The Pixies are playing at "the Egg" in Albany New York.

I don't think it's on this site, but it's listed on ticketmaster.

A friend told me it's an acoustic set as well, but i'm not positive.

It's a smaller venue, and I am so there!

It's all about semantics in New York. At the same time, the Pixies will be headlining in Brooklyn along with Gang of Four, Built to Spill, Rilo Kiley, Death From Above 1979, Nine Black Alps, and Mando Diao.

The next day, Beck will headline in Brooklyn, along with the Raveonettes, Gang Gang Dance, and Whirlwind Heat. The reunited Lemonheads will take the stage in Staten Island, along with headliner Oasis, Kasabian, Jesse Malin, and the Redwalls.

Ticketmaster.com lists an Internet presale for tickets kicking off on Thurs., August 11 at 9 a.m.; tickets are available to the general public starting at 10 a.m. on August 12. Click here for more info.

kathryn Posted - 08/06/2005 : 21:09:12
it's not just a HC outtake. it's an old traditional blues song.

they played it three times so far...atlantic city on wed night,
albany ny thursday night and four hours ago at the newport folk
festival. probably the only three times they will ever play it?

they did that song early in the set in newport, at which point all the folkies bolted en masse, leaving us pixies punks with lots of room to dance to (the show got harder once they got that tune out of the way).

I was at the show and it was my first time hearing the song as well(No, they didn't play "All Over the World" off of _Bossanova_). It was a great country song with a death row theme - I assumed it was an old Johnny Cash or Merle Haggard song, but it seems it may be a Frank Black written classic. Someone else on the forum said it might be released on the Sicilian.

Wow, what a great show, stripped down to the bare essentials. David's kit - an un-snared snare, hi hat, bass & tambourine, he played one handed a lot. Joey may have felt constrained by his acoustic Gibson, but it was great to hear all the notes and chords ringing out un distorted. Kim did seem a bit smaller behind her huge bass (not stand up) but again it was great to hear those bass notes resonating purely. Frank plays acoustic half the time anyway so at moments some songs sounded no different than usual. The audience sat down after the initial welcoming applause, quite a difference from Amherst, it was a bit weird to see a room full of sitters at a Pixies show. Everyone stayed standing for the Gigantic encore and my wife and I were able to do a little dance. At U Mass, Gigantic was a happy sanitorium, in Albany, little dances. Although at moments they seemed to be still finding their acoustical sea legs it was altogether just what these 50 year old ears wanted.

I thought here she was refering to having to come up with banter or to the prospect of playing "Lemon Tree Very Pretty"
(I'll bet there's a dusty old recording of a 14 year old Charles T. singing "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" out there somewhere.)
I thought it was odd Frank didn't refer to the fact that they were playing inside a giant saucer shaped building, sort of a Clamshell of The Gods washed up on the shores of downtown Albany, maybe they didn't look out the bus window on their way in.

Wow Kathryn, that Albany show sounds as if it was one of a kind. A warm-up for the Newport show, amazing. Love the Frank-n-Kim quips.

Now go get some rest, get some lovin, and get ready to get some more PIXIES, huh!

Setlist, to the best of my abilities at 1 a.m.:

Caribou
Cactus
Bone Machine
Velouria
Here Comes Your Man
River Euphrates
Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf)
Is She Weird
Mr. Grieves
Ed is Dead
Gouge Away
Monkey Gone to Heaven
Subbacultcha
Holiday Song
Nimrod's Son
Needle In My Arm/All Around The World
I Bleed
Crackity Jones
Hey
Vamos
Where Is My Mind?
encore - > Gigantic (after which Kim gave some lucky bastard in the audience the setlist that had been taped by Joey's feet)

A typical 2004 set, as many of the Trompe/Bossa tunes they've bust out in 05 sadly were absent. The whole acoustic thing was literally physically frustrating; it's excruciating to have your body denied a good mosh to Nimrod's Son. Kim put it best when she said, in response to Charles joking that "maybe acoustic is this band's future," "I'd rather be shot in the face."

But what the night lacked in hard rocking and fresher tunes, it more than made up for in banter. Never has the band chatted or joked so much from the stage.

Frank did most of the talking (beginning with a story of his trip to the mall today to get "transitional lenses" at Lenscrafters) but this was Kim's show. She sang Velouria like an angel, she was amazing with the spotlight on her and she killed the last part of the song (beautifully doing the "V-E-L-O-U-R-I-A"s).

Lots of Frank-n-Kim quips:

Frank: "We should have brought the big amps tonight. There's gonna be a riot like Dylan back in '66..."
Kim: "Only reverse."
Frank: "Reverse Dylan!"

Kim and Frank noticed that Joey had a mic and they ganged up on him:

Frank: "Joe since when do you have a microphone on stage?"
Kim: "I haven't heard you say anything for like 20 years."
(Someone in the audience shouted one of the night's many "I love you Kim"s.)
Kim: "Did you request a mic tonight or did you find it there? This is fascinating! I've never seen you with a mic."
Frank: "Are you gonna sing?"
Joey: "Negative"
Frank: "Maybe if I get the audience to kind of..."
Huge applause and shouting from the audience.

Frank kept referring to Saturday's Newport Folk Festival gig: "We're getting ready for the folk thing," etc.

Frank introducing Here Comes Your Man: "I have to count this song off because I'm a control freak."

The show was taped. Was Atlantic City? First time in 05 I've seen a gig being taped. Anybody know what that's about?

Did I imagine Frank started "Blister In The Sun" in the intro to Velouria?

God help me, in 6 hours I get to drive to the Newport show. I love this band. I'm sooooo psyched. I'm sooooo sleepy.

it was a really awesome show

frank joked about how it they couldn't legally advertise this set as the first acoustic show, since Rhode Island Aug 6th is booked as such. So he said thats the first night they're playing acoustic.......not tonight. He said both the band, and the audience could be sued.

Good stuff, more chatter. They actually said they were warming up because they thought they needed to tell storys at the folk festival.

Needle in My Arm was a surprise...
Kim smoked cigarettes. They closed the night with Gigantic.

Beck, Pixies, B&S to Play Across the Pond Fest

James Gregory reports:

Yes kids, it looks like there's yet another mammoth rock festival on the horizon. (What, are they manufacturing these things in third world factories now?) Not content to sit back and let Perry Farrell bask in his post-Lollapalooza glory, a slew of hipper-minded artists have recently signed on for the inaugural Across the Pond Festival in New York City in early October.

While full details are still coming together, as a number of artists are still being courted for the event, Across the Pond is currently scheduled to feature performances by Beck, Pixes, Gang Of Four, Belle and Sebastian, the Killers, New York Dolls, Oasis, and Jet-- with Jim Glancy, of event promoters Ron Delsener Presents, promising, "The complete line-up of talent will be staggering."

Taking a page from the UK wondertwins Reading and Leeds, the two-day affair will be held simultaneously at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, N.Y., with shows at both venues set for October 1 and 2. It's still unclear as to how the groups will be divvied up between the locations, but we'll keep you posted as further developments come to light. We sure hope the Pixies and Gang of Four don't play at the same time-- our cred hurts just thinking about having to decide between the two.

In the meantime, Billboard is reporting that both single- and multi-day passes will be available for the shows, with a discounted rate being offered for the latter. No word yet on pricing, or whether the admission fees will include earplugs for Jet's performance. Or noseplugs for the stench of Staten Island.
