Hi. Just to clarify, it was not "an album with him playing with the Beatles". It was recorded with the "The Pete Best Combo". It's a lighthearted play on words, but ultimately, Beatles fans that were expecting a compilation of Beatles' tunes were dissapointed.

I've enjoyed Ringo's drumming but now I'm actually curious to listen to Pete Best's.

Relax, fellow music lovers........Just goofing around re: Ringo (as I'm wont to do...goofing, that is) I love him. Just wanted to do a "Pete Best fired" kinda thing vis a vis "Kim S" situation. Holla!

hahahaha

Not true at all, but that made me chuckle on a very shitty day.

THANKS, FLOOP!

......and in came Ringo (ugly as sin and a so-so drummer)

Ringo's an absolutely phenomenal drummer, and an incredibly important component of the Beatles' sound.

He's gotten a bad rap for years, and it is almost completely unfounded.

He's got soul, empathy, chops and excellent time. Plus, his feel is extremely unique.

That makes him one of the hardest drummers for other players to accurately emulate (no matter how talented they are), which is the ultimate, true test of his skills.

Nobody sounds like Ringo. Especially in the studio.

Most serious drummers who have paid attention to his work will tell you the same thing, straight up.

Not trying to argue, just sticking up for one of the most unjustly and routinely maligned pop musicians of the last 60 years...

Yeah, the Beatles without Ringo would be like The Who without Moon. Unthinkable.
frankblackphx Posted - 12/24/2013 : 09:43:24
The truth is, at the time Ringo was the hottest drummer in Liverpool playing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. The Beatles desperately wanted him. The Ringo not being good enough all started because of George Martin bringing in his own studio drummer for their first session.

Plus he either 'officially' created or popularized that backward-fill thing, didn't he?

Shades of how the BEATLES fired PETE BEST.Lennon wanted him out (too popular with the ladies and too fuckin GOOD on the drums). They had Brian Epstein do the dirty work. haha......and in came Ringo (ugly as sin and a so-so drummer) just the way John liked it.

Anyway, I, too, look forward to new Muffs music and Paz' legs
Jason Posted - 12/23/2013 : 12:07:52
Kim Shattuck seems to be over it. So, I'm over it.

My deepest thought about all of this: Hopefully, this just means a Muffs tour next year after their new album is out.
sdon Posted - 12/23/2013 : 11:56:13
I like my Pixies to be clumsy, imperfect, and maybe even assholes
Only then can they turn shit into gold
Something went wrong with Kim S., but hey it already was a miracle they made new material and toured with such enthusiasm AND professionalism.
I may have been too quick to think Kim would be a Pixie for many years. But I don't regret at all their September shows, it was a tremendous experience.

Dude is arguing semantics. If she wasn't IN the band they shouldn't have let her attend magazine photo shoots.

Future bass players should be made to play behind the amp stacks if they're not IN the band.
Jamie Posted - 12/23/2013 : 10:50:51
That's the thing, Kim is coming across as friendly and open and the Pixies are coming across as bullshitty in a publicist-managed kind of way.

Like this thing with her contract only running through December. I'm sure that's technically true, but they seem to be trying to imply that this was the plan all along, which is ridiculous to anyone paying attention. You don't rehearse three times a week for seven or eight months (as Kim said on that podcast) for a three month tour. Especially when that tour is going to continue and you have to scramble to get a replacement up to speed over Christmas. Plus if their intention was really to only have her through December they would have said something to that effect at the outset to avoid a situation like this.

I mean, I get that this post-Kim Deal transition is tricky, and I absolutely understand why they'd want to have it handled by professionals. I think most people would agree that Frank Black's solo career was hurt by the poor handling of the original Pixies breakup. I don't know, maybe it comes across differently to fans who are less plugged in, but to me it doesn't seem like those professionals are doing a very good job. I don't even care that they fired Kim Shattuck that much, actually I think they need someone with a sweeter singing voice. But the handling of this whole thing has kind of dampened my enthusiasm.

It is a bit stupid that the whole jumping in to the crowd thing was mentioned in passing and people have, because it's the only bit of knowledge they have, assumed that's the sole reason she's gone.

Then he added "fact: we planing on announcing her departure in a timely and appropriate manner"

(also deleted)

first tweet was: "fact, she wasn't fired for this reason" (jumping into the crowd) "Fact, the day after our last show we all flew home. Fact, she hired only thru Dec '13"
picpic Posted - 12/23/2013 : 07:41:01
I think Joey just twitted (then deleted ? I can't find it anymore) a tweet to the muffs regarding KS contract which expired in December and saying she was just hired for that period.

kim posted a photo of the 3 male pixies a few days ago on her instagram account saying "i had fun. thanks for the adventure." responding to comments from followers about the photo she also said the following, "you all are so sweet! i don't need anyone to hate on em. i wish em well. they have a ton of cool tunes that i was super happy to play. it's all good. did they deal with it ideally? no. but it was a good run. there is a lot of behind the scenes bullshit that i'm too polite to tell so there ya go."

That wasn't Kim Shattuck, that was Ali Koehler.

That is something that would have come out of KD's mouth circa 1994.

I listened to the podcast (she's not "interviewed" in it, exactly--the mood is more of a "hang out").

Some tidbits I caught:

She was approached about playing bass in the Pixies in January last year.
The Pixies manager is kind of strange, according to Kim.
She doesn't know why she was let go, but she has a theory that she doesn't want to talk about (yet, at least) and the theory has nothing to do with her, she says.
Her "announcement" of being let go from the Pixies was an intentional dig at the Pixies' manager. What's one thing that would annoy him? Information that he can't control.
There's no friction between her and Frank ("he's not the problem," she says) and she throws that out in a way that sounded sincere to me.

In conclusion, I don't know what to think and only care in the sense that I'm a longtime fan of both Frank and Kim Shattuck. In the end, I'm always just looking forward to more new music.

Confirmed! The Pixies do have the dumbest manager in the industry. Where did Frank find this clown? Fired from a Lady Gaga tour?

I imagine there was some behaviour on the part of Kim S. that didn't sit well with the band, probably nothing major but things clearly didn't feel right. Granted though, those are strange words from their manager.
