Posted - 07/30/2004 : 09:21:16 hey that's awesome to have worked out the tab yourself. i've been playing myself for about the same, and couldn't do it for ages even when looking at a tab, lol. |

Posted - 07/29/2004 : 08:29:32 Yeah after making my post I checked and realised what I put is pretty much the same as the tab we have on this site. I also saw the F# bit, I didn't know that was what he was playing, I'm still sorta new to guitar (well I've been playing for a year an a half now but it doesn't seem like long) but my Hey is now much better, thanks.

Posted - 07/29/2004 : 06:54:42 MMD, tab looks good, the only difference between what i play and you play is the first muted upstroke i play as a 2 on the high E, and i use the one finger over the top three strings, like frank... i can't hammer with my pinky!
also, it doesn't look like you've included the bit where he changes to F#? he does it the second time, and every fourth from then. for this you really need to user you finger to cover them all, because you lift your second finger and hammer it onto 3rd on the string bellow, leaving your finger over the second fret on the two strings above.
hah, complicated? i can't be arsed to tab. and anyway, it's only pretty much what the tab says here: http://www.frankblack.net/tabs/pixies.asp?song=doo-hey |

Posted - 07/25/2004 : 09:10:42 How to play Hey, my way.
Ok if you're trying to play Hey try my way out, it's dead easy and it sounds right. You don't really have to move your hand much atall either.
First, keep your hand in the D chord shape (XX0232) and use your little finger for the hammers onto the 4th fret of the G string. To get the little click click simply lift up your hand so your fingers are still touching the strings but not pressing down on the frets and strum twice quickly.
Key: D = Downstrokes
U = Upstrokes
D UD D D U D U
E------XX---------2-----
B--3---XX---3-3-----3-3-
G--2h4------2-2h4---4-2-
D-----------------------
A-----------------------
E-----------------------
From watching the DVD and listening to the album I worked out this is basically right although I play it like this:
Finger diagram (1=first finger etc.)
(Fret) 1 2 3 4
E 2
A 3
D 1 (4)
G
B
E
Frank plays it more like this, with a mini barre on the 2nd fret with is first finger:
(Fret) 1 2 3 4 5
E 1 (?4)
A 2
D 1 (3)
G
B
E
And he does something with his 4th finger on the 5th fret of the high E string but I can't work it out.

Posted - 07/18/2004 : 08:25:21 Hey is very hard to play. The chorus is easy, but it's the verses that kill you. Vamos isn't hard to understand, but the way Frank plays it is very difficult. Sort of off beat.

Well the way I play is Bm: xx4232, F#: xx4322, Bm: xx4232, D: xx0232. Except at the end of the verse it's a plucked Dsus2 I think: xx0230. Though when Frank plays it he hits 5th fret on the B string and pulls off to hit D, same thing. Sounds right to me. Then the chorus Bm, Gmaj, Em. The solo is the best part, but that you figure out on your own, unless you can't then email me or I'll post or someone else will post it on here. That's how my band does it and it sounds right to us. Only thing is it sometimes looks like Frank is playing a Bm7 chord but I play a Bm because he uses it throughout the song. I hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Posted - 07/14/2004 : 19:02:31 Oh okay, so I've been over complicating things. Okay... okay. See I was doing all these jazz and regge chords. When all this time it power chords, bar chords and open chords. Damn, thank you Nate Dawg now I can annoy my band with that song. That's the only song off of Doolittle I didn't know, I know all the others.

Posted - 07/14/2004 : 17:46:34 Mr. Grieves is actually one of the easier songs.
One part that I've seen a lot of people screw up on is the D, A, part. The D is a powerchord x5777xx, and the A is a bar chord 577655. Pretty easy, just have to switch strings and formation. The only notes that aren't bar chords are the E and the G7. 012200 for the E and 320001 for the G7.

Posted - 07/14/2004 : 13:14:01 took me a while to figure franks little lead on the verses of dig for fire. sounds like he's just jammin on the one note but trying to nail it myself...took a while. it was only until i saw him play it did it sorta click. its the same with his jammin during 'i've been tired'. genius, simple but again only Frank can make it sound like that.
in general the way he strums his six string.....wow. never seen anything like it. you gotta dig his solo version of 'i'm amazed |

Hey pissed me off for a while, even with tabs. I cracked it about a month ago though, using this sites tab, which is excellent.
The funny thing is, once you've learnt a supposedly hard part, it becomes so natural and easy you're never quite able to understand why you thought it was so hard to start with.
Very true! I think it's mostly because of the rhythm and the muting. I've noticed frank isn't playing it quite like he used to in the original Pixies' days. Maybe he even had some trouble.

Posted - 07/14/2004 : 07:40:48 I can never figure out Hey either. I know it's just a bunch of hammer ons on the 3rd and 4th fret, but just can't get it to sound the same.
I actually learned how to play the guitar from a Doolittle songbook. I think the first song I learned was Here Comes Your Man. Pretty easy chords but that Bm screwed me up for awhile. I spent the summer of '92 (is that a Bryan Adams song) with my guitar around my neck and the Doolittle book in front of me. |

Posted - 07/14/2004 : 06:24:41 There is a part in Rock Music, where Frank kind of, kicks up the chords a semi-tone and back down again really quickly, I find that very hard, at least getting it to sound right anyway.
I can't think of a song that is particularly hard. I had to find another way to play Frank's part to 'hey' because of the way I play guitar. Frank plays it on D at the bottom of the neck, but I play it up near the barre chord location. Something like that....
