Posted - 06/13/2010 : 01:01:01 On Bf.net it has a Brisbane date (at "The Zoo") just before Splendour - can't find any other mention of it besides a facebook page with no details. Looks like one of their 'warm-up' shows, given they wont play for a month before Splendour. I want a ticket! |

The Swell Season proved to be an early highlight. Featuring former lovers Glen Hansard of the Frames and Czech singer and pianist Marketa Irglova, who rose to fame through the 2007 film Once, the outfit performed hits Falling Slowly and When Your Mind's Made Up as well as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.
The set ended with a surprise appearance by Pixies frontman Black Francis.
Although the iconic US rocker wasn't on the Blues 'N' Roots bill, he turned up to support Hansard and Irglova.
Together they performed the seminal Pixies hit Where is My Mind? to the ecstasy of many Gen Xers.
keeping it krause: Pixies.

Posted - 03/16/2010 : 19:52:12 Frank didn't say a word between songs on either night, apart from mouthing something like "what the fuck, man" in disgust at some clown who starting frisbeeing cds towards the stage on the first night. He was in great voice though.
Kim was more talkative, but said the same things at the same time each night, ie. "some b-sides" "thats the end of side one" "we know songs that aren't on that album by the way".
Planet Of Sound was sensational, and I was dying to hear Velouria after never hearing it in my first 3 pixies experiences - was a great way to end the 2nd night. Oh yeh, before "Dig For Fire", Kim said "we had to practice this one this morning. Its gonna be good". And it was. I'm jealous though Benji - that encore on the 12th looks....frenetic. Probably a good thing though, energy levels were nearing zero around the time of Crackity Jones. I'm getting too old.
Can't get over how good they sounded though, especially after the woeful openers "The Art". They did have some comical song names though...."Figment Of My Imagination"..."Indecisive Weirdo". |
benji |
Posted - 03/16/2010 : 19:20:44 some great songs in those encore's. a little short, but velouria, planet of sound and dig for fire are outstanding.... would love to hear those songs.... for completeness, here's the 2nd encore from the march 11 gig: Isla de Encanta Nimrod's Son U-Mass Bone Machine Vamos Caribou Gigantic Where is My Mind?
and the 12th: Where Is My Mind? Broken Face Isla De Encanta The Holiday Song Nimrod's Son U-Mass Gigantic

Posted - 03/16/2010 : 14:45:27 Saw em at Sydney at the Hordern on Sunday and Monday nights. Great fun, as expected. Was pretty crazy up the front on Monday night in particular. The sound was perfect.
2nd encores:
Sunday: Where is My Mind Planet Of Sound (!) Dig For Fire Gigantic
Monday: Velouria :P Nimrod's Son Vamos Where Is My Mind
was hoping for longer encores but oh well.... |

*bump*
WA Today - Rock legends of the past flocking to WA.
Another hugely influential band out of the 80s is The Pixies. Formed in Boston in 1986 and disbanding in 1992, this is only the second time they have come to Australia. The first was when they reformed in 2007 and now they will be in town to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their third album, 1989s Doolittle. The Pixies legacy is said to have helped form the alternative rock boom of the 1990s, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana cited Pixies second album Surfer Rosa as one of his main influences. You can still witness your own piece of rock history when The Pixies play at Belvoir Amphitheatre on March 27 as tickets are still available.
