but I figured I didn't want to hold a book the whole time. I knew if I didn't bring it I'd get stuck in an elavator with FB. There are no elevators at the Fillmore, but before the show started I was standing outside gathering the troops and Billy Block walked out and I yelled "Billy" what a dumb thing to yell when I've never met the man. Regardless of never meeting him he came over to me and shook my hand. Great guy! This was the point I could have given the book "You Can't Win" to FB. But of course I didn't bring it because I didn't want to haul the shit around. I'm figuring someone (considering the writer's name Jack Black) must have turned Mr. Thompson on to this underground legend. I'm babbling and its not even about the show...I'm sorry. It was a Great Fucking Show. Again, Frank Black is my hero.
I'll write a review later.
Peace |

Posted - 11/16/2006 : 04:38:29 PS - it wasn't sold out, but it was about 2/3 full I guess. Easy to get up front if you wanted, but not uncomfortably empty. It almost seems like FB feels more at ease with the audience if it's not completely packed. In my experience, he talks more to the crowd when it's a little less oversold.
Also, if you were paying attention, EDF and Duane Jarvis were wandering aroud the venue before the show, so you could have had a chat. Billy Block is a little less easy to disguise - I saw him hanging upstairs. So the lead guitar, singer, and bass player are all 5'6" or shorter - coincidence? Or did FB purposefully choose a "short" band to make him seem taller? No matter what their height, they rocked. |
