Billboard Bits: Joey Santiago, Willy Mason, The Living End

May 05, 2006, 3:45 PM ET

As the first wave of the Pixies' reunion tour finally winds down, guitarist Joey Santiago has aligned with commercial sound agency Elias Arts. While based out of New York, he will focus on composing music for television commercials. As previously reported, Santiago also recently scored the Canadian documentary "Radiant City," which is about planned housing.

The Pixies will begin a short European tour July 14 in Trencin, Slovakia, but Santiago recently told Billboard.com the band has no further plans for the time being. "I'd only be interested if it happens in an organic manner; if all our schedules are aligned and we're all feeling it," he said of a possible new Pixies studio album. "That's the only reason to do it."

This is from The Breeders'Jose Medeles Blog-6/10/2007
Topic: TIME FLYS...

Message: Recently i've been in the studio with Joey Santiago (pixies) handling the drums, percussion and noise on a soundtrack. Fun stuff. Hooked up Josh Klinghoffer and played some music at Daniel Lanois beautiful studio. Josh is definately one of my favorite musicians. Finished up an EP for 1939 ENSEMBLE, its a duo project with Jim Brown on upright bass, currently booking some shows around LA. My new solo drum record is finished, just waiting for Manny to find time to mix it. I'm really happy with it. Hopefully i'll have some tracks from it up soon. My other band has been working in the studio harder then ever. Thats it for now. All the best...

I also found these samples of Joey's work on the Showtime show "Weeds":

This is probably all old news for most of you but I didn't even realise he had worked on that show until now. Soundtrack is available with both songs.

Yeah, thanks jm. Good stuff, the first track particularly, I hear ya contender!

Thanks josephmichael. I love the sound. Very unique and cool. Just like Joey's music. I hope they release a soundtrack just of his instrumentals.

Interesting tunes. The first one is kind of neat cuz Joey cuts out the last 2 beats from the 16 neat bar. Very Frankish. Works well with his style of play.

Plus, there are plenty of well-timed rock-'n'-roll tunes on the
soundtrack, courtesy of The Pixies' Joey Santiago.

Humour, whether in the form of biting sarcasm, unintentionally funny
billboards or wacky real-estate agents, is an integral part of this film. With
such a strong sense of isolation and desperation permeating every scene, it
helps ease the tension--as does the punk-rock soundtrack, courtesy of The
Pixies' Joey Santiago.

I think thats giving Harcourt a LOT of credit... but pretty spot on for Joey and the Pixies.

So you think the worlds of rock ‘n’ roll
rebels and TV advertising don’t mix?
EliasArts, international TV advertising
soundtrack giants, beg to differ. Santa
Monica’s EliasArts has recently snared
such independent music icons as Joey
Santiago of the Pixies, and DJ Nic Harcourt
of Santa Monica’s KCRW to sign on as
music and licensing directors. The Pixies
have been credited by some with being
inventors of alternative music as we know
it. Likewise, Nic Harcourt is known to have
shaped the face of independent music
tastes internationally.

Very cool!!!! I'd like to know which ones he's writing for. Or maybe it's just more fun to try to guess. Thx Carl.

It's an advertising agency, and Joey's job is to write music for commercials!

Joey composed the soundtrack to Radiant City, which is showing at this year's Vancouver International Film Festival:

It's kind of funny reading these press releases and news features... I remember back at the Hammerstein shows in NYC in Dec 04, a lot of the people I was sitting with were from Elias Arts, and even back then they were talking bout 'developing his talents'...
Daisy Girl Posted - 05/14/2006 : 20:04:39
cool thanks for the info bf. that's really cool.

thanks for the chuckle Carl. i guess you can say is we all score when Joey does a score.

That's true, but to get Joey's song you have to buy the whole album, which isn't $10 but $12! I hate when itunes does stuff like this.

Not sure if he's scored anything yet, Daisy.
