Posted - 08/05/2004 : 05:10:55 the decades mean jack, you're right. i didnt mean because i've been singing the song for some ten years now i know it all. just that since the song was conceived i've seen heard plenty of people singing tyre as to Frank himself. was just making a statement. alot of people seem confused and still dont believe frank sings tyre because for some reason they dont hear it. was just letting them know i and plenty of others 100% believe, know its tyre as much as that monkey went to heaven.
and yeah in england a rubber ring (tyre) is spelt tyre. blame our english teachers if its a problem.

Posted - 08/03/2004 : 23:49:02 I prefer Tiger, but it doesn't matter at all. I used to sing it: RRRRRRRRAAAAAAIIIIIIIAAAAAATTTTAAAIIIIIIEEERRR!!!!!! Stunning song.

Posted - 08/03/2004 : 13:23:47 Tyre - as in the rubber around a wheel rim, is definately the UK spelling.
Tire - to get 'tired' (Ahhh've been tiiiiiiiiyaad!) |

Posted - 08/03/2004 : 12:45:53 1 question...why is everyone spelling "tire" as "tyre"? Do you all mean "Tyre" as in the ancient city? Or "tire" as in the round object on vehicles that just happen to float on water?
I'm with chineselover on this one..why does it matter which decade?
I'm thinking it's probably "Tire"...not "Tyre" or "Tigris"...
::EDIT:: Weird, I did some research and apparently in England "tire" is spelled "tyre"...Weirdness. I wonder if it was named after the city or something? I is confused.

Posted - 08/02/2004 : 11:12:48 wow! i know theres some hardcore frank fans here and too the pixies, but hasnt it always been tyre since the very beginning. i don't know why its still being debated and questioned. theres quite a few of us who have been singing 'tyre' since the late 80's.
and there ain't no 'g' because there aint no tiger |

Posted - 07/31/2004 : 18:23:39 Yeah, I've listened very carefully for the g before and I've decided that there is definitely not one.

Posted - 07/31/2004 : 16:46:34 I've just listened closely to the Disclive CD of Brixton 5th June, and he definitely sings "tyre" every time. There's not a hint of a "g" sound.

Posted - 07/26/2004 : 09:10:35 I always thought it was "tiger" and I thought it was a reference to the tigris river. Now that this thread has come up, I've listened more closely to live recordings and it does sound more like "tyre/tire". The thing is you're missing the point if you're trying to make sense out of his Pixies lyrics, because a lot of them were written just because the syllables sounded good with the music, not because the words themselves make any sense ("This monkey's gone to heaven" is a perfect example of that). In my personal opinion, whether it's the actual lyric or not I like "tiger" better. whenever I've listened to the song I've always envisioned somebody riding a tiger alongside the river (not on the actual river itself), and that's a pretty cool image. |

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 17:25:18 it could mean the tigris river which flows into the Euphrates.. if its a dangerous fast, hard to navigate, an adrenalin rush of a river then tiger would makes sense... y'know trying to ride or control something really dangerous...but i don't think its known for much white water, lots of biblical references to the Euphrates which fits in with a lot of early pixies stuff.. |

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 11:32:26 Tigris and Euphrates -- Ride the Tiger just sounds like a great FB-ism from that era. It HAS to be tiger.
Ride a tire down the River Euphrates?? Its a little too Mark Twain-y imgaery (riding a tire down a river) for a song refrencing all things middle east -- Gaza strip, dead sea...
though, then again, if the car breaks down and is out of gas, maybe you do just take off a tire and ride it down the river euphrates instead. Now I've confused myself.
It now makes sense to me that its tire since if you ran out of gas from driving too fast, maybe you just need to slowly ride ride ride ride ride ride a tire down the river instead. The dead sea makes it float, since the salty water makes everything float very easily. Of course the Gaza Strip, dead sea, and euphrates river dont' connect physically, but image-wise it works great.
Hmmmm....

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 07:39:19 It's either "Tiger", "Tyre", or "Tire".
Tiger being the Tigris River. Tyre being the ancient city in Lebanon. Tire being..well..a tire that you ride on water.

Posted - 07/21/2004 : 07:35:30 If you speak English it's Tyre, if you speak American it's Tiger. Anyone see a connection with Philip K. Dicks' The Transmigration Of Timothy Archer? I'm previsualising my own sweatlessness at the end of the set. 4+ months from now. You can't put a tyre in your tank. |

Posted - 07/20/2004 : 17:25:11 Got to be "tyre". Makes more sense - you get amusement park rides in large tyres going down water flumes. But then, Pixies lyrics often don't make sense immediately or in an obvious way.
As for its live performance, it was just awesome at Brixton, as was the rest of the gig. And coming towards the end of the set, it just about drained the last drop of sweat out of my body.

Posted - 07/20/2004 : 05:36:55 Its 'Tyre', but last time I checked, aint nothing wrong with thinking 'Tiger' which would work as well.
I remember Paul McCartney telling a story about how one of his musicians had been singing Strawberry Fields' line, "living is easy with nice clothes, misunderstanding all you see", rather than "living is easy with eyes closed..."....funny. |
