Here's a quote from the man himself regarding this whole Nirvana mess:

"The 'Cobain connection'

They're the standard interview-ending questions. Anything we've missed? Anything you want to add?

"Yeah," Frank Black says with a sardonic chuckle. "I don't think enough people have been asking me about how it feels to have been enjoyed by Kurt Cobain. I think people have really overlooked that fact. It's sad. It's sad."

That's been the lazy journalistic shorthand on The Pixies for years now - the late singer of Nirvana was a big fan, thus The Pixies somehow created Cobain's obsession with the soft/loud dynamics of music.

Never mind that long before he heard his first Pixies song, Cobain was obsessed with Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, which were no slouches in the soft/loud dynamics department themselves. You'd think the fact that Cobain wrote an early song called Aero Zeppelin would be a tip-off as well.

Black is honored, he says, but enough."

So there you have it, folks. That's from last week's Rocky Mountain News interview.

yeah, i also hated those cheapo unofficial T shirts that were knockin' around the web at the start of the reunion that had a big 'THE PIXIES' on them, it just made cheap even cheaper...

and I know, one mistake could have been slip of the pen/toungue/keyboard but the fact that it was followed up by the wrong year made it worth posting!!!
Cheeseman1000 Posted - 09/30/2004 : 04:23:02
I like that in that quote you've not only got the song from the wrong album, but the album from the wrong year. Also being picky, "The" is not necessary before "Pixies".

Now c'mon, even the smallest bit of research....

This is insane!
It's almost like they're talking about a completely different band. There's not a true fact in the whole article.

I don't think so. Cobain has become the 90's musical icon. And he has a better image to sell than these nerdy dressed guys. And remember, everybody knows who is Pat Boone.

If you liked hard rock and you had never heard of them until now, you'd think that theyre the best band ever!!!!

Heh, sorry about that...
Nirvana's okay. They are after all the sound of my teenage years, no denying that.

Then of course some will complain about people not givin Nirvana enough credit. So it goes.

That is pretty bad,and...
...Now, The Pixies have, after divulging to MTV that they've been secretly jamming together for years...
When did they divulge that?

I must admit that I'm guilty of that Nirvana quoting. But none of my friends have never listened to the Pixies but sure they've heard about Nirvana, so it's the easy way I found to introduce them into it.

But IMHO opinion, Nirvana has nothing to do when it gets compared with the Pixies. Anyways, my sister says the same sentence changing the bands names

"They're so bloody, bloody, bloody happy!!!"
Itchload Posted - 09/28/2004 : 16:05:39
It's really stupid because there are probably 30000 people out there who've never given the Pixies a chance because they simply assume they sound just like Nirvana. When I hear a band sounds like another band, I'm immediately dismissive.

also it's pre-supposing that EVERYONE on earth loves Nirvana.

Fuck Kurt! I'm glad he's dead!
Levitated Posted - 09/27/2004 : 16:14:05
Nirvana reviews should add how The Pixies influenced them and not Pixies reviews quoting Nirvana at least in that way Nirvana fans will know who The Pixies were/are. Anyway I love both bands so it's cool to me but I know that Pixies fans who don't like Nirvana is annoying to read the ripped off thing all the time, and maybe even for fans of both bands is quite annoying reading the same quotation and yeah now it's annoying to me too. Damn!!
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 09/27/2004 : 15:25:02
Yeah and two of The Beatles are dead so...........

Even though you were joking LBF, it is true, this complaint has been made on here as much as 'said link between the two bands' has been mentioned.

Help me! He keeps making me post!

ElevatorLady Posted - 09/26/2004 : 05:32:15
Hehe, I've used the Beatles analogy myself once! You know, me jumping aroud, saying "The Pixies are getting back together, the Pixies are getting back together, yay!", and after the uninterested "0h"'s from my friends I say "Don't you know what's going on? How big this is? It's like... It's like... It's as big as if the Beatles got togehter again!"
Of course, if the Beatles (somehow) got togehter again, they would surely suck (just too much time has passed). And Pixies surely don't.

I agree, KSR, I just tell people that they're one of the most influential bands from the late 80s/early 90s...then they look at me weird. Like I was wearing an odd hat.

I've had a couple people say "aren't they getting back together?" Yes, they've done that, I replied, I saw one of their shows--it was f'n amazing. It was as big as if the Beatles woulda gotten back together. "

then that look again.

chineselover Posted - 09/23/2004 : 17:15:10
I assume most writers of such articles take into consideration that there are many readers who may never heard of the pixies but probably heard of nirvana.
KimStanleyRobinson Posted - 09/23/2004 : 14:52:43
Has to be a first, cheese.

I've been guilty of using the analogy to try to make people understand who the Pixies are...ok, I did it once...and I said it really fast...and then the conversation ended and I hung my head in shame. Now I just say "Its an alternative group from the late 80's that broke up in 92 and got back together in April and I'm going to see them in October and you wouldn't understand anyway and yeah, I'm nuts and fuck you."

Ok, the 'fuck you' part didn't really happen.

The reason they're doing it is to try to give the idiotic masses some framework to hang this new "Pixies" concept on. They're afraid of...something - not being able to describe them?

Catwalk Hat Syndrome in action.

You see this crazy hat on a catwalk model and you think, nobody would ever wear that. Yet, a few months later a watered down model is available that is the hit of the season - its the same style but much less difficult to grasp, hence mass acceptance.

Same thing with the Pixies/Nirvana. I wonder if thats the first time the Pixies have been compared to a hat.

It's almost impossible to read any article about them without the 'Kurt Cobain claims 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was inspired by The Pixies, or something similar. FB himself has claimed several times that he dos'nt feel that Nirvana ripped them off, and that he dos'nt really see the connection; He has also notted that Nirvana are more melodic sounding and that The Pixies were always a little bit too strange to gain mass acceptance.
PsychicTwin Posted - 09/23/2004 : 09:25:11
the "Obligatory Nirvana-Pixies Journalistic Tie-In", Section XII, Article 9 states that "Any journalist writing an article on the Pixies must mention a) Kurt Cobain, b) Nirvana, c) or both in conjunction with a) being influenced by, b) ripping off, c) being directly descendent from the Pixies and their musical sound...Amendment: This mention must be bookmarked by the notion that the Pixies are 'the godfathers of alernative rock' and that they 'influenced countless bands' since the 90's"

Journalists really annoy the hell out of me sometimes.
