Stolen from a critic? not quite, but "what a shitty zeppelin ripoff" was my reaction after hearing about 30 seconds of sonic shit. As far as IQ, I know plenty of high IQ people who have perfectly awful taste (in music etc...), so you could very well be a mensa member for all I know. |

I love frank's music, f all the bullshit on this board written by people who actually are concerned about how bad the sound was or how many people there were. I'm there to see frank and have a good time. Glad I didn't go with any of the pissy shits here. Don't listen to any of the crap on this board, every pixies show is great. i apologize if what i said sounded too harsh. there are lots of things i like about Orange County. just, growing up there and being a digruntled youth, you learn to despise it. kind of like someone who grows up in a small town and wants to get out. not that Orange County is small, but, you know?
i have friends there, and my family is there (like i said). and i like visiting now, when i go. i just didn't like the whole jock/republican/bad-boy-sticker/huge truck culture that was there. but there are good things too.
they do boast the best Mexican food place i have still had, to this day: Taqueria De Anda. that's something.
and some good bands came from there.

I was at the Glass House too and that was nice. I thought Kim's bass was very muddy at that show though..... Irvine definately had great energy. Plus, we had great seats in the orchestra and it was free! So I cant complain. Other than the Mars Volta sucked ass! Oh and my friend posted on pixiesmusic about the santa barbara show as well and how the crowd was just way fucking lame! Like I said, we almost got into a fight with some chicks and some pregnant woman and her boyfriend or whatever because we we standing, dancing and shaking our heads a rock concert? |

i wasn't at that show so i can't comment about their performance.
but for me nothing will compare to the Glass House show. i feel honored and privlidged to have attended. the anticipation.. the intimacy of the venue, and the explosiveness of their performance were umatched at any other show i saw.
i went to: Spokane, Glass House, Coachella and Santa Barbara.
i agree with Mike W though. i think Frank feeds off the crowd.

Glass House was a great experience, San Diego had the best setlist, but Irvine was where they played the best. I'd rank it alongside any of the greatest, most intimate and intense Frank Black or Breeders live experiences I've had simply because they were so damn ON as a band. And, they succeeded IN SPITE OF playing in a potentialy shitty venue to a potentially indifferent audience. Of course I'm jealous that they were reportedly mashing five or six different songs together at a time the previous night. |

from what I could tell from the signs in the venue, the irvine show was sponsored by indie 103. the atrocious opening band (I can't really stress enough how fucking godawful the mars volta were) exhorted the crowd to shoot jed the fish in the head. |

plus, that concert (i didn't go) was sponsored by KROQ. i mean, what do you expect from a stadium full of KROQ listeners.
slavish - it is mellow here, but then so many of the best rock bands (and punk rock bands) came from here. it's paradoxical.

I saw them at Irvine and I thought it sounded better than the Greek. There was a lot of bass at the Irvine show from where I was standing but it was 10 x's louder than the Greek. I saw em at Santa Barbara the next night as well and that sound was somewhat messed up. Joey and Charles were either not loud enough or just not in the mix in certain sections. It was drums, bass and vocals through out most of the show. The crowd at SB sucked ass! Ppl were telling us to sit down, so we almost got into a fight(which is the last thing we wanted). We just wanted to enjoy our favorite band for the last time. Charles didnt really look into it that night either. I really think he feeds off of the crowd, so if they were not into it, neither was he.... The cool thing was we did have backstage passes that day, so it balanced out. |

I'm in total agreement that Irvine Meadows (anyone remember when it was called that?) is a crappy venue, always has been, always will be. I haven't seen a show there in 15 years and wouldn't have bothered to see any other band there besides the Pixies. With those low expectations (and the extremely low quality of the opening act) it was easy for the Pixies to blow me away. Plus, as stated before, the sound kicked ass over any of the fall shows I've seen.

I think you put it just right Anaz, Irvine was a sucky energy-sapping venue. The band was fine, sound was good, and though I heard a weird blip occasionally like someone missed their cue,I didn't dwell on it. The show just didn't gel as well as I would have liked. |

Well, there wasn't a "mosh pit" at all. It was all seating, all the way up to the front. The area right directly in front of the stage was all seats. Granted the crowd was about 10 times more vocally enthusisatic for MV (I took great pleasure in getting on my cellphone after they finished and describing them as a "Santana cover band" loudly, to anyone in earshot) but it's just kind of a sucky, energy-sapping venue, and I thought their performance more than transcended that. I saw them at the freaking Glass House, for god's sake, and I would rather have seen them ANYWHERE but Verizon, but somehow, I still think that musically, Irvine was the better show. |

Oh for pete's sake. Don't give me that stupid attitude. I am not some philistine. Having a moshpit or surf area does not make or break a show. It is merely indicative of the attitude of the crowd. I was trying to convey the fact that this was a pretty sedate crowd. And that affected the way the music was received.
Even Frank said during the show, "Does it freak anyone else out when the crowd is totally silent between songs? That freaks me out a little."
The sound quality may have been good, but for whatever reason, there was not that give-take between the band and the crowd that can give a show it's own electricity, create it's own energy. Instead it seemed there more of an energy drain at this show - the band creating and sending energy and the crowd receiving it but not giving back. It wasn't intentional. And I'm sure if you were in the fourth row it was a different feeling than if you were in a high section at the top of the amphitheater.
All I really know is the show was totally different from the show I saw in September. That does not mean it was a bad show, just that my expectations were probably too high. |

the sound up front could not have been any better...
10 times better than the Greek, i left the Greek completely disappointed and i left Irvine completely astonished.

I feel bad saying this, but I think I was a bit disappointed. First off let me say I saw them in Berkeley on 9/25 and I thought it was one of the best concerts I'd ever seen. So that set the bar pretty high.
So it could have been my high expectations - or it could have been the venue, my seat in a nosebleed section, fatigue from the flight/drive, the freezing weather, or some combination of the above.
The sound quality was good and Frank was belting it out as well as I've ever heard him, but I could have sworn someone else in the band kept missing their cue. The set started off slow - it was almost as though they reversed the encore material - and that set the tone for the night.
There was no one surfing, very few people dancing, and some various light on the stage was blinding to us up in the high seats. There was no mosh pit and people were SITTING DOWN during the show. I thought that was strange. It was a really weird crowd.
I am fully aware that whatever disappointment I felt was probably my own fault. And even though I didn't think it was the concert of a lifetime, it was still fun to hear them playing together. So this is not a complaint, just an assessment of one person's experience. |

Definately the best of the three I've seen this year. I was fourth row, and the sound was amazing. Fun to see them play Planet of Sound, and Head On shook the whole place. The crowd did seem a bit in lax-mode, but that's cool. The Pixies churned out classic after classic with break-neck speed, and the "song envelopes" were totally awesome! (and her car is bitchin') The individuals themselves seemed in perfect form, both musically and spiritually. there wasn't as much banter as usual, but their level of professionalism spoke for itself. Charles seems to have lost a little weight! I remember at Coachella, he looked like a man about to die! Kim is still keeping with her short hair, and she also seemed not to be as heavy. Joey just looks cool period. And Dave is still wearing those white Levi's!
The Mars Volta, as everyone seems to be in agreement on, were right up there with the worst of the worst openers I've ever seen. Repulsive, insipid, and dry. On an interesting note, a good 5% of the audience left (!) after the Mars Vulva...er...Volta, which proves they have a good following. Who knows. Maybe in 2021 they will be the inexplicable Alt-band phoenix-rising.
All in all, a night In Heaven. Everything WAS fine!
