Posted - 09/13/2013 : 06:56:31 I've probably got a slightly different take on this to most as I've been away from the forum for quite some time. From memory, there were some very 'excitable' posters on the forum back in 03 and 04....and I think the common motivation was one of provocation. I'm not sure if pot can be labelled as a deliberate 'provoker' as I've only read a few of the recent posts and, in any case, pot post dates most of the time I've spent on this forum (ie 2007 onwards). Saying that, you do need people on the forum to 'bite' or there is no obvious provocation.........and someone will always bite!
I am sensing a little bit of righteous indignation though (if that's the right word) from quite a few on here regarding ep1 if one does not agree that it is an excellent release. Maybe that's lit pot's blue touch paper? I remain unconvinced that all of the new tracks are high quality material but we are all entitled to opinions. After all is only art. For example, I can gaze at a Caravaggio in a gallery, admire the quality but ultimately be unmoved whereas I would get a rush of blood looking at a Picasso or Hockney or Miro.
I suppose lots of people are like this in real life but maybe it's super concentrated on an interweb forum. |

Posted - 09/11/2013 : 13:24:50 I have no fight in me when it comes to clashing music opinions. I always avoid arguments about 100% subjective matters, such as music taste, simply on the grounds that it's boring and guaranteed to go nowhere. I know what I like. You're not going to change my mind and, for that matter, I'm not going to change your mind. And even if we could do that (which, in most cases, we can't), so what? It's not important.
Pot is not disliked for his opinions. Other posters have made negative comments about the new Pixies music and gotten no or minimal response. (This really isn't a fanboy forum. Negative opinions about Frank's Nashville records and Grand Duchy are abundant here.)
Pot is disliked because he has a narcissistic need to turn every thread about the new music into a thread about HIS disappointment. He can't just say "I don't like this record" and then move on with his life. He needs to repeat the same opinion dozens of times a day and respond to every bit of "flame bait" thrown at him. He dislikes the new music, yet he's the most prolific poster here on the the topic. In the end, it's a plea for attention and there's nothing attractive about a person like that.
If he's taking a break from the forum, that's the most grown-up thing I've seen him do. |

Posted - 09/08/2013 : 11:02:15 Agreed. I'm glad Pot's around to nag about the quality of the songs, even if I don't agree with almost anything he says. It's normal for a FB forum to have a bit of a slanted opinion about something the man releases, especially when it's being bashed by some other sources.
That never stopped this forum from criticizing some of FB albums (Honeycomb FMRM or NSE come to mind), though, so it's never been just mindless fanboy praise in here.

Posted - 09/08/2013 : 06:39:36 Sorry man, but I'm sick of seeing you doing a series of big dramatic posts followed by yourself writing something like "Grow up". It is incredibley childish. Nobody cares that you don't like the album. What people find annoying is how indignant you are about it. I agree with Brian, it's not something worth getting so upset about. If you don't like it fine, just don't spend your time trying to convince others why they shouldn't like it. To follow your beer analogy - you are not just disliking a beer and writing a mental note not to drink it again, you are having a hissy fit over how bad the beer is, fixating on it, and going into bars in which people are drinking that same beer and bitterly trying to ruin their enjoyment of it. In your own words, "grow up".

OK, if you really must know what I do when I buy a beer that I don't like the taste. I do something really radical and make a note in my head never to buy that particular brand again.

So you don't make a mental note to hang around in bars where you know that beer is served and moan at the people who are drinking and enjoying it? Because that's exactly what you're doing here. And it doesn't seem very grown up to me.

Posted - 09/08/2013 : 05:23:57 Unbelievable pot. Do you flip your shit every time you buy something you don't like? I can just see you raising holy hell when you rent a movie you don't like, biting your remote in half and throwing your lazy boy out the front window. If your Big Mac isn't up to snuff, do you pile drive the cashier?
Baby, that's art. I have a crate of CD's in the attic that I paid good money for that I can't stand. You know what I did? Nothing. I said that sucks, and put it away and moved on. I really loved the first 2 Weezer Albums. Everything after that was pretty much crap to my ears, so ya know what? I don't listen to them. And I'm not going bald worrying about how Rivers Cuomo pissed in my ear as I plot my revenge.

I disagree. For the artifically inflated prices they were charging for this new release online I think the least we should expect in return are decent songs, and ones that sound a lot more like 'actual Pixies' songs than filler tracks off the latest FB solo release.
I say we, of course I mean the 5,000 who bought copies. So in that sense I, and everyone else who didn't also buy a digital copy are technically owed precisely fuck all. But had they been any good, and had this been on general release on CD for £3 in HMV I might have considered buying a copy to add to my collection.
As it transpires though, and thanks to the wonders of modern technology I was spared the trauma of having to part with what little cash I have right now for a record that ultimately would have disappointed me, like back in the 90s. |

Look, I have favorites and non-favorites like anyone else, i just don't see the point in being so upset that a band you like has changed. If I had asked the forum when it started in 2002, "Hey, would you like new Pixies songs?" The answer would've been an overwhelming yes.
People and bands change, and they change in odd and interesting ways. The reunion tours were very much rooted in Pilgrim/Surfer/Doolittle era - these recordings, sonically, are more in line with Bossa/Trompe. That's an unexpected change. More emphasis on the speak/shout singing of the early stuff, with the sonics of the latter stuff - that is certainly not what i would expect.
I wish that everyone loved everything, but that's not the way it is. I just don't understand the anger and vitriol i'm reading here - musicians don't owe you shit. Enjoy it or don't, and get upset about things worth getting upset about.

FUCK NO. Are you mad? Girl leaves band, frontman replaces her by his wife. Yeah this will surely work.
I don't think TBR sounds like the Pixies at all. A harsher sound doesn't make a Pixies song. Reminds me of a shitty review of Show Me Your Tears by a shitty French mag, where they basically said it sucked because it didn't sound like the Pixies, "except Massif Centrale". Same shit we've been reading for the last 20 years.
