Kim Deal has quit the Pixies. On Friday (June 14), the iconic band's three remaining members issued the following statement:
We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Well, it's my turn...
I didn't know about Kim's departure until yesterday. I am very disconnected from news and the world in general, especially news media because it's so full of crap, and I don't come here often either. So I just learned about this yesterday and... I had a pretty strange reaction to it:
I WAS RELIEVED.
I used to think that the Pixies without Kim wouldn't be the same, but something happened inside me and instead I just thought,
Thank God!!!! About Freaking Time!
I guess it was from all the tension built up over a number of years, I don't know how many.
Don't get me wrong, I love Kim as an artist, I can't even decide whether I like Frank or the Breeders/Amps better, screw all of you who can't get the genius of Title TK, and I always thought that BF should be more reasonable and let the woman write songs too, but...
dude, that wasn't working. Like, at all. It was stifled, it was smothered, it was halted, and it would be killed eventually. It was ugly and it kept us looking the other way because it was so cringeworthy.
Obviously, BF hates her guts, has been hating her for decades, she has to go. Should have gone more than 20 years ago. Away with the gridlock already.
Then I saw the Pixies released a new song already, then I thought, That's what I'm talking about!
You see, when they released Bam Thwok, I was shocked. Shocked, I say. I really did no longer have a single drop of hope of ever listening to a new Pixies song again. That was like science fiction to me. Unbelievable. But when I heard about Bag Boy, I wasn't surprised at all. Because it was crystal clear to me: once Kim is gone, of course this ship is gonna sail. Kim is out, new song is here, totally makes sense. No wonder whatsoever.
I have images of clear, blue skies on my mind about it. An obstacle has been removed. A huge boulder that had been sitting on the road for longer than I can remember. The path is cleared, it's going to happen, the Pixies are back!
Kim should focus on the Breeders. She's great at it. Mountain Battles is very good. Not quite brilliant like previous stuff, but neither is The Golem, Abbabubba or even Non Stop Erotik.
She is a very accomplished musician, and I think that BF is an ass for not giving her the creative freedom he gives to the other guys. If he did, the Pixies would sound even more like a true band, a combination of talents, something with a life of its own, not The Least Favorite in Charles Thompson's List of Monikers Plus Joey Santiago's Riffs (and underrated David). I think the usual description of Kim as token cute gal with sweet voice is very shortsighted. She fucking rawks with the Breeders.
On the other hand, I've long suspected she has issues. She uses drugs, she oversleeps, she chain smokes, she is attached at the hip to her twin sister which is sweet but kind of creepy, and I can't understand half of what she says on interviews... (and I can relate to some of that personally) Maybe she is a real piece of work. Who knows? Maybe BF has solid reasons to hate her. To me, he seems to be the very serious no-nonsense business type who doesn't have the patience to deal with an eccentric.
In any case, he hates her. That partnership will never work. Put it out of its misery and move on. It's the right thing to do. Always been.
Will she be missed? Not by me. I'm happy as long as the Breeders are active, even if records are few and far between.
In the Pixies, she was indeed nothing more than token cute gal with sweet voice, though only because Herr Francis wouldn't let her be anything else. She was even that much because there was nothing that BF could do about it. If he could make her become ugly with the voice of a fairy tale witch, he would. No wonder he picked a screamer to be the new bassist. Very telling. You fools, did you really think he would enlist another sexy and charming pixie with sweet voice to steal his spotlight AGAIN??? Aren't you paying attention?
My point is, Kim Deal is dispensable. The Pixies would be better with her, but not the way Charles was having it. The way it was working, it was a waste and she won't be missed. In fact, I think Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde are better than the other albums. Probably just because they were the latest and Francis/the band was more mature, certainly not because Kim's voice is absent.
And I love Bag Boy. Sure, it sounds a bit like The Seuss, but I also love Svn Fngrs. I hope it's the track that opens the new album. Opening it with an already known song would be a great way to ease us into the surprises we will find along the way.

How do you know how much Charles looks here? He only posts occasionally, but for all anyone of us know he could be on here reading stuff every day. I'd guess your estimation is probably right though, but no-one knows this for sure. He travels around a lot so probably uses different ISP addresses, so unless he logs in not even the admin can know. |

I know Kelley has a Twitter account that she posts to once a week or so, but it's mostly really inane shit that you'd expect from a 16 year old girl.

Everyone stop Kim bashing! It is what it is. They are/were what they were/are, whatever that means.
Anyone know if Kim reads this forum? She seems like one of these people who like to live outside of the virtual world of the interwebs. I remember her saying between songs at the Glasgow 'smoked all the pot...' and always wondered if maybe she'd been reading my comments and that's why she said it, I guess not as it's something she might well say anyway. I also tweeted to Dave while I was drunk and invited him to join me for a smoke before the show when I was drunk, he probably had a good laugh at that one if he read it.
I'm sure Frank was fucking with me a bit at the start of the 2007 Nijmegen gig. I was quite near the front there, and because it was anarchist town Nijmegen the general dress code for everyone in there that night apart from me was BLACK + noone else was wearing a Pixies t-shirt asides me that I saw. So there's me standing there with my blue jeans, beige Pixies t-shirt, checked shirt and shaved head, he made some comment about 'none of this Pixies music...' or something like that just before the band came on and launched into a rendition of The Black Rider and then looked right at me for an extensive period. It was one of those occasions we are all familiar with when you are near the front at some show and the guy on stage starts staring at you, possibly not even realising they are doing it, and you don't know where you look. He must have looked at me and thought, look at that guy there trying to look like me, he's like a thin version of me, why doesn't he get his own look, let's try and wind him up a bit, not realising of course that it was purely coincidental. My mother used to buy me checked shirts every Xmas from the Edinburgh Woollen mill. |

I hope Kim gets her act together and does another Breeders album with the classic line up. Is it just me or does the latest online Pixies activity show them really enjoying themselves and each other? This can only mean good things and I can't wait for the tour to make its way to Australia. |

Yup, without the Pixies, Albini would have been a very minor footnote in alt-rock history. He owes a lot to Thompson, and he despises Thompson for it.
Yup, Kim had a beautiful voice when she was young. Age and decades of drugs/alcohol/cigarettes have put an end to it. I also thought she was rather attractive in a an unconventional sort of way. Now she looks, sounds, and acts like a bitter old woman. |

I can only speculate as to why he didn't do it like that. Is Thompson a big cunt who is incapable of confrontation? Did she have some dirt on him, and he was scared as to what her reaction might be?

Frank Black's Yellow and Orange album and TOTY done as Pixies albums would have made them mega stars. Svn Fingers and Bluefinger material was very Pixies and would have worked well as strong Pixies albums. Now they are cult albums and will never get the huge audience they deserve because of one person. |

The other 3 put up with Kim Deal's antics for too long and it almost cost them their careers. She had a time and place in Pixies history but overstayed her welcome and is better off as a full time Breeder. The world is 5 or 6 Pixies albums poorer because of this, and I look forward to the post-Kim Deal Pixies as any true fan should. |
