I PERSONALLY FEEL THIS IS THE BEST PIXIES ALBUM AND HAS A BUNCH OF THEIR BEST SONGS. ALL OVER THE WORLD AND THE HAPPENING ARE MY FAVORITES. EVERYTHING I READ OR SEE ON THE PIXIES CITES THIS AS THE POINT WHERE THINGS STARTS TO GO DOWN. I THINK ITS THEIR FINEST HOUR. WHO'S WITH ME?

Unless you happened to not have another Pixies album and, get it for 50 cents! ;)
klikger Posted - 07/12/2005 : 01:40:30
That's a fact, and I don't see that changing.
Carl Posted - 07/11/2005 : 02:16:05
Best $1 YOU ever spent! ;)
klikger Posted - 07/10/2005 : 20:34:44
The first Pixies album I owned was Bossanova; I got it at a rummage sale for $1. :) I LOVE it.

Bossanova is my Pixies fave. Between Rock Music, Cecilia Ann, The Happening and All Over the World, to me, it's their best album.

Every Pixies album is great including 'Bossanova' but I have to admit that my favorite songs are on 'Doolittle'. The Pixies are awesome.
Carl Posted - 06/24/2005 : 14:41:05
It's got a little bit of pop, maybe Dig For Fire is it's Here Comes Your Man. But it's got punk, hard rock, spacey surf, the lot!
ccuadros Posted - 06/24/2005 : 13:54:00
All the Bossanova song's are beautifull, and i don't think that it's a pop album
Carl Posted - 06/24/2005 : 13:13:59
Yeah, the intro to World is beautiful. Joey's little lead guitar has a kind of Gallic flavour, I think!
Antoinette Posted - 06/24/2005 : 13:08:49
The groove that begins All Over The World is fantastic enough to nullify any weaknesses that follow on that track ... "Hey baby ... How you doin? Can I be your boy?" Love it.

And The Happening makes me cry, it's so good.

Bossanova is wonderful.
Jamski Posted - 06/16/2005 : 04:08:41
In my opinion Tha Bossanova is more POP album. But some tracks like Rock music - hard sound song , or Hang wire are relly "dirty".
Ziggy Posted - 06/16/2005 : 02:06:51
Haha.

I love Bossanova. Genuinely beautiful music, with a real kick.
Carl Posted - 06/15/2005 : 18:16:16
FB said they used to call Is She Weird? is she dave?, because they thought it sounded so Bowie!
funtime_frank Posted - 06/15/2005 : 12:30:51
i love Bos, it and trompe are very underated albums outside of hardcore Pixies fans. I agree that all over the world is probably the worst song on it but I still like it. Again, like someone else said, I find it too hard to rank them because they are so differnt and my favourite changes with every lesson tbh.

It's [still] educational!

i dont hear the 70's punk. i can hear it more in surfer rosa than bossanova.

i read somewhere that bossanova it's a record where the pixies mix 70's punk music and the beach boys
stymie Posted - 06/14/2005 : 13:23:00

Ouch!

The Thing is the alternate ending of The Happening and not from All Over The World!

Bossanova is cooler and relaxed than Surfer or Doolittle, that's a fact and maybe why it's less appreciated by some fans.

For my part, I was really into Bossa and now, I'm more in Trompe for years because it's a high degree of achievment (songwriting, mixing, production... every aspect).

I love the others but I largely prefer the last ones.

for me all pixies albums have tracks that i heart. its just there more on doolittle, surfer, and pilgrim that i heart than there are on bossanova or tromp.

Well assuming that he made the pre show soundtrack like FB does... Malkmus likes Bossa as he played Velouria in that pre show thingy.

Also my radio station played it on my way home.

And I like it, too.

I had a friend who would pull that "Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde don't do it for me, I'm only into Surferosa and Doolittle" crap.
He would actually turn up his nose when I played Bossanova.
I feel sad for him because I continued to be amazed by and recieve enjoyment from Bossanova and Trompe le monde whereas he had to find a new band to admire and live a life of whiny hip-ocity.

To answer the question, it's because people often relate Surfer or Doolittle to a certain time in their lives of which those songs were part of the soundtrack. The departure from that early sound signifies a change in the artists' lives that may or may not have reflected a change in the listeners lives. Plus, people often feel the need for something that places them above others, usually judgement. I do it myself; every time someone mentions Maroon 5.

i think "all over the world" is the only song which is somehow crappy. it is totally overproduced and that long outro... i liked it once, but now i think it really stains the album. the lyrics are going nowhere. it would be cool without that long ending.

I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band
Black_francis_ Posted - 06/13/2005 : 05:40:47
i find it impossible to rank their albums to be honest, i love them all for different reasons. bossanova is their most interesting album and for the pixies that means its reeeeaally interesting!! and it has velouria on it of course.
the_o Posted - 06/12/2005 : 16:07:15
lets just hope they think the same and play more and more from Bossanova and Trompe

Oh, it's definetly got an ethereal beauty, and there is some crazy noisy stuff going on. It just dos'nt have the same brutal wackiness of the earlier stuff. Maybe the album covers have influenced me, somehow, weak minded fool that I am!! (It has to be said, the covers are so perfect for those albums.
billgoodman Posted - 06/11/2005 : 02:34:35
weaker songs?
Don't know
I would say that it's the record the pixies (or maybe just Frank)
reinvents themselves.
The noisyness, the one string bending, the spanish lyrics, the rawness, they had done that all before. You gotta keep moving you know. I would dare to say that there is no filler on Bossanova.

In terms of brilliant pop music I think Bossanova is the best. Finally a band that takes the surfguitar and brings it in a space that's totally new (for surf music).

God, I should write an essay about it and save the legacy of this record.

"I joined the cult of Jon Tiven/Bye!"
freakin phreak Posted - 06/10/2005 : 21:32:00
i dont like bossanova because its so much quieter than the other albums. franks voice seems so far away and quiet, i cant stand that. the songs i think are just weaker than the rest of the albums, and they butchered some early classics like "down to the well" and "is she wierd." i still prefer the bbc versions of those songs. but yeah, havalina is beautiful, and dig for fire, velouria, rock music, and allison are the only good songs on there.

It's great, but it dos'nt have that raw kick to it.
Levitated Posted - 06/10/2005 : 20:14:14
I hate that guy in the pixies documentary that says that bossanova is not a record to like for pixies hard-core fans...fuck no!!! I'm a pixies hard-core fan and bossanova is my fave album!!!

Me too. Bought it the day it came out in 1990. And I think it was a case of a lot of people looking for Doolittle 2 who were turned off by the album. People with preconceived visions of what the Doolittle follow up ought to have sounded like were the ones who called it the beginning of the end. I remember Spin giving it a great review at the time and listing it on their year end ten best albums list so it wasn't completely panned upon its initial release.

Problem is, asking here, there's bound to people springing to the album's defence straight away. Technically speaking, if you're talking critical acclaim or influence, then maybe it's not their high point.
I'm not so sure nowadays, but when I bought Bossanova, it was definitely my favourite album. But, it's not typical Pixies really, so people tend to focus on the other albums.
