Ok So i just caught the letterman performance. And by"just" caught i mean that i waited all afternoon anticipating the one song. I had, like many others expected them to play the warren zevon cover but they played Monkey Gone To Heaven. It was good. Not great..just good. Paul played keyboards and added some weird part throughout the chorus which sort of ruined it for me. It was sort of a rave type light techno riff. I didnt like it too much but i can look past that. The other thing i took notice to was that Charles literally did not open his eyes during the whole song! I thought that was actually kind of neat. Maybe he's not used to the glasses he was wearing. Anyways it was a pretty cool thing to watch as i did not seem them on their warm up tour. So, as to create a point for the thread, what did everyone think?

Decent performance...you can kinda tell they're just in a routine. It's kinda hard to get into a song when you play it every night, yunno?

was David wearing leather pants?

i downloaded the PixiesOnLettermanSmall video... but does SMALL mean that there is another video in higher definition? ... and where can we find it?
thankx

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not...

...but after the second time I saw it, there's a shot of Lovering at the end of the song where he stands up, claps his hands together twice and spreads his arms in the way a magician would after an amazing slight of hand trick. Classic.

It was my favorite part of the performance.

The thing is: They (the pixies) did not try to please us (the die hard fans). Ok, they (I mean he) may have their (his) reasons, I do not criticize...
They played a good song, catchy almost popular one. Did they try to convince new people? Tv is the occasion... Do you think, beside the fact they played a "potential hit" that they did what they had to do to convince new people in term of performance? (That's an actual question because I have not seen it).
From these facts and questions what objective conclusion do you draw?

off topic: anyone see an interview with Frank on MTV some years ago somewhere on the French Riviera? He also played You Ain't Me and another song (I don't remember which). Before that the interviewer asks among other questions:
(something like) "So, what kind of music do you listen to nowadays"
"Loud, man..."
The interviewer tries again about the artists he listens to and Frank says "Ziggy"
The interviewer: "Oh, Ziggy Marley?"

i saw.
the interviewer was a young german "Boris", i think
he also asked "How was it touring with U2?" and Frank said something like "I was flying the jet" Boris said "Oh, u were the pilot?" And Frank said "no no, during the U2 show I was flying the jet"
something like this...
also beed asked if he like Dance music... and Frank said that he likes to get on the floor...
It was obvious Boris had no clue who is Frank, and quite sad actually.
It was not a unique interview for those days, so we should greatly appreciate that these days if u work in the media u can't be that ignorant about Pixies.

This sounds hilarious! Anybody know how this can be had?

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

Maybe I was kinda harsh. I've never ever seen'em live on t.v. or anywhere else so this was my live intro to'em. They all looked really nervous. I guess I'd be too in front of all them lights and cameras. They ought to change their name to Three baldys and a Soccer mom. I never thought Kim was that cute but she looked pretty adorable here. Oh and how about Franks leather trail-duster coat. That thing was huge!

Floop, I have chewed Hawken in my life....but the last time was probably at least 10 years ago. Nasty stuff. I am not a tabbacco chewer, just did it for a few months when I couldn't smoke in HS. No longer a smoker either.

i don't know if i'd say monkey is overrated as opposed to overplayed - its one of the few pixies songs that i've heard charles do more than once w/o the pixies

Thanks for posting the link to the mpeg pixie punk.

I thought it was a good performance....and I don't think Paul over did the keyboards. It was a little addition and just provided a nice seperation from the album version which I've already heard too many times.

I also agree that Monkey is an overrated Pixies tune.....wouldn't make my top 20 Pixies songs.
adda flea Posted - 12/16/2004 : 08:28:36
its hard for me to watch such a subdued performance and have a lot of positive things to say about it, although even a subdued pixies performance towers above the crap most other bands do. I just want to see Frank put his heart into it and go off.
JustJeff Posted - 12/16/2004 : 07:27:59
thanks pixie punk for posting the mpeg.
i just watched it and having had time to
reflect, it was a very nice performance.
laid back, confident, professional.
The pixies are world class musicians.

I'm not a big "Monkey" fan but I quite liked it.
It's a good song after all. It's just that it's SO overrated.

I havent seen this yet but i wish they would have just played bone machine as loud as they could. As far as this type of performance, i remenber a personal favorite of mine which is They Might Be Giants doing 'Birdhouse' with doc Severenson and his orchestra on the Tonight Show.... It is cool to see your fave bands jam with other people ya know. well mi gonna go watch this/download it. later.p

If Jesus Christ came back today and saw what was being done in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.
Manny Posted - 12/15/2004 : 22:32:31
yeh that wasn't so bad at all! the keyboard was very similar to the strings on the album.. the mix was maybe slightly too loud but it wasn't too bad, i thought. kim is such a star.
DruggedBunny Posted - 12/15/2004 : 20:02:14
Well, seems I'm one of the few who really liked it! That keyboard part is most definitely on the album version (with real strings though).

Kim dressed like a soccer mom...that really sums it up in a nice, funny way. Anyhow, I liked it. Just for the fact I got to see them on TV. As for the song selection, I am just so grateful they didn't play "Here Comes your Man". Loved Charles' vocal is that performance.

Did i mention that Pixies were on TV??? So cool!

The part that Paul played is in the song. You can hear it in every chorus. Its strings being plucked and he played it just like the recording. They must have given him the music cause it sounded just like the recording. You have to turn it up pretty loud to hear it on the record but its there.
slaveish Posted - 12/15/2004 : 14:16:15
I doubt the Pixies asked Paul to play. It's probably just what you do if you appear and are asked by David Letterman.
Bathsheeba Posted - 12/15/2004 : 14:00:07
HAHAHA..Thats gold! I vote the pixies do that rendition of ziggy stardust!

Charlie played guitar, jamming good with Dave and Joey
and that Kim from Ohio. he didn't played it left hand
But knew many bars
Became the special man, when he was in that Pixies band

Charlie really sang, wide closed eyes and quite no hairdo
Like some (lucky)cat from Japan, he could lick 'em by screaming
He could leave 'em to hang (wire)
Came on so loaded man, well hung and Frank Black tan.

So where was the passion while the saucers tried to break our balls
Just the beer light to guide Kim,
So we bitched about his fans and should we crush his huge hands?

Charlie played for time, jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass, he was the nazz
With God given big ass
He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar

Hanging on with his ego Charlie sucked up into his mind
Like a preacher messiah
When the kids had killed the man he had to break up the band.

Oh yeah
Oooh
Charlie played guitar!!!!!!

As Frank once said ...The majority of people are just like, `Play the monkey song!' ''! So I think that explains why he choose that one

Why *not* play Monkey? It the Letterman show after all. Casual listeners will say "I remember them!" and new listeners will say "Who were they again? Maybe I can find a greatest hits at Best Buy ... "

Paul looked really douchey in that clip.

I´ve seen it, I´ve seen it!
I won´t tell anything bad about it, not even why did they played the mokey song! They are great and they were looking fabulous as always!
And Frank with that glasses...he looked handsome!
