Garbage, Bonnie Raitt and others sign on for Wally 'Llama'
Ingram benefit concert

By Jonathan Cohen Jan 10, 2007, 0:56 GMT

Garbage, Bonnie Raitt,
the Martinis (Joey
Santiago and David
Lovering of the Pixies),
Keb` Mo`, Victoria
Williams and Tom
Freund, Freedy Johnston
and the Section Quartet
have signed on for a
benefit concert for
veteran drummer Wally
'Llama' Ingram, who is
suffering from throat cancer.

The event will be held
Jan. 31 in Glendale, Calif., and was organized by Garbage`s Butch Vig, who
has known Ingram for more than 20 years. The pair cut their rock`n`roll
teeth in Madison, Wisc., and an album by Ingram`s band, Sometimes Y, was
the first Vig produced at his Smart Studios complex. Ingram has gone on to
play with Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman and Eric Burdon, among others.

"He just found out about this throat cancer about four months ago, and
he`s going through really hardcore chemo and radiation," Vig tells
Billboard.com. "Doctors have given him a pretty good prognosis, but he has
taken a beating from the treatment. He`s only in his early 40s. A lot of
people in this country don`t have adequate health care, so we`re trying to
raise some money to help cover his bills."

Vig expects the evening will begin "semi-acoustic" and "become more
electric by the end, with a lot of collaborating going on." Garbage, which has
been on hiatus for the past year, is planning to play "an unusual set;
something atypical, and two or three songs with a string quartet."

Despite the layoff, the group has been sharing song ideas via the Internet in
recent months and is hoping to record a few them in March. "We need to sit
down in a room and play them and get them complete," Vig says.

Vig has also written a couple of songs with frontwoman Shirley Manson for
her in-progress solo album, but adds, "she has worked with seven or eight
different people, just to see what the chemistry is like. It took awhile for her
to get up to speed. She hasn`t played me anything yet, but I`ve heard the
songs are great."

Doug Moe: Stars will shine at cancer benefit

By Doug Moe

WALLY INGRAM has often been in the right place at the right
time. Twenty-plus years ago, he had a band in Madison,
Sometimes Y, that was looking to record an album about the
same time a young producer with a new studio was looking for
someone to record. The producer was Butch Vig, the studio
was Smart and the rest is history. Now, everyone from
Nirvana to Garbage has recorded at Smart, but Ingram was
there first.

In the years since, Ingram has been in the right place at the
right time often enough to become a music industry legend, a
little under the general public's radar perhaps, but talented
enough to have played his extraordinary drums in the service
of Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Tracy
Chapman
, Timbuk 3 and Eric Burdon and the Animals,
among many others.

Thursday morning, Wally Ingram was in the right place again,
the right place for this time in his life. Ingram was in Cedars-
Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

"I'm getting an injection as we speak," Ingram was saying by
cellular phone. "And then I am going to get my very last
radiation treatment."

Since August, when he was diagnosed with head and neck
cancer, Ingram has been receiving a very aggressive series of
treatments that began with six weeks of chemotherapy,
followed by radiation, and is just now winding up. The
treatments are at times debilitating, but they're working. The
tumors, which had spread to his lymph glands below the jaw,
have "pretty much melted away," Ingram said.

His spirits have been further buoyed by the reaction to a
planned benefit concert, being organized by his old pal Vig,
that's scheduled for Jan. 31 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale,
Calif.

Like Ingram, Vig now lives in the Los Angeles area. He has
lined up a dazzling array of talent to benefit Ingram. Unlike
many musicians, Ingram has health insurance, but estimates
he'll miss eight months of work, with the cost of his care
approaching a half million dollars.

The lineup for the "Musicians Banding Together to Fight
Cancer" benefit includes Raitt, the Martinis with Joey
Santiago
& David Lovering of the Pixies, Freedy
Johnston
, Eric McFadden and many more. Perhaps most notably, the night will include a performance by Garbage
(Vig, Duke Erickson, Steve Marker and Shirley Manson), who have been on hiatus for more than a year amid
rumors of a break-up, rumors the band has consistently denied.

Vig told Billboard this week that Garbage is planning to play "an unusual set; something atypical, and two or three
songs with a string quartet." Vig added that the band has been e-mailing song ideas back and forth and may
record again in March. Meanwhile, he has written a couple of songs that Manson may include on her in-progress
solo album.

Ingram, 44, who is originally from Beloit and moved to Los Angeles after graduating from UW-Madison in 1984, is
grateful both for the outpouring of support from his musician friends as well as the response the benefit concert is
generating. The $250 "Gold" tickets, with preferred seating and a backstage reception with the artists, have
already sold out. There are other tickets and packages available, and more information can be found at Ingram's
Web site, wallyingram.com.

Ingram and his wife, Laurie, have a 15-month-old daughter, Lydia.

"She is my best medicine," Wally Ingram said. ...

GARBAGE SET TO TAKE THE STAGE

Beverley Lyons & Showbiz Liz

SCOTS singer Shirley Manson will be back with her band
Garbage soon after a 16-month hiatus.

The band will reform later this month to perform at a benefit
concert for veteran US rock drummer Wally "Llama" Ingram, who
is suffering from throat cancer.

The concert in California on January 31, will feature many acts,
including Bonnie Raitt.

Garbage drummer Butch Vig, who is organising the concert,
says he expects the evening will begin "semiacoustic" and
"become more electric by the end, with a lot of collaborating
going on."

Garbage have been on hiatus since wrapping up a world tour in
Australia in October 2005.

Butch said the group are planning to play "an unusual set.
Something atypical, and two or three songs with a string
quartet."

Meanwhile, the group have been working on song ideas via the
internet in recent months and are hoping to record a few of them
in March.

Butch said: "We need to sit down, play them and get them
complete."

Butch also revealed he has written songs with Shirley for her
debut solo album.

"She has worked with seven or eight different people to see what
the chemistry is like," Butch told Billboard.

Shirley is also said to be working with ex-Smashing Pumpkins
frontman Billy Corgan on the new album.

Well, I was walking the dog around the park the other day when who do I stumble upon face to a tree counting "...54...55...56...57..."? Only David Lovering playing "hide and seek", with the Martinis of all people. What are the chances?!! I grouped them together and said "smile" (as you can see, they were having none of that)

Hey, I took those pics! The Echo show was fantastic, btw.

I was at the Alex Theatre last night as well and the Martinis played 4 songs:
BBQ
Out Upon The Road
Big Three Wheeler
You Are The One

Then Joey and Dave returned to play Gouge Away with McFadden and O'Rourke.

Pixies men, Garbage, George
Clinton play benefit show

Stars come out in force to help out a friend

Garbage
, The Martinis (featuring Pixies guitarist
Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering), and
surprise guests Crowded House as well as funk
legend George Clinton played a sold-out benefit
show for drummer Wally Ingram in Los Angeles
last night (January 31).

Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne,
Victoria Williams and Keb' Mo' also joined in on
the fun, performing brief sets during the four-hour all-
star benefit at the Alex Theatre to raise money for
Ingram's medical bills.

Ingram, a renowned percussionist who has played
with most of the aforementioned artists, has been
battling throat cancer.

Despite his weakened condition, Ingram sat in on
percussion for several artists including Raitt,
Crowded House, and Crow, who dubbed him the
world's most "bad-ass drummer."

The evening was filled with highlights, including a
rousing set by Garbage led by a fiery-haired
Shirley Manson and backed by a string quartet.

Crowded House made their first live appearance in
more than 10 years in front of a stunned audience,
as previously reported.

Clinton, another surprise guest, joined Crow on
stage for a funked-up version of her song 'Every Day
Is A Winding Road'
.

And Raitt, who played guitar for Browne and Crow,
got a standing ovation for belting out her hit 'Thing
Called Love'
.

At the end of the show, the diverse factions came
together for a rendition of Bob Marley's 'No
Woman, No Cry'
- a spectacular grand finale,
despite a few sound problems.

After the show, Santiago told NME.COM that his
Pixies side project, The Martinis, played their first show in six years to help out their friend. "We did it all
for Wally," Santiago said. "It was so good to see Wally up there playing. And it was crazy to see
George Clinton!" he added.

Following nearly three hours of drumming, a sweat-drenched, beaming Ingram told NME.COM, "I feel like
a guy who went through hell, but now I'm in heaven."

I was totally surprised to hear about Crowded House playing since I hadn't even heard about them announcing they would play at Coachella before reading that article just now.

Thanks for the setlist! Guess it was 4 songs, the whole night was very long and is now a total blur. I recorded the whole thing too, sounds pretty good so far, will probably transfer it over early next week. Gouge sounded okay but the vocals weren't very loud and he wasn't screaming enough.

I'm working it. Sound quality is crappy and camera is too jerky (I was trying to hide the camera from the photo nazis walking up and down the aisle). I hope ijwthstd has a better version.
