I second Sad Punk about Maxeen. They're like a shitty blend of U2 and the Police. Between songs (and very early in their LONG set), the uppity singer/bassist made smartass comments about the crowd's lack of enthusiasm for their rehashed brand of Sting-rock..."Oh, nobody's dancing-- that's right, this is L.A." I think it's safe to say that few were impressed.

Don't visit: http://www.maxeen.com/

i forgot to post how over the top crappy the openning band MAXINE was at the Spaceland show was
try to avoid them at all cost
i swear they did at least 20 minutes of sound check
and then, a few songs into the set , COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SOUND
their performance is # 1 on my top 10 worst opening band list

Floop, what have you been hearing?
BLT Posted - 03/29/2004 : 20:11:12
I am not going to either of these shows, which significantly increases the likelihood of Pixie activity.

how 'bout tomorrow at the troub? since i'm going to that one, i'm sure it will be pixies in some form. a warm up for the other secret show.

At least, I doubt very much it will be a Pixies show, prob. just get on stage for a song or two. So, the first Pixies show will still be up for grabs :-) Thats my story and I'm sticking to it....

i'll buy your ticket.

i don't have tickets. i got to see the breeders the other weekend and figured i got my fill.

but i've been hearing things too.. interesting things..

and now i might find myself one unhappy camper if i miss out on something that i shouldn't miss out on.

OK check this out. I know a dude who's spoken to the promoter of the Pixies' warm up tour or something and the word around here is that we can pretty much expect a Pixies appearance at one of these Breeders shows this week.

The deal is that a lot of the higher profile bands playing Coachella are under contract to not play any L.A. shows a month out from the concert and I guess some hints have been kind of dropped by people in the know... like "Don't be surprised if so and so happens..."

I don't mean to provide more baseless fodder for the rumour mill but I think there might be a little substance here... if not we can all enjoy chewing on it for a while at least.

***BURBANK UPDATE***
BURBANK (LOL)- Walked by the old Pirate's Cove last night. It's reopening next week and is called "The Park" (with a baseball theme).

I got a wonderful, beautiful, rocking sister, but she's as white as the rest of us. Oh, and she's married, in Colorado...

flop, dude, that's not Burbank anymore, you're in NoHo.
But I'm a sucker for beautiful Latinas (why do you think i live in Echo...)

Let's have a Black lunch at the Colombian joint. Or Chili John's. Seems we three have a similar spice tolerance.

I once had lunch at the Buchanan and Jonathan Winters and Gary Owens were going stratospherically improvisational in conversation next to us. Those guys had all afternoon. Is the Pirate's Cove still nearby?

Today I had a great sushi lunch in Burbank at Yamakawa, near Trader Joe's on Riverside, Toluca Lake (pretty sure it's barely in the Burbank end). Very good sushi for less than most good places.

FB content: Although not quite in Burbank, when I lived near the top of Barham in the 90's there was a small Mexican place called Uptown Taco on Cahuenga West, at that real lousy intersection where its a terror to park. It was there that I first had a non-show sighting of Our Hero. I wondered if he lived nearby, cause nobody really stopped for that place, by '97 it was a gonner. I was real curious but I decided to leave him undisturbed, half way through a Three Taco Combo.

Surely that justifies the corruption of this thread?

I might have time on Friday for a Burbank lunch...

echo-maestro, it's funny you mention Uptown Taco. my friends and i used to go there all the time back in the day because Frank mentioned it in an interview in the LA Times.. they used to have a signed 8X10 of him in there. so apparnatly he was a regular.

now it's some stupid Vegan place. nothing is sacred.

Yamakawa is pretty good. but if you want the ultimate lunch sushi place you have to go to Tama Sushi in Studio City. on Ventura, East of Laurel Canyon. the best. they have combination lunches starting at 8 bucks. but everything is total quality. the bento box ($12, but worth it) is your choice of 2 (either salmon, chicken, beef or tempura) plus sashimi or a roll.. salad, miso soup, fresh fruit, green tea. fucking great. and La La's is across the street. excellent excellent Argentinian place.

i miss working in that area.

my schedule is chaotic on a day by day basis, but lunch could be a possibility. do you have a sister?

I would like an FB lunch but I work in Pasadena so I'm no go...

Pirate's Cove shut down a while back (probably less than a year). Too bad cos they had Murphy's Stout on tap. That place was pretty unhappening, though.

Columbian isn't as spicy as Mexican, but the servings are generous and they've got some interesting combinations. if you go there, get the house specialty called "Picada".. it's got: sausage, carne asada, fried pork crisps, potatoes, fried green plantains, fried banana, and arepa (this bread stuff).. after that, you won't need to eat the rest of the day.

and again, the waitresses.. yikes.

if you're not feeling like mounds of fried food, they've got great steak and seafood dishes. and this really kick ass soup called Sanocho Criollo "steak soup with greeen plantain, yucca and potatoes. served with rice, avocado, salad and arepa" (i've got the take out menu with me at the moment)..

and again, the waitresses.. oh my lord!

just keep your meat hooks off the one with the long black hair. she's mine!

the food's pretty good too.

I'll have to go there. I don't know what Colombian food is like. Is it spicy? I need pain or I cannot taste anything.

Santoro's is a block and a half from my house.

One other place I didn't mention on this list is Buchanan Arms, the British restaurant/pub at Burbank & Keystone. I like that place and it's within walking distance so I can drink without having to drive.

Regarding Burbank food...

Yes, Giamela's finally put up a sign! That old sign used to crack me up... not only was the writing gone, but the whole structure was twisted like it had been damaged in a tornado. Years ago the guy told me they are not related to the "other Giamela's". The "other Giamela's" is still in Atwater on Los Feliz Blvd. They also had that one on Riverside and one at Sunset & Gower in the early '90s.

Exotic Thai is on San Fernando about halfway between Burbank and Scott Road (in the mini-mall next to Popeye's Chicken). Very good Thai IMO, and I eat LOTS of Thai.

Bahia is good for certain dishes. I dig the carne asada, the shrimp cocktail. I loved the carnitas plate until I stopped eating super fatty foods.

Pinocchio's is okay every once in a while. The tomato/onion/oil sauce they put on the sandwiches is awesome.

We should have a dedicated thread to all this.

Aye, kinda what I was hoping. Have not seen them except I caught the last two tunes of a surprise show at Mr. T's Bowl a few years back by accident. It sounded messy but I didn't really catch the meat of the show...

Burbank recommendations? My frequently visited establishments...

Exotic Thai - Where's that?
Ribs USA - Good. Fun . Cheap.
Bella Vista - Tony's!! Real Siciilian family. Nice place.
Bahia Caporales - Mariscos... just OK (that was 10 years ago... better now?)
Casitas Tacos - mmmm. I've spent $1000's there, even though it's cheap!

Giamela's (Magnolia & Victory)?

- Minimalism is right! Did they ever even put up a sign? I would go there in the 90's amd there was no sign outside the building. The paint was peeling like crazy. Finally they painted it pretty nice, but never bothered to make a sign. They had one on Riverside with sketchy hours. Still there?

Across from Bella Vista is a real old favorite - Pinocchio's. Big slab o' Lasagna for $3.65 or so. Litre of wine for $4! Cafeteria quality, nothing like Tony's, but very fun and a great Italian deli/market. But Chili John's is the coolest.

Don't you all want to visit Burbank now? Alas, I now live in... echo park!

SO was it a great, rocking show? I got tickets for the Troub, but I also have a band practice scheduled, oops. I'm sure it's fun like anazgnos said... but if I'm gonna bail on my band, it's gotta be a good throbbing show! No matter who shows up.

And what were the Burbank restaurant recommendations? I work at Warner Bros. My absolute #1 favorite is Chili John's. I am there every week. What a great, real place.
DrBone Posted - 03/22/2004 : 14:20:59
I think that the only of the three Breeders L.A. shows that has the possibility of showcasing the mighty talents of all four Pixies would be the second Spaceland gig on the first with the "Special Guest" caveat on the band listing. I don't think that the Pixies or the Breeders would be as classless as to list one band and then put another one on stage... This announced special guest benefit show looks like much more of a reality than any of the others so keep your fingers crossed.

it was nice meeting BLT and his wife, and trading Burbank restaurant recommendations.

indeed, a good time was had. i ran into a few people i hadn't seen in a while, including a friend from DC who was in town unexpectedly and managed to get tickets. so i was having a great time.

got me a pic with Joey at the bar after the show..

ok. must get to work.. look forward to seeeing people's pictures.

Holy crap! I saw Anazgnos at the Breeders show.. I was
right behind him when he got the single signed; I even
saw him blow on the signature so that it wouldn't smear
when he put it in the plastic sleeve.

Ha! I'm easily amazed.
anazgnos Posted - 03/22/2004 : 02:45:32
It was a fun show! Band was in great spirits, Kim looked great (new haircut). Huffer, Saints, No Aloha, Little Fury, Flipside, IJWGA, Head to Toe, Hag, Off You, Gigantic (w. Joey), New Year, Cannonball, Safari, Empty Glasses, Doe, Tipp City, Pacer, Full on Idle, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Fortunately Gone, Iris, Forced to Drive, Divine Hammer...not in order, but I'm pretty sure that's all they played. It was a thrill to see Joey onstage; I've never actually seen him before. No new songs, which was a slight disappointment, but I can't complain about what they did play. Finally got a chance to have Kelley sign the Forced to Drive fanclub 7", which Kim signed for me 2 years ago.

for accuracy's sake, I want to point out that the photos posted just above show Joey and Kelley, not Kim... Kelley is not in the Pixies.

Even though I was there and can confirm that this was really a Breeders show, I've heard rumours circulating that it might have been Pixies show!!! Can anyone confirm this? Pretty exciting if it's true.
