I normally hate when they do that in clubs, it tends to age me about 20 years and then all the chicks stop eyeing me up when they see my drunken red eyes. But when they did it at the SECC it was kind of nice, made it more.... like everyone came together. I can't find the word, you know what i mean. If I had just smoked some pot I'd be able to find the word, but I just got out of bed and the morning glory hasn't quite worn off yet.

Frank did this on a Frank Black and the Catholics tour too. Was Manchester, Dog in the Sand tour. During the encore he switched on the lights so he could have a good look at us and continued playing. Was very cool!

(looking forward to Pixies tonight!)

The curfew at the Academy is 11.00 p.m. Do I risk it and go to the gig by train Thursday? If the stage times are the same, I'd make my last train at St. Pancras at 11.30. If they play till 11.00 (as they can), I'd probably miss it. Decisions, decisions!

Cheers for the info Ziggy. I should be able to get home ok after the gig!

Anyone know what time they came onstage at Brixton and what time it all ended? Want to make sure I don't miss it and can get the tube ok afterwards!

Man, I so hope we get The Happening and Motorway to Roswell at the dam...

Bone Machine was the third. Magnificent it was too.
pot Posted - 10/06/2009 : 13:17:59
I'm hearing they did 3 more songs at brixton tonight as well. Gigantic, U-Mass and I can't remember the third.

I guess we got 8 songs at the SECC to kind of make up for what happened in 1991 though.

I think this may have actually been a one-shot deal. Via Joey's Twitter...

Why the extended encore at Glasgow? 19 years ago the barricade broke after 3 songs and we had to stop at the SECC.

It's great that they are doing a proper encore now, but why did they not just do that in the first place? They must have known there would be a public out cry about it.

Alternatively, it could very well turn out to be yet another Minotaur style anti-climax.

that has to be one of the worst moments in Pixies history.

i could see them doing something with bam thwok because there was an article a few months ago saying that kim sent frank those demos.

ill keep my expectations low though

Do you know the link about that article?

i cant find it but i remember posting about it on this forum a while back . frank basically said that Kim sent him the demo and they are thinking of doing something with it.
Paul Posted - 10/04/2009 : 14:41:25
Sounds good mcil ... a longer set is what we wanted to hear. However, intriguing they played with the house lights on ... could this extended set have been a one-off to atone for the 15-minute thing in Glasgow in '91? Or is it a forerunner for the rest of the tour?
mcil Posted - 10/04/2009 : 14:13:12
Just back from the SECC gig, third time I'd seen the Pixies after Meadowbank gig in '05 and Isle of Wight earlier this year, and best night by a mile, best gig I've ever been to full stop. Ten minute multimedia intro thingy which consisted of Un Chien Andalou and then the same setlist as reported in Dublin (4 b-sides, Doolittle and an encore of a further two b-sides) then after the house lights had come up the band re-emerged and Kim said something along the lines of the following, "Remember the last time we played here in 1991 or something and we only played for 15 minute before the stage collapsed? Well tell your parents we finished the gig". They then played a further 8 songs (what I can remember The Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, Isla De Encanta, Something Against You, Caribou, Broken Face, Vamos, Where Is My Mind?, not essentially in that order) with the house lights up. Crowd was well up for it tonight, band seemed to really enjoy themselves too, Charles must be a very proud man on nights like this, well done sir.

Sorry to reply to myself, but some happy news just in from a lad on the Word Magazine forum, reporting from the Glasgow SECC ... after the Doolittle sets tonight, the band came back out and played a third encore with large chunks of Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. If I'd paid for the Dublin dates I would feel a bit short-changed ... but happier news for us on the mainland!
Paul Posted - 10/04/2009 : 13:35:20
No worries Gav, hope your wife gets through the gig ok!! I'm spending about £140 on a trip to London for this, which includes return train fare, a cheap bed for the evening and the ticket. Obviously it's my own choice to spend all this, I figure it's worth it as the chance to see the Pixies may never come round again, who knows? But it is a lot of dough, so you just want to make sure you get as much as poss for your money. No doubt though a lot of people are forking out much more than me. I am massively looking forward to it now though, I gather from another thread that the encore was a little bit longer on the last night in Dublin.
I was at the Meadowbank Stadium gig as well, a pretty good night as I remember!
Ziggy Posted - 10/04/2009 : 04:35:11
It'll be interesting to see how the show pans out for the rest of the tour. Apparently it's going to be 'revealed' tonight in Glagow.

Hmmm yes, point taken but for what I imagine is quite a few people going, it's not a question of "£35 in your pocket" - they're not a band who tour the UK extensively anymore so unless you live in London, Dublin or Glasgow you'll likely be spending a LOT more than that on travel to and from the gig, possibly even accomodation, both money and time-wise.

To contrast - the last time (over 4 years ago now) I was able to see Pixies I travelled from Hertfordshire to Edinburgh for the Meadowbank stadium gig, I was driven up and stayed in a hotel. The set we got (along with the excellent support) made it, like the Brixton and Forum gigs beforehand all totally rewarding and worth the battle to get hold of tickets / effort travelling to etc.

But, y'know, the Brixton gig will no doubt be amazing for sure. VERY curious to see what difference visuals etc make to a Pixies show. Personally I'm not too bothered about set length for myself but it's more of a shame that it'll be my wife's first Pixies show (she's over 7 months pregnant so it'll be a bit of a mission for her anyway).

I can't afford any anyway, but just so I don't get spending fever on the night, what's the merchandise like this time round?

Edit - whoops sorry Paul, didn't spot your post below that more or less said the exact same thing :S
Paul Posted - 10/03/2009 : 11:54:07
If it's your first Pixies gig, Pixiestu, I'm sure you'll love it. I saw them for the first time at T in the Park five years ago, couldn't have been more excited beforehand if I'd been seeing the Beatles, and they didn't disappoint. Haven't been to Brixton Academy before but it sounds like the perfect venue for them.
The shorter set is a bit of a bugbear for me given the travel/accomm expense I'm going to - but at the same time, I take pudmeister's point, it's the Pixies, there's something wrong if you're not up for it and sometimes it is nice to be left wanting more....
pudmeister Posted - 10/03/2009 : 09:21:23
Im going next thursday and maybe friday. not bothered about an hour set.

They've only done one show! It might change.

Im sure all of you will have a good night. Fuck the money aspect. Would you rather be at home with £35 in your pocket or watching your favourite band without it???

I knew it was a Doolittle tour when I bought my tickets, but I was expecting at least a few songs from their other alums too, maybe Vamos (a Pixies gig without it just seems weird!), Holiday Song and a couple of others.

I'm sure I'll enjoy Brixton however long the set since this is my first time seeing the Pixies!

That's what remembered (not that I was there for any of it). It was the first tour that initially was said to have too short of a set.
Ziggy Posted - 10/02/2009 : 03:04:59
The opening acoustic set was part of the later Normal/Archer shows (certainly the London one had it), which spun things out a bit.

In the UK and Europe the following year (2008), the sets were entirely made up of 'Bluefinger' and 'Svn Fngrs' (plus a couple of covers, but had the excellent 'precores' earlier in the day.

No - that was the Frank Black "93-03" tour with Ding and Charles - i believe they're referring to the tour later that year with Jason and Dan and (sometimes) Violet who did Bluefinger, one or two Pixies songs and a few b-sides ("Get Away Oil").

He only started doing the acoustic set because people were complaining that the initial shows were too short.
pot Posted - 10/02/2009 : 01:02:44
I saw him on the Bluefinger tour, and both time I felt like I got my moneys worth. The first time he played an acoustic set for about 25 minutes, then the band came on and played for about an hour. I don't know but it was a small venue and I left feeling very satisfied. The second run was also good as we got the precore, then the gig which probably lasted for about 1hr and 15 minutes. I got about what I expected, although the first run of gigs in 2007 were probably better.

To be fair, the ticket prices for the Bluefinger tour were much cheaper than for these gigs.

Also I believe they are building a new big, music venue as part of the SECC complex (just in front of the Armadillo for those who know) that is 'supposed' to have great acoustics - shame it's still a building site though
pot Posted - 10/01/2009 : 12:26:22
Yeah Paul, the SECC has always been critised for having really bad acoustics. I'm surprised they haven't torn it down by now and built a better venue by now. This is part of the reason why I haven't chosen to see them in Amsterdam as well, by contrast the Heieneken Music Hall I'm told has near perfect acoustics.

Well, I see no reason why they cannot review their tour setlist if they get lots of complaints from fans. It is a bit odd that they are doing this, I don't think that adding on a few more tracks, say one from each of the three other albums at the end is asking too much of them. I've put a message up on Charles' facebook asking nicely if they can consider maybe making the set a wee bit longer, but as yet no response. He'll probably come online in a bit after the second Dublin show, it's worth a try...

Funny, I think the last band I ever saw at the SECC was the Pixies all those years ago as well. I remember the acoustics on that occasion were not that bad though, but we were in a different smaller section of the building then. Other bands I've seen there are Metallica and AC/DC, both of whom played for about 2 and a half hours, at least! Oh yeah and (don't laugh) I've also seen Status Quo play there! Has to be done at least once in your life...

Paul Posted - 10/01/2009 : 10:29:40
The SECC is not the best venue either, Pot - another negative point! As I've said elsewhere on the forums - I am looking forward to Brixton but am disappointed that having gone to a fair bit of expense to get to and stay in London on the Thursday night, that we are only getting an hour/65 minutes. I do feel a bit let down. Any other Pixies gig I've been to, the band have rattled through a large swathe of their back catalogue and you couldn't possibly feel short-changed, but now .... I know it is advertised as the Doolittle tour, but being fair you are entitled to expect that album/b-sides as the main feature with an extended encore of some of their other stuff.
darwin Posted - 10/01/2009 : 10:23:50
Wasn't this an issue during the European Bluefinger tour? In that case, Frank ended up adding an acoustic solo part before the show. This Doolittle thing is obviously a bigger production, but wouldn't be surprised if they add some songs in the encores if they hear many complaints (or reviews) focused on the short show.
pot Posted - 10/01/2009 : 06:26:33
Are they trying to go out of their way to piss off their entire fan base this year? First Minotaur, now a poxy 65 minute set?

Oh well, it'll be an improvement on the last time they played the SECC for a whole 15 minutes.

Doolittle, too late.

*emergency crappy askiitobee*
Ziggy Posted - 10/01/2009 : 05:00:27
I don't begrudge them in the slighest doing it just for the money ... it's long overdue for the band.

They've rehearsed heaps of songs (and the lack of that was the excuse for those short Black Francis shows). But just playing for an hour just takes the piss, and shows remarkable contempt for those paying to see them.
