Posted - 03/31/2005 : 13:33:26 I got this off pixiesmusic.com on their board...interesting.
The Roseland in Portland is hosting 4 Pixies shows in 2 nights before they head up to the Gorge at George for the Sasquatch Fest. The shows will be Thursday and Friday, May 26th & 27th. The setup for both nights is an early show at 7pm and a late show at 10pm. Tix are $40 plus service fee BS. Don't know when they go on sale.
I'm guessing that these shows probably won't have opening bands, cuz the early shows start at 7 and doors for the late show are at 9 , leaving only 2 hours max for the early show to get done in.
See monqui.com - Oregon shows - for more details. |

Posted - 04/19/2005 : 09:21:37 all of the adds and the tickets themselves (i have mine!!) still list the early shows as rarities and b-sides.. i doubt the set-lists will overlap too much. otherwise they wouldnt sell combo tickets..
anyways, another good place to stop after the shows, only a few blocks from the roseland: voodoo donuts. open 10PM to 10 AM for awesome late-nite snackage.
specialty donuts including caffeinated, nyquil, and (amazingly tasty) bacon-topped maple bar.. |

Posted - 04/15/2005 : 00:33:33 Thanks guys. I'm staying down in that area so I will be making the rounds. I'm not sure what I'm looking for either but I'll recognize it when I see it. ...everything from Roky Erickson to Bongwater, with detours to Hot Tuna and Aterciopelados. In a new town it never fails that one will stumble onto the odd ep or bootleg. |

Posted - 04/14/2005 : 22:53:35 For used stuff Everyday music on West Burnside and 13th or 14th is a pretty large selection of new and used CDs and vinyl. that's about 10 blocks from the roseland, so you COULD hoof it there and it's not TOO much of a walk. On the same walk at about 10th you'll find Ozone UK which has a bunch of cool punk rock and rock n roll stuff. Right across the street is Jackpot which has some good new and used things too, and right around this block is some good pizza (roccos) and some thai food, some zine stores, etc. There's also powells books right there if you're into finding any book you've ever set out to find. Mio gelatto is right by powells if you want gelatto.
the coast is about an hour and a half away...hope this helps! jake.

not sure what kind of stuff you're looking for music wise, but i always find great stuff at, i think its called 2nd Ave records. i try to hit it everytime i go to portland. not as big as amoeba or rasputins (i'm in oaktown), but good selection still, of cd's and vinyl. i htink this one is the best for my tastes. but there is also one called Ozone, or has ozone in the title, this is ok ithink they had a good import selection and lots of vinyl too as well as cd's. hopefully someone from portland can give more specifics on these stores for you, like if i got the names right or not and locations. |

Posted - 04/14/2005 : 02:54:29 i love the coast, seaside, beaver, cannon beach. i've been there twice, i keep wanting to go during storm season(octoberish) but never end up making it. this place looks really nice, great for a date week-end. http://www.thewavesmotel.com/waves.html
how long does it take to drive from the coast inland to portland?

Posted - 04/14/2005 : 02:46:15 I'm curious about the best local CD stores. Does Portland have places similar to Amoeba or Rasputin's in San Francisco? Thinking large, ranging rock collections, perhaps with ample used sections. Never know what you'll find in a place like that. Thanks. |

Posted - 04/13/2005 : 21:15:17 Also, the streets North of Burnside are in alphabetical order, so for example that restaurant on Glisan would be 5 blocks north of burnside. This makes it easy to get around and not get lost! |

Posted - 04/13/2005 : 21:12:03 Maybe check craigslist under tickets, some people sometimes have vouchers they can't get rid of..I don't know how transferable these are, though. As far as recommmendations, cross Burnside from the Roseland and head over to 2nd, there is Berbati's, XV, and Shanghai Tunnel. They are all cool places, check citysearch for more info. Also, Berbati's has an awesome happy hour for pre-show munching, gyros for $2 and other great deals. They are also a member of i-dine if you're into that. One other thing, for out-of-towners, just be aware that the area around the Roseland is sketchy. You'll probably be OK with the crowd, but just be careful. |

Posted - 04/11/2005 : 14:50:11 I still haven't heard confirmation on the early show yet. Last time I heard the concert announcement on the radio they were saying it was going to be b-sides and rarities.
I am sure there must be other people on the forum from the PDX area, but I thought I would start a listing of places to eat for anyone traveling. This is just a quick list I pulled from city search of places I have been and had good luck. All places are downtown area (which is where the Roseland is) and not too expensive. Please feel free to let me know if you need any other information, or if you need suggestions of things to do/see before the show.

Eating Downtown PDX:
BridgePort Brew Pub 1313 NW Marshall Portland, OR 97209 (503) 241-3612
The Scene With rustic cobblestone streets and a charming ivy-cloaked exterior, it's a surprise to open the door and find a bustling watering hole chock-full of families and locals inside. The sociable and quick servers behind the counter dish up pub classics, perfect fare for watching the game on the big screen or squirmy kids at the big family-style tables.
The Food Regulars come back for the consistent atmosphere and food. While nothing snazzy, the pizza pies are a sure thing, with combos like salami, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto-ricotta on the Fremont, and barbecued chicken, roasted peppers and Old Knucklehead-beer barbecue sauce on the Sellwood. Pass on the chilled sesame-noodle salad, which is laden with insipid chicken skewers, and choose the garlicky Caesar salad, a local fave. The uninventive but reliable hummus plate is pleasantly piled with olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta and crunchy garlic flatbread.
House of Louie ($) 331 NW Davis StPortland, OR 97209-3924 Phone: (503) 228-9898
The Scene Dramatic dragon pillars welcome you into this bustling place where dim-sum carts circulate daily. If you can't make it for dim sum during lunch hours, you can also order it off the menu anytime.
The Food For dinner, you'll find dishes that won't scare away even conservative eaters. Cantonese-style steak cubes of sirloin are saut¿ed with sweet onions and tomato sauce. Prawns are saut¿ed in spicy Mandarin sauce with green onions. Or try the Triple Crown--shrimp, barbecue pork, and sliced chicken cooked with pea pods, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts and vegetables. Noodle lovers can choose from chow mein, chow fun and noodle soups. Several types of rice soup are also available.
For Breakfast and/or Lunch: Bijou Cafe ($) 132 SW 3rd AvePortland, OR 97204-2705 Phone: (503) 222-3187
The Scene Butter-yellow walls and heavy-handed, Spanish-inspired nude paintings mesh with green-and-blue checked tablecloths and a post-soccer game crowd. A white-washed industrial ceiling and partially exposed kitchen frame a healthy gourmet menu in an unpretentious setting.
The Food Bijou offers traditional breakfast and lunch staples, but also features a daily-changing menu with seasonal dishes and chef's specialties. The classic brioche French toast features Pearl Bakery bread and is rich and creamy with strong cinnamon undertones. For lunch, try either Caesar salad, strong with fresh garlic and lemon tang, or the Bijou Burger, a one-third-pound Painted Hills beef patty dressed up with spicy, sweet housemade jalapeno chutney. Finish it all off with the legendary $5 milkshake--a smooth, frothy treat.
Pearl Bakery ($) 102 NW 9TH AvePortland, OR 97209-3304 Phone: (503) 827-0910
The Scene Bakery cases filled with goodies take center stage in this local darling. Torrential foot traffic creates a buzz of energy, while the affable service moves the line along quickly. You can, however, still relax with an espresso and pastry--if you can find a seat.
The Food Crispy, rich loaves like the Italian olive ciabatta are surefire crowd pleasers, as are the more simple "pain poolis" French loaves. Breakfast pastries are savory treats--the warm chocolate croissant and petite brioche will brighten even a rainy Portland morning. The smoked turkey breast sandwich with Muenster cheese, creamy Dijon and roasted red peppers is a lunch standout, while the roasted eggplant sandwich with sun-dried tomato pesto, organic greens and basil is a tasty vegetarian alternative. Finish up with a slice of moist, heavenly chocolate chiffon cake or indulge in a spicy ginger cookie.
Pure Scene and Fun: The Roxy ($) 1121 SW Stark StPortland, OR 97205-2309 Phone: (503) 223-9160
In Short Tall booths, signed celebrity posters and a jukebox loaded with everything from metal to house decks out this all-night novelty diner. Big, bookish menus are full of treats, including a breakfast menu with pancake offerings named after celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Dolly Parton, depending on how stacked you like them. The burgers are huge--Boxx's burger is loaded with bacon, mushrooms and Tillamook cheddar. Sandwiches include the Paul Reubens Reuben, slippery with spicy meat.
Byways Cafe ($) 1212 NW Glisan StPortland, OR 97209-3015 Phone: (503) 221-0011
The Scene Kitschy and fun, Byways feels like a blast from the past with its vinyl banquettes, 3-D viewfinders, friendly servers and soda fountain. The crowd is mixed: 20-somethings nursing weekend hangovers, young families and Pearlites converge for hearty, satisfying breakfasts and lunches.
The Food The Pearl's own greasy spoon transcends diner fare by improving on the classics. At breakfast, try the Mt. Rushmore Hash, a mix-mash of potatoes, spicy corned beef, melted cheese and hot peppers. Amaretto-infused French toast is pure indulgence; creamy, aromatic brioche topped with honey butter is well worth the 15-minute wait. For lunch, attempt the juicy, 1/3-pound hamburger with tasty homemade potato salad, or the Crater Lake Cobb salad which takes a twist, done with spinach instead of lettuce and doused in crumbly blue cheese. Don't miss the sweet treats: Chewy brownies, piping-hot scones and cookies have a loyal following.
Bars Cassidy's Restaurant 1331 SW Washington St Portland, OR 97205 (503) 223-0054
The Scene Vintage, dark-wood refrigerators and leaded glass present a facade of gravity and authority in a bar better known for late-night madness. Cassidy's, home of the last of last calls, is a favorite among bar and restaurant people. Servers are speedy, knowledgeable and friendly. Drinks are strong and arrive at your table promptly. There's a revolving selection of local brews on tap (always served in chilled pint glasses), a focused and reasonably priced wine list, and an impressive array of brown liquors.
The Food The fare is startlingly good--although with Cassidy's strong identification as a bar, it tends to get overlooked. Next time you're there for a nightcap, at least try the steamed mussels in chipotle, coconut milk and vegetable broth: Suave, tender mussels collide brilliantly with a smoky, rich and aggressively spicy broth.
Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery 206 SW Morrison St Portland, OR 97204-3107 (503) 796-2739
In Short As night falls, so does the age of the clientele, and the bar is taken over by grown-up Greek system alumni. The menu is a mix of standards (nachos and burgers), and more trendy dishes (sesame calamari, seared ahi tuna). Entrees like fried chicken and ribs are massive. House-brewed beers are available to go in moonshine-style jugs. Try the Black Diamond stout, a dark, smooth brew with a hint of licorice.
Greek Cusina 404 SW Washington St Portland, OR 97204 (503) 224-2288
The Scene The giant purple octopus mascot affixed to the outside of this busy downtown spot makes it hard to miss. Downstairs, families are surrounded by kitschy murals of faraway isles, while upstairs, hell-raising bachelorette parties dance the night away to the sound of breaking plates and pop music.
The Food The Greek standards are all here, but many taste as though they've been around since Plato was pontificating. Pricey main dishes like moussaka filled with undercooked eggplant, sawdust-dry pork souvlaki kebobs, and pasticcio--bland, layered pasta with little moisture of any kind, should be avoided. Stick with the decent stuffed grape leaves in lemony sauce, run-of-the-mill lamb gyros, and crispy, fried calamari. Finish things off with a rich honey and nut-filled baklava diamond and then head upstairs to see the real reason this place is packed nightly.

Posted - 04/09/2005 : 12:45:25 Me too. Really wish one didn't have to go through the complete ordering cycle each time, to include re-entering credit card info, for all four shows in my case, with the added pleasure of paying four separate order and "convenience" fees, but they say I got the tickets. It's a fair exchange. With luck this out-of-towner will be a Roseland Theater veteran by the end of May. |
