Posted - 04/19/2004 : 08:54:03 I expected some more debat about the level of the disclive recodings. What do you guys think of it? I have only heard some wave files of it with flac. decoding (so that is supposed to be no loss in audio, but who knows?) But they sound great! Sometimes there is a 'puff!' or 'glitch' but that seems logical if you know these motherfuckers were mixed live.

Posted - 06/22/2004 : 13:00:51 Hello. I went to the end of the concert from 7th june in Zenith of Paris to see if there was an official recording of the show that I could buy ( as I heard here and there but it had to be only in america or something or I don't know...). Instead of it, there was a bootlegger that was selling the cd for 35 euros (!). Is this honest ? I recorded the show from the 14th, where I went, with a little magnetophone (so the sound is very bad...) and I will share it for free so I don't understand... Are these peopple (the bootleggers) fans ? Am I dumb ?

Posted - 06/19/2004 : 18:39:44 hey.. just wanted to say that i got to see one of the london shows and the disclive boot of that show blows me away every time i hear it.
i CANNOT believe they got such a clean awesome sounding boot of that show, and i'm pretty sure that goes for the other london show boot i heard even tho i wasnt at the actual concert.
frankly (heh heh) i'm amazed. :D
this deal (heh heh heh) is the best ever. xx( ;) :P :D :D
sorry.. for the corny humour, but my amazement at how good the boots are is totally genuine.
every listen i am constantly finding myself in disbelief at how good the recording is.
maybe some other shows are a bit flat or whatever, but my god ppl!!! the clarity those guys got in london is amazing.
for the particular shows i have heard, i don't see how anybody could knock em.
i raise my glass to em.
awesome! :) :) :)

Posted - 05/25/2004 : 12:34:19 I agree with Benji. I received my copy of the Eugene show on 4/28 about a week ago. The drums are too much in the background on most of it which doesn't give it that umph! You can't really hear Franks strumming too well either which is a downer. I guess I was expecting too much as well, kind of disappointed. |

Posted - 05/25/2004 : 06:34:26 well i received my first disc (saskatoon) the other day, and frankly i'm disappointed with it. apart from my already posted 'pop' problem, i just think the sound and performance sound rather flat. maybe i haven't given it enough listens, but i also receieved a audio copy of the town & country dvd show the other day and the disclive cd isn't even in the same league. sure i realise that they're doing everything on-the-fly, but still....
i guess i was expecting too much.

Why is 'monosyllabic' such a long word? |

Posted - 05/04/2004 : 12:38:42 Not that I am saying anything groundbreaking here but I lucked out and bought a copy at the Coachella show and I have listened to it about 6 times since. I am amazed at the quality and the speed of the production. I highly recomend them to anyone who has a chance to get one of these disks, even if it is for some of the other bands that they are going to record. |

Posted - 05/03/2004 : 18:43:13 Jake, I just thought I'd throw in my redunant thanks, Dean and I (Mike) really appreciated touring the rig, and you being really nice to us despite being really busy. I hope your foot is all healed and you have a permanent bad memory Regina because of it (Regina is evil, Saskatoon rules, etc).

Posted - 05/02/2004 : 22:29:48 This Disclive service is the coolest thing since Napster. I love it! My Disclive disc is my new favorite Pixies album (as corny as that sounds). Live is the best way to listen to a Pixies song. |

Posted - 04/26/2004 : 22:23:59 No gaps, although they do split the discs at an awkward spot to make them each similar in length. I think they'd be safe to split them at the end of the first set. Then they wouldn't have a pointless fade out/in in the middle of the show, as they have them now.

Posted - 04/25/2004 : 19:50:47 yeah i figured id mixed some names up, thanx for clearing that up jake, tell the rest of the crew aaron says HI!!!, wish i had the money to keep going with the tour, but at least i'll be able to hear the recordings!!
everyone give love to the disc live crew when you see them in the venues, they work hard to record and distribute those discs city to city, and i only really know this from travelling show to show and seeing all the work they put in, and how many of them it takes to put it all together.....(btw, i do not work for the company)
each venue has a different sound dynamic so some shows are gonna translate to audio differently,
as someone who used to tour with phish alot and collect bootlegs, ive heard my share of poor recordings, and so i must say im impressed with the disc live recordings, and this is a new company so they are only gonna perfect their trade
...i wish these guys were around back when i was touring with phish, so give thanx for new technology, this tour is definitely a part of Pixies history so im glad i have some decent recordings to remember this by instead of relying on the randomness of audience bootlegs.... aaron

Thanks again, and great work with the recordings! Now quit hogging the band's internet connection. :)

Thanks for the kind remarks.
The audio guy who you talked to was actually Eric, our audio engineer. I'm the duplication engineer and manage all the computer systems on the road.
We're just about to head off the bus and record the Boise show. Wish us luck!

Posted - 04/25/2004 : 18:12:04 well im fresh off tour having seen all 8 canadian shows and i have all the recordings too!!!
first off i give my hats off to disclive, they do a tremendous job of producing a real nice recording of the show and getting it out to the fans so instantly, they rule!!!
i spent a lot of time on tour chatting with the disclive crew, and what i learned is that they are recording the shows thru the soundboard as well as having mics in the crowd for ambient recording....they have some special patented software they use for mixing down and equalizing the mix, like dean said, they have pre printed packaging for each date and once they have enough material for the first cd of the set they burn that while the show is still happening, i'd assume that for the second cd the audio engineer(thatd be Jake i believe) probably mixes each track down as they go, theyve got a trailer full of burners, and i think what i was told was that they can make about 800-1000 cd's in like 20 minutes, don't quote me on the figures cuz i stayed heavily buzzed the whole tour
so i after doing the canadian leg of shows and listening to the recordings, im still deciding which ones i like best, its hard, cuz for me there was some personal magic moments at each show so im glad i have them all...
i was introduced to Jake(audio disclive dude) after the first night in vancouver shows and he was asking me which recording i thought was best, and at that time i replied Saskatoon.... he told me that from and his perspective so far the best audio recording was Edmonton, that he felt they captured the best sound there, and he definitely made me more conscious of how each venue had different sound dynmaics, his instincts about the commodore was that it was not an easy venue to record in, but so far i must say i'm loving the discs, but going back and listening to Edmonton i must say that is a real nice clean recording....
i think its still gonna take me many listens to make a full critique...
solace, id love to hear some of your mix downs and id offer to send you some shows and see what you could do with them if your into it
gotta love new technology, i was so sad that my run of shows was over after the commodore, but now i get to relive it over and over again thanx to the disclive crew!!!!
see y'all on fall tour!!!

Posted - 04/21/2004 : 13:32:20 Agree. Saskatoon sounds brilliant -just been posted. Fuck I am green with envy with you people getting those club shows. I hope you know how lucky you are! |
Cult_Of_Frank |
Posted - 04/21/2004 : 12:22:32 I don't have Edmonton, but I'm listening to the rest of them back to back to see which has the best mix, and so far Saskatoon is easily the best recording. This might have something to do with it also being the best show and the band being so on that night, to be fair, but mix wise it does sound a bit better too.

Posted - 04/21/2004 : 12:10:06 If you're quick, there's 3 shows right now up on alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.bootlegs including a re-posting of the Minneapolis one... Most ISPs in the UK provide access to newsgroups as part of their package - it's a case of configuring Outlook or whatever to browse them. Not sure how this works elsewhere. Once you've sussed out where they are etc, you have to get into decoding y-encoded posts etc - easy once you get the hang of it and sounds more complicated than it is, but it does require a decent newreader, which you should be able to download free from the web. I am in NO way tecchie as you may have noticed... I don't condone bootlegging of course (a-hem) but with such a low pressing of such a quality product (and for someone with all his excess cash spent on tickets) these have been a lifeline for an obsessive on the other side of the atlantic and I'm eternally grateful to the guys who've posted these. It's been weird seeing how the playing's progressing night by night too...
No plans for UK CDs, I suppose?

Calistanian, are you referring to any specific video clips? I'm still wondering what those DV cameras were doing at Minneapolis. Are they explained in another thread?

Actually I was referring to the "video clips in my head", which are the memories invoked by playing the CD. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I wish I had my hands on some actual video clips. I don't know anything about the DV cameras...hopefully something becomes of that.

You know, I assumed you were referring to the "video clips in my head" which I also have. However, I just wanted to make sure all my bases were covered and ask for the hell of it. Thanks.
Not a problem. It's good to cover the bases when there's Pixies video footage possibly on the line.
