Posted - 04/22/2004 : 10:19:02 That the Coachella Warmup Party at the Glass House in Pomona on Friday Night is a Pixies gig. Heard it through Radiohead people, it went on sale 11 minutes ago. The fact it is a no-name band with "special guest" and a 2 ticket limit seems to imply somebody cool is playing
If anyone who is travelling with the band and can ask someone that would be huge...Of course they will probably say "what pomona gig"

They didn't serve beer until after the show, there was this whole lounge area type thing backstage. I lucked into the afterparty thru friends of friends. |

Posted - 05/04/2004 : 14:10:28 yeah. going to coachella the next day (with friends who weren't at the show) i had to pretend that it didn't suck, in comparison.. knowing i had gotten to see that show is probably the main thing that kept me from becoming violently annoyed at Coachella (with the heat and crowds).. it was like my little secret.
i like anazagos' and BLT's comments.. the lighting did look cool. that was one thing that really struck me, just how fucking cool they looked up there. the lighting was perfect. dark and ominous.. during some of the instrumental parts, when Frank would step back in the smoke, silhouetted.. it felt like some kind of ritualistic thing. i can't really explain it. it really did look surreal.
and like anazagos said, it was just this roar of guitars.. the sound was was unbelievable. and i've never heard them sound tighter, on any bootleg or what have you... his/their performance was above and beyond what it had to be.
i've noticed this before, but it seems to me that when Frank is at a smaller gig, ironically, he seems to put that much more effort into it; a theoretical "throw away" gig is treated as life and death.. i felt like at the Glass House he was just fucking all out.. giving 100 percent of his energy. where at Coachella, it was excellent. but the energy level was not quite the same level. some of the screams were softer etc..
basically (i was telling the person i went with this), the Glass House gig is how i would imagine a dream gig to be. like, if i had a wish-fantasy style dream that the Pixies played, it would probably look and sound just like the Glass House show. not to sound cheezy or like i'm exaggerating. but that's honestly how i feel about it.
i just feel lucky to have gone. this'll probably stay in my top 5 gigs of all time for life.
unless i can get Frank to play in my backyard or something. |

All seems right with the world when they save their best for Los Angeles... er, Pomona.
I gotta say I thought the Glass House was a pretty cool little venue. Totally no frills, but the laid-back ins & outs door policy is ace. Plus I didn't encounter any assholes that night.
I've been careful not to mention the show too many times around my wife. She's still irritated that she couldn't go. That wasn't my fault, but still I don't want to push my luck. |

Posted - 05/02/2004 : 11:27:52 I thought I should try and come up with a setlist so they can put it in the official setlist thread...otherwise, years from now, people won't believe this show really happened. As far as I can come up with, they did the 19 songs listed below, in roughly that order. It's still kind of surprising how many "every-nighters" they left out of this show - no Gouge, no Monkey, no Holiday, no Man, etc... Anybody sees anything I forgot, post it.
Bone Machine U-Mass I Bleed Cactus Dead Number 13 Baby Caribou Craxity Jones Something Against You Isla De Encanta Broken Face Hey Deabaser Gigantic Tame Wave of Mutilation (UKS) Vamos Nimrod's Son In Heaven / Where is My Mind

Posted - 05/02/2004 : 10:55:52 Anecdote: For the past two days since the show, about every 15 minutes, I say "you know, I saw the Pixies" to whoever's around (in most cases, only my roommate). It's like, it keeps occurring to me freshly at 15 minute intervals, and I keep getting stopped dead in my tracks by the realisation. It makes me very happy. |

I saw it but when they didn't repeat I thought it was coincidental. Now I think it was part of their master plan.
I also thought the lighting was great. |

the bridge in "Dead"
Yeah, it's funny, as they were playing that, I was struck with the thought "that's like their version of the bridge to "Here Today" off "Pet Sounds". I dunno why, but if I ever get the chance to speak to Charles, I'll tell him that, I'll bet he'd get a kick out of it.
Did anybody else notice the "Joe and Kim hop" during Broken Face? I noticed it but it was so quick and subtle (and they didn't repeat it in the song), I wasn't sure if I was imagining things. Then I read Kelley Deal's post about the first show, and she mentioned it, so I know it was a real planned bit of choreography. Perfectly executed, by all appearances. And the drumstick toss - people have referred to it before, but I always assumed that Dave tossed Joey a drumstick before the song, not during. Those Pixies, man, they don't do anything halfway.
I really liked the lighting at this show. All white, almost no colored lights. All the smoke and insanely bright, white light during "Bone Machine" was just overwhelming. |

Posted - 05/01/2004 : 13:49:08 After Moving Units left the stage, the Pixies' road crue got to work preparing the instruments. The guy in charge of Kim's P-bass tuned it and got the knobs adjusted correctly, then gently placed it on the stand. A few minutes later, he repeated the process. And again. Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" played while he walked around doing other things. Then he picked up the bass and checked it again. He must have examined that bass at least a dozen times. The thought passed through my mind that this guy's boss was around and he was trying to look busy. "Zen Arcade" droned on and on. I was thinking that, even though I own that album, it will by okay if I never listen to it again.
Finally the band came out. What a surreal experience. It was so strange to stand there and see Kim and Frank in front of me, both on stage at the same time. There was no set list, of course. "Bone Machine" was first up. Amazing song. After that I can't remember the order of the songs (I'm bad at that, just like I don't remember jokes). They did most of the early thrashers and sounded great. I think U-Mass was the only post-Doolittle track, which didn't really bother me. Count me as one who is happy they didn't do "Here Comes Your Man" or "La la Love You". Considering it was a relatively short set, the song selection was perfect.
A list of my personal highlights: -the bridge in "Dead" -the "Number 13" outro -Frank pressing his nose up against the mic -the bridge to "I Bleed" -"Broken Face" (the whole incredible song) -"Tame"
Some thoughts...
Standing about 15 feet in front of Kim, I was close enough to see a drop of sweat collecting on the end of her nose during the wonderful long outro to "Number 13". I waited to see if it would drop by the end of the song, but it didn't. The she and Frank both towelled off.
There was one track (I think it was the surf version of "Wave of Mutilation") where something with the bass seemed dreadfully wrong. I couldn't quite pin it down, though. It couldn't have been out of tune because it was okay on the songs before and after.
I was also a little miffed about getting stiffed for the encore, but considering this was a "secret" show and they've got a big day ahead of them in the desert heat, I don't blame them. |

Posted - 05/01/2004 : 07:31:53 The NME have a report on the gig here:
http://www.nme.com/news/108375.htm
"PIXIES PLAY SECRET WARM-UP SHOW
PIXIES performed a secret pre-COACHELLA gig outside LOS ANGELES last night (April 30).
Moving Units were billed alongside ‘Special Guests’ at the Pomona Glass House and shortly after 9.30pm, the guests were revealed as Frank Black and company performed an hour long set to a crowd that included Jack Black, Juliette Lewis and Har Mar Superstar.
The group opened with ’Bone Machine’ and played over a dozen songs including ’Debaser’ and ’Gigantic’, which Black stopped mid-song. "I get nervous," he said to bassist Kim Deal on stage. "It’s my guitar solo in the Pixies." |
